New Blog Post!
Sorry, it's a bit of a long one, but this is what it's all be aiming towards... how does the room actually sound? Find out here:
The Perfect Studio The purpose of this (and many) studio builds is to create a great listening space, a place where one can mix and/or master audio with complete clarity and translation to the 'outside world'. To achieve this, we firstly need to know what constitutes a great listening space, an answ...

Found myself with a bit of free time during self-isolation, so decided to do some speaker calibration and room measurements. While here I thought I’d take the opportunity to compare a couple of room correction softwares… keep your eyes pealed for the eventual blog.
Hit me up if you want your music mixed or mastered in a room with great acoustics!

Back on the Studio Build Diary... very close to finishing now! Have a read over on my website:
The Final Finishes... Hiding, Hiding, Hiding! At this point, the studio as a working room had, by all intents and purposes, been built. But there were still a few of those final steps to make the finish look plush. First of all, the ventilation and access points needed to be hidden/cupboarded away.....

NEW BLOG POST: How I built my guitar pedalboard. Have a read below.
The Design Clearly, I had reached the point where I just wanted to fill my still-to-be-finished studio with more furniture! Shortly after building my sidecar, I decided I also needed a new guitar pedalboard. My current pedalboard was designed for lugging about gigging, it was a sturdy case but was f...

Had a good weekend tracking vocals. Look how fast I was working!

BLOG POST: A touch off topic this week... I turned my hand to what could loosely be called 'carpentry'. How I made my studio sidecar - for rack gear and storage. Have a read, there's a video and everything.
Studio Sidecar Design Remember a few blog posts back, when talking about audio connections, I hinted at the concept of always preparing for expansion? Well, that's exactly what I didn't do with my studio desk! I started to realise I was running out of rack space (why is new gear always so tempting?)...

Had a productive weekend producing a track for a new artist. Butters came down to lend her ultrasonic ears.

NEW BLOG POST: Some cosmetic improvements... but it doesn't just look nice, there are acoustic reasons for the choice in fabric.
Now we can begin to make the studio look nice...ish! As I was using the original brick walls as the boundaries of the studio, I wouldn't be finishing off my treatment with plasterboard. Firstly, this would undo some of the acoustic treatment, and it would, in part, make my room acoustically smaller,...

Blog Time! And boy do you not wanna miss this one! All about the exciting world or... audio cables :/
But seriously, have a read!
One part of the pre-planning stage for the studio build involved thinking about convenient connectivity. Ideally I wanted all connections to be within easy reach, near the appropriate equipment, while also being out of the way. The last thing I wanted was unsightly cables and looms running across th...

Sneaky new addition before I need to build a bigger board... the Meatboy Fuzz from featuring Seymour’s classic steamed hams. Sounds so full!

It’s that time again... latest studio blog is live. This time talking about the what, why, and how of acoustic diffusers, and how I built mine. Have a read!
Why Diffusion? The decision to build a diffuser into the studio came about from an aesthetic appeal, and a curiosity in their acoustic characteristics, having never really worked in a studio with diffusion before. After doing some research, I found that some of the benefits of diffusion suited my ro...

STUDIO BUILD BLOG: Latest post up now. Finishing the wood panelling for the front wall.
It was time to finally finish the front wall. This consisted of cutting, sanding, oiling, and attaching around 60 pine strips to the existing MDF board. The reason for this slatted wood design was two-fold; firstly - at a depth of 17mm they would add extra weight to the front wall, secondly - the sl...

STUDIO BUILD UPDATE: Getting the studio furniture in. It was good to actually start using the place!
The studio build was making progress, and I wanted to get some of the bigger furniture in before the door went on, or angles got too tight to pivot around. At this time, I also had some projects coming up that I needed to work on, so it was a better time than any to get my equipment in situ. The fir...

NEW BLOG POST: Why I built my speakers into the wall.
A little bit of a longer one this week, going into the benefits of flush mounting speakers as well as the building process.
Check it out here: https://www.frankleonardwalker.com/post/15-flush-ah-ahhh-savior-of-the-sbir
This week we're turning our attention back to the front wall design, the how, and why, I mounted speakers flush into the wall. Why? What are the benefits of doing this, and do they outweigh the negatives? First, the positives: Mounting speakers into a wall removes potential SBIR issues. SBIR stands....

New Blog Post: How I got around the problem of low-ceilings in my studio build...
https://www.frankleonardwalker.com/post/14-eyes-to-the-skies-ceiling-solutions
The ceiling was always a point of contention, the already low ceiling height would be introducing some nasty room modes, but the room height couldn't be reduced by much more without becoming uncomfortable! There was also the matter of sound-proofing from the room above, which would take up even more...

This week's blog post is on starting the front wall build that will house my speakers. Read all about it here... https://www.frankleonardwalker.com/post/12-speakerbo###-front-wall-design
With the fundamental bass trapping in place, I could now turn my attention to the front wall construction. In my design, I opted for flush mounting my speakers into the front wall due to several factors. One was the chimney breast taking up some of the front wall space, leaving empty cavities in the...
