🚧 Sections of Holdenhurst Road in Bournemouth will be closed to traffic in both directions next week when repair works to the road and footpaths start on Monday 24 June.

Parts of the road between Buchanan Avenue and Capstone Place will be resurfaced using a series of phased road closures for just over two weeks. Meanwhile, work will also take place on the Springbourne and Ashley Road signalised junctions, as well as the side roads and areas in between where the road has deteriorated.

The road will be closed in both directions while the work takes place with diversion routes in place.

Students in Poole and Christchurch have created artworks for their school ground drains to raise awareness about ocean pollution. Year 5 pupils from Heatherlands Primary in Poole and Mudeford Junior in Christchurch collaborated with Sarah Wise from DEED and artist Miroslav Lucan from Lucan Art. The project aimed to highlight the impact of litter and waste on the environment.

Students participated in workshops to design drain art that would remind their peers of the consequences of littering. The winning designs, "Save Our Seas" by Amelia and Christina at Heatherlands, and "Only Rain Down the Drain" by Noah at Mudeford, were chosen for their strong messages and visual appeal. Miroslav Lucan then brought these designs to life.

Sarah Wise emphasised the project's focus on raising awareness about how street litter can end up in the ocean, contributing to pollution. She highlighted that small actions like this project can help create a positive future. Sarah McKinley, senior leader at Mudeford Junior, noted that the project educated and inspired students to protect the seas. Bea Collis, assistant headteacher at Heatherlands, praised the workshop's impact on the children.

The project was funded by the Wessex Water Foundation Environment Fund through the Dorset Community Foundation. More information is available at www.deed.org.uk.

Former RAF serviceman John Hunt, 96, fulfilled his lifelong dream of flying a dual-controlled plane after 76 years. In 1946, at 18, John joined the RAF, hoping to fly. Instead, he was assigned to ground crew duties in Wiltshire, maintaining aircraft airframes. Despite a memorable ride in a Lancaster bomber's turret in 1948, his desire to pilot a plane remained unfulfilled.

John's dream finally came true thanks to Colten Care's Avon Reach in Mudeford and Bliss Aviation at Bournemouth Airport. Accompanied by companionship team leader Denise Marks, John met instructor Gary Ashworth, who explained the flight controls and pre-flight checks. John then boarded a blue and white Piper Warrior, donning headphones and familiarising himself with the aircraft's instruments.

During the 30-minute flight, they flew over Bournemouth, Sandbanks, and Mudeford Quay, including a special pass over Avon Reach, where staff and residents waved from below. After landing, John received a certificate of achievement. He expressed immense joy, saying it exceeded his expectations and was an unforgettable experience. Gary praised John’s enthusiasm and remarked on his genuine delight throughout the flight.

πŸͺ¦ Two medieval grave slabs that were lost at sea nearly 800 years ago have been recovered by Maritime archaeologists from Bournemouth University.

The slabs, carved from Purbeck marble, were cargo on a ship that sank off the Dorset coast during the 1200s and have laid at the bottom of Studland Bay ever since. The site of the shipwreck has been dubbed the β€˜Mortar Wreck’, on account of the large number of grinding mortars also found among the cargo.

Mudeford care home resident John Hunt fulfilled his dream of flying a dual controlled plane, an ambition he’d held for 76 years πŸŽ‰

πŸ›©οΈ A former RAF serviceman has fulfilled a dream that he had harboured for 76 years.

When John Hunt (96) was called up to serve in the Royal Air Force as an 18-year-old in 1946, he was hoping to fly at some point.

But, posted to Wiltshire on ground crew duties, the opportunity never came his way as he focused on servicing the mechanical structure of planes, the airframe, so that others could take to the air.
