Dear Readers!

The British summer never fails to disappoint. My family and I hired a beach hut on Knoll Beach for a week in July – something we’ve done for the past few years – and hoped for seven days of glorious sunshine. In the end, it was wet and rainy on several days, but we made the best of it.

Knoll Beach in Studland is perhaps my favourite stretch of coastline in Dorset. It is smaller, quieter and more peaceful than Bournemouth’s beaches. I love the view across the water, with Old Harry Rocks on one side and the Isle of Wight in the distance. The drive through Purbeck is stunning, and we often stop at the viewpoint on the B3351 to look across to Poole and Brownsea Island. It’s an excellent spot for an ice cream.

The nature at Knoll Beach is also incredible. The sand dunes, now beaten down by storms, are fascinating, and the area attracts plenty of wildlife – we saw several deer and rabbits this year. My children loved digging in the sand and looking for shells, while I practised on our paddle board when the water was calm. The weather may not have been spectacular, but it was a wonderful week. If you’ve never been, I highly recommend visiting.

Speaking of disappointment, I hope sport fans are not too sad about England losing the Euros. At least the Premier League is coming back soon – we have a four-page spread in this issue all about AFC Bournemouth’s upcoming fixtures. With the footie about to start, let’s hope for sunnier weather ahead.

Dear Readers!

Dorset View (and Viewpoint Magazine) has a new editor.

My name is Luke and it’s a pleasure to meet you. I’ve been a journalist since 2015, working for several publications, and am now proud to be writing for and serving the Dorset community.

I must admit, I am not a Dorset native, but my wife is. I’ve been visiting the county regularly since 2010, and we moved here permanently in 2020. I want to thank Janine Pulford and her family for giving me this opportunity, and I hope to do them proud. And please don’t fret, readers, as Janine will still be closely involved with the magazine. She has asked to share these words with you all:

“I said my last editorial was coming shortly and this is it.

As I say farewell, I would like to thank you all for your support over
the last 21 years (26 if you count every Viewpoint year) and you may well have known me the whole time.

I shall miss you without doubt, but retirement, fiction writing and the British summer beckon.

Our new editor, Luke, has plenty of experience and has made this changeover seamless. In Luke’s hands, Dorset View can only get better. Have a great future together,” Janine

Please do reach out with your news, letters and any thoughts or requests you have for the magazine. It has been a privilege building this first issue for you all.

The British Pedal Car Grand Prix 2024

It’s ready steady pedal in Ringwood as the British Pedal Car Grand Prix will be returning for its 37th exhilarating event on Sunday 7 July.

A test of speed, strategy and stamina

Ringwood will see racers zooming through the heart of the town centre as the streets will be transformed into a challenging circuit. The course is designed to test each team’s engineering skills and pedalling prowess with tight turns and speedy straights that will keep the adrenaline pumping.

This exciting competition is two hours long and was originally inspired by the pedal car races held in Ringwood’s twin town of Pont-Audemer in Normandy. Most teams build their own car with more competitive participants aiming to maximise speed while, for others, entertaining the crowd is the real win.

Dear Readers!

Did you see the spectacular Northern Lights?

I sat up waiting and wondering and looking out of the window at the crescent moon, but by ten thirty tiredness overcame me.

When I woke the next day and saw social media flooded with awe-inspiring photographs it was incredible yet so disappointing because I was probably brushing my teeth when the phenomenon started.

Reprimanding myself for not having the staying power, I admired my friends’ dazzling displays that popped up one after another in my newsfeed and read what an amazing spectacle I’d missed. It seemed like everyone but me had seen it.

Determined not to miss the Aurora Borealis the following night, Nick and I went out like intrepid explorers. Firstly, we couldn’t get anywhere near Knowlton Church, our preferred site, so had to resort to parking at Holt Heath, where the roadside was also crammed with vehicles. The disappointment of no light show by midnight was huge and we went home.

Well let’s hope my next plan does not go awry. The July editorial is scheduled to be written by our newly appointed editor. It’s bound to be a masterpiece, so I’m not going to give any spoilers.

All I can add is that the last 26 years editing magazines has been a joy and I will miss these chats immensely – but – bedtime at ten thirty on the most exciting night of the year in Dorset confirms I’m well overdue for retirement.

This magazine is packed with news and events as always and the chance to win a family dual day ticket to the Gillingham & ShaftesburyShow. Enjoy.

