Crewe Clocks Up 600th Meeting
The Crewe and District Coin and Medal Society was formed on 10th January 1968. From then until now it has met in an unbroken sequence which now spans almost 57 years. Over all that time, its meeting place has always been The Memorial Hall, Wistaston, near Crewe (shown here), although during Covid, of course, the society was obliged to meet remotely using Zoom.
Our meeting on 10th December, coinciding with the AGM, was the society’s 600th and to celebrate it we held a ‘Good Old Days’-themed evening featuring talks and displays about the early days of the society and how members started collecting. Following a tradition beginning in 1970, members then voted for their favourite talk and the Roy Griffin Trophy was awarded to the winner. Appropriately, this was Diane Edge-Robinson, daughter of Brian Edge, one of the driving forces in setting up the society all those years ago. A very well-attended evening was finished off with a buffet supper.
The society is in a healthy state. Although membership dipped during and soon after Covid, in the last couple of years it has grown thanks to a lively programme of events and links with local metal-detecting clubs, which have shared interests. Visitors are very welcome at our regular meetings on the second Tuesday of most months. Our next meeting will be in February, when we shall be hearing from banknote expert Pam West on the topic of ‘The Inimitable Banknote’. Please contact the Secretary Stuart Hallworth on 07828 602611 for details.
