Pound to Park During Blackpool’s Extended Christmas Season

Blackpool is to introduce discounted parking over several weeks in the run-up to Christmas to encourage people to enjoy a spectacular line-up of festive entertainment.

Blackpool Council is offering residents and visitors the opportunity to park for three hours for just a pound on most of its car parks*.

The offer runs from November 18 to January 2 to coincide with the return of the spectacular Christmas By The Sea event which last year attracted record crowds to the Promenade.

Situated on the Tower Festival Headland opposite The Blackpool Tower, the Christmas village will once again include a free-to-use skating rink, festive light installations and projection shows, themed log cabins, artificial snowfalls, Christmas trees and Christmas tram rides.

It will also include themed children’s attractions and the return of the Star Flyer which, at 260ft tall, is one of Europe’s tallest swing rides.

Blackpool’s Tourism Business Improvement District (TBID), which represents scores of tourism operators, has joined forces with sponsors TalkTalk to ensure the event can go ahead during Blackpool’s extended Illuminations season.

Cllr Mark Smith, Blackpool Council’s Cabinet Member for Business, Enterprise & Job Creation, said: “We are delighted to be able to support the Christmas By The Sea village and wider town centre retail offer by reintroducing the highly-popular £1 parking offer for an extended period in the run-up to Christmas.

“Last year, Blackpool’s unique Christmas offer brought visitors from far and wide and gave our businesses a welcome post-pandemic boost after one of the most difficult trading periods imaginable.

“There is already a fantastic programme of Christmas entertainment lined up from November 18 through to January 2 and we hope this parking offer will further encourage residents to shop in their own town centre this Christmas as well as providing a huge incentive for visitors coming from out-of-town to enjoy free family entertainment.”

*The parking offer can only be redeemed using the PayByPhone system. All you need to do is download the PayByPhone app and register, or call 0800 546 0609.

Three-hour sessions are limited to one per day after which normal tariffs apply. Filey Place and Talbot Multi-Storey car parks are not included in the offer.

The bubbliest event in the North West returns

Blackpool Bubble Rush is set to make a colourful return next month, seeing hundreds of people running, walking and even dancing through coloured foam for charity.

The only Bubble Rush in the North West will take over Lawson’s Showground on Sunday, August 7th.

Organised by Brian House Children’s Hospice, Blackpool Bubble Rush last took place in 2019, when 2,000 bubble rushers raised an incredible £50,000 for the charity.

The next event was set for April 2020 but was cancelled with weeks to go as the pandemic took hold of the country. Despite hopes for a return in 2021, the pandemic forced another cancellation of the family-fun event.

But the event is back for 2022, and with heaps of foam at the ready, the Fundraising Team at Brian House is primed for its long-awaited return.

Head of Fundraising, Linzi Warburton, said: “We were so sad to have to cancel not one, but two dates for our bubbliest event.

“Bubble Rush is a family favourite among our fundraising events, and love seeing people cross the finish line covered in foam with a huge smile of their faces. It really is so much fun for all the ages.

“But more importantly, everyone taking part and raising sponsorship is helping us to provide outstanding care and support to life-limited children and their families across the Fylde coast. Taking part means that we can continue to be there for our area’s most fragile children.”

Entry is ÂŁ15 per adult (ÂŁ10.50 for children) via www.blackpoolbubblerush.co.uk

JOHNNY VEGAS TO SWITCH ON BLACKPOOL ILLUMINATIONS

Legendary actor and comedian Johnny Vegas is to switch on this year’s Blackpool Illuminations.

Johnny, who has already provided the “voice” of a seagull that fronts the resort’s biggest ever marketing campaign, will pull the famous switch at the end of a live concert in The Tower Ballroom on Friday 2 September to trigger four months of Illuminations.

The concert, which is being produced in association with MTV, will feature performances from Blue, one of the UK’s most successful bands over the past two decades, singer-songwriter Tom Grennan and Mae Muller, one of music’s most exciting new talents.

This year’s Switch-On concert will be played out to a live audience made up of more than 2,000 winners of a free-to-enter ballot. Although the ballot has now closed, there will be a limited number of golden circle tickets going on sale later this month.

The concert and Switch-On moment will also be live streamed to a global audience across MTV and VisitBlackpool channels, and event organisers are exploring the possibility of streaming the event to an outdoor audience on the Tower Festival Headland.

Switch-on star Johnny Vegas follows in the footsteps of a host of national and international celebrities who have pulled the switch down the years including the likes of Peter Kay, Tim Burton, Alfie Boe, Diversity, Star Trek, Jayne Mansfield and Robbie Williams.

Last year’s Switch-On celebration saw Shirley Ballas, head judge of BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing, pull the switch, watched by a worldwide audience with more than 160,000 views from as far afield as Australia, Canada and the United States.

Johnny is one of Britain’s best-known comic talents. He has performed in numerous TV shows including Benidorm, Shooting Stars, Sunday Brunch, Still Open All Hours, and 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown. He also featured in the award-winning film, Eaten By Lions, which was set in Blackpool.

