Christmas is a time for joy, family, and celebration BUT it can also be one of the hardest times of the year for many. 🎄

Grief doesn’t take a holiday.

The empty seat at the table, a song that sparks memories, or the family traditions can make it all feel too overwhelming.

If you're finding this Christmas difficult, know you're not alone 🕊️

FIRST CHRISTMAS IN HEAVEN

It’s my first Christmas in heaven,
I’ve been dreading it all through the year.
Knowing that you will be lonely,
lost to the joy and the cheer.

I’ve been sending sweet robins to find you,
and feathers have brought you my love.
I’ve been whispering secrets to raindrops,
hoping you’ll hear me above.

It’s my first Christmas in heaven,
it’s a wonderful place to exist…
And the only sadness that finds me,
is wishing I wasn’t so missed.

Because if you look closely, you’ll see me,
in every small thing that you do.
I’m the joy that sneaks in through the window,
when you stop to admire the view.

I’m the laughter that gasps from your sadness
when your soul frees itself from this pain.
I’m the comfort that warms through your blanket
as you wrap yourself up from the rain.

It’s my first Christmas in heaven,
and they told me that this would be tough.
All I can do, is remind you, you’re loved
and I’ll pray, every day, it’s enough.

Donna Ashworth

(I wrote this by request and I hope it brings comfort to anyone who needs it tonight).

This afternoon we will be popping down to a dedicated Death Café hosted by Gateshead Libraries between 2pm & 3pm.

We hope to see you there 🙂

Today marks the start of National Grief Awareness Week 🤍

On Thursday, Gateshead Libraries will be hosting a dedicated Death Café from 2pm to 3pm in Birtley Library to offer a welcoming space for people to come together to talk about all aspects of dying.

Often death can feel like a taboo subject, and it never seems to be the right time to have those discussions around what you might want to wear at your funeral, if you even want a funeral, and coping with the passing of a loved one. The café isn’t a replacement for counselling, but talking about death with others can help process some of the feelings it brings up.

We know that the festive period can be challenging for many, and we’d encourage anyone who feels they would benefit from a session like this to come along.

⭐️ Coping with a Year of Firsts ⭐️

Many people find the first year after a loved one dies the most difficult to cope with and it can feel overwhelming. Each milestone can bring a fresh wave of grief and pain, with the firsts, come the memories of the last! 💜

Consider which firsts will be the most difficult and plan ahead for them, whether it's spending time with family, visiting their resting place, lighting a candle or hosting a get-together with loved ones.

Take the time to talk to someone through your grief, this can be beneficial with coming to terms with your loss. Whether this be family and friends, or calling a national bereavement helpline.

We are always here to talk to, we understand your grief and will continue to support you throughout this journey. 💜

We have created a directory of all the places available daily to our residents across the public, private, health and voluntary sectors so that anyone who is cold knows where they can go to get warm, stay warm and enjoy a little company and some hot refreshments. Anyone is welcome at a Warm Space, everyone who comes along is treated equally, with dignity and respect. www.gateshead.gov.uk/WarmSpaces

Advice for staying warm and well:
💜 Keep your body warm by wearing several layers rather than one thick layer.
💜 Use a hot water bottle or electric blanket, but make sure the items you're using are in good working order and you're using them safely.
💜 Drink 6-8 mugs of liquid each day, especially warm drinks. At least one hot meal a day can also help you stay warm.
💜 It's also important to get up and move around as much as you can.
💜 Heat the room you're using to at least 18°C.
