UPDATE ON WHITEHAVEN HARBOUR 👇

This week I convened a meeting with the Minister for Water, Emma Hardy MP, and senior officials from the environment, energy and transport departments, Network Rail, the Environment Agency and the Mining Remediation Authority.

The purpose of the meeting was to bang some heads together as I’ve been going round in circles for months, with agencies refusing to take responsibility for developing and delivering a solution that restores our harbour to its natural state.

I’m pleased to say we made some progress. The Minister has agreed to establish a one-off, cross-government joint venture across all six departments and agencies with a role in this, co-ordinated by her officials at the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

That cross-government team will work up proposals to tackle the contaminated minewater and its impact on the Bransty tunnel and the harbour and work together to secure the necessary funding to deliver a treatment scheme.

This is more progress than was made in the 18 months prior to me becoming your MP and I will now be driving forward this work as quickly as possible.