In 2021, Johnny visited Lightworks, the home of the Blackpool Illuminations, with the Salvage Hunters team and, as part of the programme, did a mock “switch on” of the Illuminations.
Two months ago, he was revealed as the voice of the Only In Blackpool TV ad campaign, spearheaded by ‘spokesbird’ Nigel C Gull, a puppet created by award-winning puppeteer Andy Heath.

The £1.3 million partnership between Merlin Entertainments, VisitBlackpool, Blackpool Tourism Business Improvement District and other partners features Nigel bringing to life the iconic seaside resort’s distinctive charm and character and reaffirming its status as the UK’s capital of family fun.

Johnny said: "As a northerner through and through, it is a real honour to be asked to switch on the iconic Illuminations. I have a great affection for Blackpool and am really looking forward to the big night in the Tower Ballroom."

Cllr Lynn Williams, Leader of Blackpool Council, said today: “We are absolutely thrilled to announce Johnny Vegas as this year’s Switch-On star.

“Down the years, he has been a true ambassador for Blackpool and his love of the Illuminations is obvious. Anyone who has seen the episode of Salvage Hunters in which he was quite literally moved to tears by being given an opportunity to do a mock switch-on in front of The Blackpool Tower will know that.

“This year, we are delighted to invite him back to do the real thing in front of a worldwide audience.”

Full details of the Switch-On event with updates on timings and tickets, can be found at visitblackpool.com/switchon.

Winners of the free ballot tickets will be notified over the coming weeks.

Brian House celebrates Children’s Hospice Week 2022

This week Brian House Children’s Hospice has been celebrating all it does to help poorly children while creating special memories for those in its care.

The Bispham-based hospice is joining hospices around the country in marking Children’s Hospice Week - a campaign led by the national charity Together for Short Lives.

The theme for this year’s campaign is ‘For the Children’. It has provided an opportunity for Brian House to celebrate everything it does as a hospice to help children and families across the Fylde coast have the best life possible; from providing vital support and respite making unforgettable memories.

Throughout the week, the team has made the most of the beautiful weather and visited lots of local attractions with the children. They’ve been to Lytham’s Park View, Walling’s Ice Cream and of course, the beach!

Janet Miller, Senior Staff Nurse, said: “We’re so lucky to have all these fantastic places on our doorstep. The kids absolutely love getting out and about.”

Children’s Hospice Week has also been a chance for the only children’s hospice on the Fylde coast to say thank you to all its supporters for continuing to support the charity.

As for many children's hospices across the UK, Brian House has faced the most challenging few years in its history as a result of the pandemic. But now, with restrictions relaxed and continued backing from the community, the hospice is looking forward to a brighter future.

Lisa Barlow, Assistant Clinical Director at Brian House said: “We’re so pleased that, after what has been an extremely challenging time for children and their families, and also for the hospice as we have evolved to care in very different ways, we are finally back to supporting local children with life-limiting or life-threatening illness and their families.

“The pandemic gave us the opportunity to step back and look at the support we offer to the families who need us, and how we can evolve to further support children with palliative care needs across Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre.

“Children’s Hospice Week has been the perfect opportunity for us to celebrate what we do best – providing outstanding hospice care to local children whilst ensuring we offer our support to families allowing their child to live their life to the full, however short that may be.”

Brian House is continuing to develop its way of working and building links with local and regional services so that it can be there for even more families, in even more ways. Already in the last year, the hospice has introduced a series of support groups to help the whole family, including ‘siblings’ and ‘baby and toddler’ groups, which have proved to be extremely beneficial. The hospice also plans to have ‘parents’ and ‘grandparents’ groups up and running by the end of the year.

Brian House is a charity, which relies on support from local people who take part in organised events, including Bubble Rush, Night Run and Santa Dash, make a regular donation or holding their own event. Find out more at www.brianhouse.org.uk.

Blackpool Colour Run returns this weekend

Hundreds of people are set to ‘paint the beach’ at the weekend, as Trinity Hospice holds its popular Blackpool Colour Run at Starr Gate. Blackpool Colour Run sees fundraisers running 3km along the beach, through seven stations where volunteers are primed to throw clouds of coloured, powered paint so that, by the end, they will be all the colours of the rainbow. The family fun event takes place on Saturday, and places are still available.Trinity’s Head of Fundraising, Linzi Warburton, said: “Blackpool Colour Run really is fun for all the family, and we can’t wait to see our incredible supporters having a great time and getting colourful to support our charity.“Every single person who takes part on Saturday will be helping us to provide outstanding, expert hospice care here on the Fylde coast, and they’ll be having the best time while doing it.“People can still sign up through our website, or just show up on the day! We’re really looking forward to seeing them there.”Last year’s Blackpool Colour Run signalled the return of events for Trinity Hospice following Covid restrictions and saw more than 900 people taking part, raising £25,000.Online entries close on Tuesday, but people are able to sign up on the day from 10am.
