LEGENDARY DJ WALKER PASSES

Johnnie Walker has passed away at the age of 79, two months after calling time on his 58-year career because of ill health.

DJ Bob Harris, who took over the Johnnie's BBC programme after Walker's retirement, announced his former colleague's death his show last Tuesday.

Walker had pulmonary fibrosis, which is scarring of the lungs, a condition which makes breathing difficult.

He stepped down from presenting on Radio 2, at the end of October.

Johnnie Walker's long radio career was shaped by his early years as a pirate broadcaster in the 1960s, bobbing around on the ocean on Radio Caroline.

His DJ career began at the age of 21, when he was first given a chance to play records on 'Swinging' Radio England, a boat moored four miles off the Essex coast.

In return, they asked that he change his name - from Peter Dingley to the rather more rock 'n' roll-sounding Johnnie Walker.

The boat was one of a number of floating stations that had taken advantage of a loophole in the law that allowed them to get round the BBC's monopoly on the UK airwaves to bring the sound of 60s pop to the nation's radios - something the BBC had up to that point largely resisted.

Walker took to the rebel spirit. His years at public school had fostered a loathing of authority, and he had gone out of his way to fail his O-levels. Radio allowed him to embrace his passion - music - especially the rock, soul and underground sounds that were not making it to the top of the singles chart.

Occasionally, he would row across to another boat moored off Frinton-on-Sea, Radio London, to chat to a kindred spirit, a young DJ who was beginning to make a name for himself, John Peel.

His time on board also coincided with the government’s decision to crack down on the pirates. Walker was on air at midnight of 14 August 1967 when the law making the pirates illegal came in to force.

He read out a defiant speech declaring "we belong to you and we love you". His reputation as a symbol of the spirit of the pirates was assured.

However, in 1969 he switched sides and joined the establishment to the BBC where he stayed until this year.

WAYNE ROONEY LEAVES ARGYLE

Head coach Wayne Rooney has left Championship strugglers Plymouth Argyle by mutual agreement.

The 39-year-old former England captain oversaw just four league wins and suffered 13 defeats in 23 Championship games after taking charge of the Pilgrims in May.

He leaves with them at the foot of the division.

Rooney came to Home Park four months after being sacked by Birmingham City following an 83-day spell in charge that brought nine defeats in 15 games.

He and his players were booed following Sunday's 2-0 defeat by Oxford United which was their their sixth defeat in a nine-game winless run that began in early November.

Rooney defiantly said he did not take criticism "personally" after that loss, but it was enough to end the tenure of the man who was lauded as "the perfect candidate to provide the exciting and attacking brand of football" when appointed.

Under Rooney - who set scoring records for England and Manchester United during his decorated playing career - Plymouth have dropped to the bottom of the table, scored the joint fewest goals in the second tier and have conceded more than any other club in England's top four divisions.

Since the start of the season in August, Plymouth Argyle have suffered many heavy defeats such as a 5-0 at Cardiff back in the middle of October, 6-1 at Norwich in November plus a 4-0 at Bristol City. Boxing Day saw a 4-0 defeat at Coventry but the 2-0 away at Oxford was enough for all concerned.

Argyle must now look for a third permanent manager in eight months, whoever it is has a huge task trying to keep the Pilgrims in the second tier.

GULLS DRAW AWAY IN DORSET

National League South
Weymouth Town 2 Torquay United 2

Torquay United manager Paul Wotton says he is disappointed that his side were twice pegged back in their 2-2 draw at bottom-of-the-table Weymouth.

Will Jenkins Davies continued his excellent goalscoring form to give the Gulls the lead in first-half stoppage time.

Terras top scorer Brandon Goodship equalised soon after the second half got under way.

Cody Cooke headed in his second goal in as many games after an hour to put the Gulls ahead once more, but Goodship ensured a point with his second goal eight minutes from full time.

Torquay remain a point clear at the top of National League South and extended their unbeaten run to 12 games in all competitions.

"I'm really, really disappointed with the two goals we conceded, but we haven't lost the game and it's a point on the road and I think it's good that we're disappointed," Torquay manager Paul Wotton told reporters.

"I just felt like we lacked in the final third today that little bit of magic or that tiny bit of end product. The two moments of quality we did have was Oscar Threlkeld cross for Will and Jordan Young's cross for Cody.

"We were in those areas more times than twice in the game and I just felt like and wasted a couple of those opportunities."

Torquay United do remain top of the league with 44 points with Boreham Wood chasing in second with 43 points and Maidstone, Truro and Worthing all on 42 points.

Next up is the big Devon-Cornwall clash on New Year’s Day when Truro City come to Plainmoor for a 3pm kick off.

GRECIANS WIN AGAINST PIRATES

League One
Exeter City 3 Bristol Rovers 1

Exeter City came back from a goal down to win a breathless Westcountry derby 3-1 against Bristol Rovers.

The Pirates, who earlier in the day announced former Brighton defender Inigo Calderon would be taking over as their new head coach, took the lead just after the hour through Promise Omochere.

But Jack Fitzwater levelled 11 minutes later before Millenic Alli and Jake Richards struck to seal victory for the hosts.

After a first half of missed chances, certainly from Exeter, Rovers thought they had gone in front in the 59th minute when Isaac Hutchinson scored from close range, but after a lengthy delay, the assistant referee flagged for offside.

Three minutes later, Shaq Forde's shot was saved by Joe Whitworth, but the ball fell at the feet of Omochere, who tapped into an empty net.

Whitworth made a fine save to deny Forde's long-range effort as Rovers pushed for a second, but Exeter hit back after 72 minutes when Fitzwater powered in a header from Ed Francis' corner kick.

Forde thought he had put Rovers back in front, only for the flag to go up again, while Rovers substitute Scott Sinclair blazed a glorious chance over the bar from eight yards.

Exeter then went in front in the 78th minutes when Richards crossed to Alli and he took a touch, turned and fired instinctively past Josh Griffiths.

Whitworth's sensational one-handed stop from Gatlin O'Donker denied Rovers at the death and as they pushed for an equaliser, Exeter broke with teen starlet Richards following up to score his first league goal for the club and put the seal on a festive thriller at St James Park.

With this stunning win for Exeter they are in 12th position in League One with 30 points alongside Charlton in 11th.

On 31 points are Mansfield in 8th, Lincoln and Bolton. Barnsley in 7th with 33 points and Reading on 34.

Below City are Leyton Orient on 28 points with Wigan and Blackpool on 27 points. Stevenage are in 16th position with 26 points.

Next up is a home fixture against Crawley Town at SJP on Sunday 29th at 3pm. Then it's away to Wycombe on New Year’s Day at 3pm.