Controversial West Moors planning application turned down

By Marilyn Barber | [email protected]

A planning application for a 60- bed care home and new church/ community hall for Plymouth Brethren in West Moors was turned down on 17 April following a site visit. When the application came before Dorset Council’s planning committee meeting at the Allendale Centre on 13 March it was clear that there was significant opposition to the proposal by West Moors residents.

Thirty people filled the public gallery with around 60 others banging on the glass outside, holding up signs saying ‘no’ to the application on land off Blackfield Lane.

29/04/2024

Hello Readers!

I have decided to kick up a stink.

When was the last time you trod in dog muck?

For me, it was a few months ago and the real insult was when I tried to wash the offending matter off the sole of my trainer with a hose pipe and it sprayed all over my face. This took me back to my childhood when poor Mum had to constantly wipe dog muck off our shoes with newspaper. She never used a hose pipe and I can understand why. With four kids, hardly a week went by without one of us slipping in poo.

Luckily the pavements have got cleaner since those days and responsible dog owners generally pick up after their pets. Being
a former dog owner, I know it isn’t always straightforward to p**p scoop and sometimes the odd poo goes ‘missing’ especially if your pet has run into the distance to do his business. But the poo I trod in was right in the middle of the path, where I did not expect to see it. My powers of observance have improved dramatically since then.

Another pet hate of mine is when responsible dog owners pick up their pet’s poo, tie it neatly in a bag then hang it on a tree! Can someone who does this, please explain the reasoning behind this unusual practice.

Moving on, this magazine is full of news and articles including the Muddy Dog Dash, which looked great fun because of the muck! A hose pipe would have been handy.

Inside this issue are two brilliant competitions. One worth nearly £1,000 and one worth £100. Do enter both, you never know, you might win.

Protesters storm planning committee meeting

By Marilyn Barber

Such is the level of opposition to an outline planning application for a 60-bed care home and a new church/ community hall for Plymouth Brethren in West Moors, that around 30 local people not only filled the public gallery at the Dorset Council planning committee meeting in the Quarter Jack Hall at Wimborne’s Allendale Centre on Wednesday 13 March, they also protested outside vociferously.

Around 60 people banged on the glass and held up signs saying ‘no’ to the application on land off Blackfield Lane.

The debate over the area, which was formerly Blackfield Farm strawberry farm has been going on for some years and in 1989 permission was granted for housing at Blackfield Lane.

An outline application for a care home, church hall and industrial unit on the site was refused in June 2021 on the grounds of highways safety and the impact on onsite ecology.

📢 JOB VACANCY 👇

VACANCY: Editor required

After 20 years, Pulford Publicity’s editor is retiring

The editor is important to the smooth running of the company and if you have the skills and enthusiasm, now is your chance to apply. You must be a passionate writer with journalistic qualifications (NCTJ minimum) who loves a challenge.

Every day is different and being community spirited and providing accurate and balanced reporting is vital. As is the ability to thrive off deadlines. There are five in-house community magazines to edit. You should be intuitive, accurate, reliable and caring. The job includes occasional out of hours work to cover vital stories, events, live performances, meetings and meal reviews.

Janine Pulford said: “The position will suit a qualified journalist who also has a good knowledge of a news website and social media content and can apply their ability to creating posts that pop! And if you like writing food reviews, theatre reviews and interviewing people, now’s your chance. It sounds glamorous and it definitely has its moments. Some of my favourite times have been reporting on royal events and attending functions. On the other end of the spectrum, I love reporting on those who conquer adversity or work hard to improve their communities. That’s probably why I’ve been in the job for so long.

“My team is invaluable. I work closely with professionals. There’s experienced news editor Marilyn Barber, qualified proofreader Rebecca Smith, and journalism student Jecs Davies who give me excellent support.

“Managing director, Ben, oversees the office and keeps on top of the finances with Nick; design director Louis and his assistant Dexter produce some of the best design work locally; Mark and Simon dedicate their time and energy to marketing, and Mike keeps on top of distribution. You won’t meet a more hardworking bunch of people who are passionate about what they do and enjoy a bit of banter along the way.

“If you feel you can fit into this type of cohesive office environment and have all the right qualifications, can use a camera, and have a full driving licence, why not send me your CV?” Email to [email protected].

Janine adds: “After 25 years in journalism, I now want to devote time to my fiction writing and wish the next editor well. For someone with the right credentials and work ethos, being an editor at Pulford Publicity is a dream job.”

