DJ Murphy Publishers

DJ Murphy Publishers DJ Murphy is an award-winning, independent publishing company. The best way to discover DJ Murphy is to take a look at our magazines and websites.

Or have a browse around our online shop. We love providing first rate content for our demanding audiences and we believe that the passion we all have for what we do is reflected in the depth and quality of everything we produce. We’ve been publishing great, market-leading magazines for quite a while – since 1949 when PONY Magazine was launched! Journalist David Murphy (prompted by his pony-mad dau

ghters) saw a gap in the market for a magazine that was dedicated to the younger rider. Since then, generations of readers have grown up with our children’s magazines and many graduated naturally to Horse&Rider as they have grown into adulthood. In recent years we have widened our children’s portfolio, with magazines dedicated to some of the best known toy and TV brands. We have also been at the forefront of digital development with our pioneering websites, apps and online shop, and were crowned Independent Publisher of the Year in 2016 by the PPA, as well as receiving the prestigious award for Consumer Magazine of the Year for Horse&Rider. DJ Murphy doesn’t only have the confidence of horse riders and the equestrian industry, we are trusted by toy manufacturers and TV production companies worldwide who enjoy hugely successful partnerships with our creative teams. We are easy to deal with and fortunate to have excellent editorial and support staff. The real proof, however, can be seen in our postbag and email inboxes, which are filled every day with letters and drawings from the thousands of children who reckon that our magazines, apps and websites are awesome! DJ Murphy remains a privately owned business, which means we can focus on what we do without restraint. We are not distracted by the conflicting goals that the multi-nationals sometimes suffer, which means we can concentrate all our efforts on creating happy staff, happy business partners, and happy clients! We want our suppliers, customers and readers to enjoy working in partnership with us as much as we enjoy working with them.

Our ever-popular PONY Mag has won one prestigious publishing award and has also been shortlisted for another!

For the fourth time in a row, PONY has won the title of Newsstand Magazine of the Year – Children’s at the ACE Newspaper and Magazine Awards (NMA2023), held on 18 May 2023.

The NMA2023 recognises success and the very best in magazine publishing and PONY found itself up against Bluey (awarded highly commended) and Pokémon magazines in the final shortlist.

Following on from this success, PONY has also been shortlisted for the PPA Awards 2023, which focus on UK specialist media. These awards celebrate outstanding achievement, innovation and progress of publications within the consumer and B2B sectors, and PONY has been selected as one of only eight titles to reach the finals in the Children’s Brand of the Year category.

We are thrilled that PONY has again won this NMA award. It’s really down to all the hard work and dedication of the team, who have made sure we meet the needs of our readers in the print publication, on social media and the website, and also in our reader event, PONY Big Day Out.

We’re also honoured to be shortlisted for the PPA Awards and very proud to be recognised by the industry in this way.

Horse&Rider Magazine and SEIB Insurance Brokers partnership recognised with award short-listing.

Earlier this year, Horse&Rider Magazine teamed up with SEIB to spread the word when the Highway Code was updated to better protect horses and riders. As a partnership, the two companies created a car sticker which clearly depicted the 10mph and two metre passing rule which was introduced in January, and distributed it to both Horse&Rider subscribers and newsstand readers. The initiative has been recognised by a shortlisting at the PPA IPN awards for Commercial Partnership of the Year.

Nicolina McKenzie of SEIB says, “After being such avid supporters of the rule change, we were really pleased to partner Horse&Rider on this simple but brilliant idea. Not only did we help to spread a vitally important message to everyone who sees the car sticker in one of the thousands of Horse&Rider reader’s vehicles, but we had such positive feedback from both our own customers and Horse&Rider’s readers that it’s been a great exercise in conveying our brand values.“

The IPN awards take place in London on 25th November.

DJ Murphy Publishers’ equestrian teen title, PONY Mag has been recognised with shortlisting’s for three awards at the prestigious PPA IPN awards which take place later this month. The awards celebrate the best in independent publishing and celebrate those who have delivered standout work over the last 12 months. This year PONY Magazine is shortlisted for Media Brand of the Year, Event of the Year (PONY Magazine Big Day Out) and Cover of the Year (The Popcorn the pony issue).

Abi Cannon, Commercial Director at DJ Murphy Publishers said, “We are so excited for PONY to be nominated for so many awards. PONY has always had a holistic approach to meeting the needs of its readers across the magazine and digital channels, and now we’ve added PONY Magazine Big Day out into the mix it’s wonderful to be recognised for both Event of the Year and Media brand of the year.”

“We started working with Harlow and Popcorn in 2021 and so the beautiful palomino was the natural choice to be cover star of this year’s May issue, which coincided with Harlow’s first meet ups held at Badminton Horse Trials. The issue had huge success on the newsstand as well as being popular with subscribers, but being shortlisted for this hotly contested awards has surpassed all our expectations!”
