‘FILM AT FALMOUTH TAKES OVER THE TOWN’

Pixelate, formally Pixel8, was launched five years ago as a platform for BA Film students to exhibit their work to the public, and was taken over by students of the course as a series of intimate screenings in 2010. The reception these received inspired the team to turn the exhibition into a larger scale event and in 2011 Pixel8 Film Festival was born. A non

-profit event in collaboration with Little White Lies magazine, Warp Films and a number of local businesses, Pixel8 incorporated various exhibitions and student film screenings across three days. The venue’s 180 seat capacity was full on two of the three nights and was such a success that University College Falmouth commissioned it for a return in 2012. With a new team and a new brand, Pixelate aims to be more innovative and more inspiring than ever. This year we have once again secured local art house cinema, The Poly, as a venue from the 20th - 23rd June 2012. As well as a 35mm and digital projection cinema seating 180, the cinema also boasts wonderful gallery and exhibition space. The festival will open with a special screening of Warp's critically acclaimed Submarine, followed by three days of student films and exhibitions. Each day will feature a guest talk from an industry professional, including special appearances by Heat Film editor, Charles Gant, Warp Producer, Mary Burke and screenwriter James Henry. For those who miss any student films, there is a chance to see them again at our Pixelate Catch-up events which are being held at a number of venues around Falmouth during the Friday and Saturday of the festival. Children are also encouraged to get involved with the latest addition to the schedule, Pixelate Kids; a fun and informative experience aimed at young people with an interest in film and media. Festival director, Kate Linnell, talked about her intentions to expand upon last year’s festival, incorporating student film competitions with experimental, journalism and screenwriting exhibitions. “In 2012, Pixelate promises to be a festival where everybody is able to indulge in their love for the silver screen and interact with a range of student projects. By hosting at multiple venues, we are hoping to get the whole community involved.”

Tickets are free and can be reserved from The Poly, Falmouth, from the beginning of June. This excludes the opening night and Pixelate Kids screenings, of which standard admission applies.