Museums tell Viewpoint how they are facing financial challenges

By Marilyn Barber

Museums do so much to enrich our local towns and villages, helping us to learn from the past, but sadly our local museums are facing challenges which could impact on their survival. Read the article on pages 4, 5 and 7 of March Viewpoint magazine, which includes comments from the general public 👇

29/02/2024

Dear Readers!

No this isn’t my last editorial, but after 26 years of writing them and editing magazines, that day is drawing closer. In many ways I will be very sorry to say goodbye to the team and all our lovely
readers who have said so many nice things to me over the years and supported our magazines through the lean times and the good.

My job is now officially available – see page 4.

When the post is filled, I shall be out the door like a shot, happy in the knowledge that the company is in the excellent hands of my two boys – well, they are grown men now – as they are so competent and devoted to Pulford Publicity.

Despite the highs and lows of working so closely with family and being ‘Janine’ rather than ‘Mum’, (I’m always Mum at home, thankfully), we’ve managed to make a good team and have great appreciation of those who work with us.

A self-confessed workaholic which my long-suffering husband Nick will confirm without hesitation, I have no intention of hanging up my writing boots.

I’ve dabbled with fiction since 1992 and always saw my job as an editor as a stepping stone to novel writing. Well, it certainly helped because since then I’ve written and self-published six novels and I’m about to publish a seventh, but the factual stepping stone, I realise, has really slowed my fiction progress down.

I can’t wait to find a new editor, and look forward to saying a proper goodbye when that happens.

01/02/2024

Hello Readers!

Another month whizzes by and the snowdrops are out.

February is the month my parents loved most because their garden turned white with a stunning blanket of snowdrops, many
were hand planted by them. After they died, their final resting place was at St George’s Church, Damerham near Fordingbridge where, every spring, there is an incredible show of snowdrops across the churchyard. To showcase this spectacle, the church holds a Snowdrop Weekend. This year it’s on 10 and 11 February.

For us it is a time to fondly remember my parents and tend to their plot as well as getting involved with the warmth of the snowdrop event. St George’s Church opens its doors to everyone for a cup of tea or coffee and homemade cakes during Snowdrop Weekend. It’s well worth a visit. Other spectacular snowdrops can be seen locally at Kingston Lacy this month.

The cold snap doesn’t seem to do these hardy winter, white flowers any harm but when it warms up, which was something Louis and myself were waiting for, it becomes time to help a toad across the road. We both volunteered for a local toad patrol and have enlisted Ben and Nick too. As I write, we were waiting to do our first shift because the temperature had just risen above five degrees and the toads were putting themselves at risk as they trekked to their favourite spot for a bit of spring fever.

Enjoy this mag. It is full of news, events and a competition, and if your piece didn’t go in as you’d hoped, keep sending us articles because when room permits, yours will feature in print.

Happy New Year to you all!

This editorial is written pre-Christmas and as I don’t have a crystal ball, I can’t tell you how it went, but I hope yours was memorable for all the right reasons.

Still fresh on my mind are Christmas events Marilyn and I attended for our magazines and social media. There is a ‘looking back’ spread which you can see on pages 28 and 29 to round the year off. Perhaps you are in one of the photos? Have a peek.
As this is our first issue of 2024, we have dedicated space to the new year, so if you are short of ideas for a ‘new you’ turn to pages 22- 29. There’s no need to go as far as our director, Louis, who had all his dreadlocks cut off for charity (pre-Christmas) after 17 years of growing them, but if you are going to do something drastic, do let us know.

We recently said farewell to Karen and wish her well in her new job. Uni student, Jecs Davies has come on board temporarily as a journalist and social media creator and has already taken us into the realms of TikTok. If you don’t already follow us on social media, you could make that your resolution – just a suggestion. www.dorsetview is where we post additional local news, so keep sending in your stories. We always try to give space to local campaigns because together we can make a difference.

Finally, what do you do with carrot tops? Give them to the rabbit? Throw them in the bin? I’ve found a new use for them. Turn to page 31 to unravel the mystery.

Could you help toads cross a busy road near Ringwood?

When the local toads start thinking in January about migrating to Blashford Lakes to breed and lay their eggs, the Ringwood & Poulner Toad Patrol will be helping them safely across the road.

Registered with the wildlife charity Froglife, who coordinate toad patrolling throughout the UK, the patrol is looking for new volunteers to save toads from being killed under the wheels of cars and vans and asking local drivers to help by slowing down and being patient.

Set up in 1989 and organised for 35 years by wildlife supporter Teresa Baker, the patrol is now run by Nicola Yorke – a volunteer since the 2021 season.
