New Scottish cricket coaches appointed

Cricket Scotland appointed Gloucester batting coach Owen Dawkins as men’s head coach with former national captain Gordon Drummond taking over as his assistant. The pair take the reins leading into qualifying for the 2027 ICC world cup, the next T20 world cup cycle and with cricket poised to enter the Olympics in 2028. Dawkins, who succeeds Doug Watson who stepped down in September, was part of the coaching team that helped Gloucestershire win the T20 Blast for the first time in 2024, and as an ECB Level 4 coach is one of the most qualified cricket coaches in the UK....

Call for unlicensed Short Term Letting fee increase

Edinburgh Council’s regulatory Convener will ask The Scottish Government to increase the maximum penalty for unlicensed short-term letting. At present, operators can be fined £2,500 while those who run unlicensed HMOs and unregistered lets can be fined up to £50,000. During Monday’s Regulatory Committee meeting, councillors backed the convener, Cllr Neil Ross, writing a letter to the government. Cllr Ross said: “I think it is appropriate to highlight that there is a very significant difference between the maximum fine possible for an unlicensed short-term let compared to the maximum fine for an unlicensed HMO or unregistered landlord....

Building begins at new concert hall

The groundbreaking ceremony at the Dunard Centre, the first concert hall to be built in Edinburgh for a century, was held on Monday. The First Minister John Swinney did the honours to mark the beginning of the construction phase in St Andrew Square. The Scottish Government topped up the funding for the building recently allowing this phase to proceed. The call comes in an open letter just days ahead of a meeting with Mairi McAllan, the Housing Minister. Three woman have been convicted in connection with child cruelty and assaults in the 1970s and 1980s at two homes run by the Sisters of Nazareth in Scotland. The Scottish FA has announced Barclays as the first ever Naming Partner for The National Stadium – Barclays Hampden. Community gym named after local businessman gets go ahead

A bid to open a community gym in industrial units with the support of £250,000 of private funding has been given the go ahead by East Lothian planners. Joe’s Gym, is central to a new facility planned by Haddington Community Interest Company (Haddy CIC) in its town, and is named after local businessman Joe Forte. Haddy CIC, a non profit organisation run by volunteers with private donations, applied for planning permission to turn one of the main units on the site into the gym as part of plans to create a number of community facilities....
