New pubs, restaurants and off-licenses will not be prevented from selling alcohol due to too many of them being nearby, in a move a councillor has said will harm public health. Edinburgh’s licensing board voted to remove its overprovision policy on Tuesday, which allowed alcohol licenses to be rejected on the grounds that too many exist in an area. Councillors said the policy was “outdated” and suggested there was little evidence it had been effective in reducing harm....

The cost of home to school transport in Midlothian rocketed to more than 50% over its budget last year with warnings it could triple by the end of the decade Councillors described the overspend as ‘horrendous’ as it was given as a main reason for the council’s overall budget going more than £3million in the red. And they agreed to set up a cross party working group to ‘motivate’ those overseeing the service to find ways to cut the annual costs....

Action on a dangerous Edinburgh road is welcome, but needs to be taken more quickly, according to a city councillor. Early last month, an 80-year-old woman was hospitalised after she was struck by a black BMW on Ashley Terrace, an area where traffic campaigners have long said speed reduction measures need to be put in place. The council promised to take action almost three years ago, but little work has been carried out until recently....
