The Folk Club is a worldwide eclectic folk show on Folk Music Notebook, Folk Friday Radio, West Norfolk Radio and Mixcloud, curated, produced and presented by Stuart Green. It first started in September 2020 when host, Stuart Green, was asked if he would like his own show. Entertainer Stuart, who is also a founder member of the band Isle ‘ave a Shanty jumped at the chance and hasn’t looked back si

nce . In the short time on air, this local show has quickly gathered a global audience right across the folk world. Stuart plays traditional and contemporary folk, roots and acoustic music on the show and draws upon a range of sources. The Featured Artist

In each show Stuart chooses a featured artist and has had a huge number of high-profile performers willing to take part, including folk royalty such as Show of Hands, Jon Boden, The Young’Uns, Gerry Colvin, Damien Barber and many more. Featured artists introduce and tell some of the stories behind their songs that they then share and Stuart constructs the show around them. Here We Are

This section of the show is very close to Stuart’s heart as he believes that everyone should have a chance to be heard. He recognises that there are thousands of musicians out there – up and coming as well as established artists – who don’t always get the opportunities to be heard so he set up this section of the show and invited artists, through social media, to make contact and share their music. He has had an overwhelming response and plays approximately three tracks each week. Some performers in this section have gone on to become Featured Artists too! The Folk Club Challenge

A regular feature of the show is the ‘Folk Club Challenge’. Voluntary performers are given a challenge, by Stuart, to rearrange and record a song of his choice and then when its ready, he plays it on the show. The Rest of The Show

The rest of the show gives Stuart the opportunity to play some of his favourite tracks from artists from across the UK and the rest of the world. It features news from the folk world, your requests and a great mix of folk, roots and acoustic music.

A couple of weeks ago I gave a shout out for help in creating a backing track for my song 'Beautiful Star' - about a 'Fifie' herring fishing disaster off the Norfolk Coast in 1875. An exhibition telling the interesting but complex story has just launched at the fabulous Trues Yard Museum in Kings Lynn. (https://truesyard.co.uk/)

Yesterday I was able to debut the song at the exhibition launch and afterwards, present the museum with a framed and signed copy of the lyrics (see pic below with the recipient Deputy Curator Gaynor Weston)

I'd like to publicly thank some people who were instrumental in the song reaching this point, Chris Fox for his visionary tweaking of the tune to lift the song, Ludwig O'Neill for adding guitar and piano and creating the backing track and Gedandtracey Stephenson for also recording a backing track which helped me to create the delivery - (and also Sean Cusack for offering)

I am hoping to record Beautiful Star along with some other self penned songs to create a solo EP in the near future. If anybody is able to help in a similar way, that would be great - please let me know and I will share my ideas with you.

I was very proud to sing my song yesterday and the whole process just reinforces the strength of the wonderful supportive folk community that I am proud to be a part of

TY

Stuart

This week's Featured Artists (Show 270) are Mishra

Mishra are a global folk band from the UK gathering international recognition. They draw together roots in UK traditional music with continent-spanning musical textures into joyous and breathtaking performances. Presenting finely crafted songs with stunning vocals and exhilarating instrumentals, Mishra span eclectic moods; from meditative raag inspired improvisations to high-energy celtic dance tunes underpinned by unstoppable percussive grooves. They draw on training in Indian classical, UK folk, contemporary classical, and a distinctive instrumental palette including tabla, banjo, low whistle, santoor, double bass, clarinet and an array of percussion. I chat with the guys at The Magpies Festival in the Summer plus Ford joins me on the show to introduce three tracks off their new album which features Deepa Shakthi.

Plus I also chat with Ray ‘Chopper’ Cooper ahead of his UK tour, and not forgetting this week’s ‘Here We Are’ artists, Joe Mansfield and The Temperance Two, Lauren Scott ft Karen Marshalsay and Ben Denny Mo.

This Week's Featured Artist (269) is Katie Spencer

Raised in the East Yorkshire flatlands on the fringes of Hull, Katie Spencer’s landscape has always been that of open skies and widening rivers. It is this sense of space and movement that flows through her assured guitar style and songwriting. She has just released her latest album entitled What Love Is, and I chatted to Katie in the Summer at Folk East and its from there that she introduces three tracks from that new album.

Plus I also chat with Grace Smith (Grace Smith Trio) and Archie Churchill-Moss ahead of their tour, and not forgetting this week’s ‘Here We Are’ artists, Joshua Arnold and Therine, Christopher Dean and LunaBarge
