The Stewart Society

The Stewart Society We have a library and small museum. A typical Gathering will start on a Saturday with a buffet lunch, followed by the Annual General Meeting.

"…without the inexplicable personal fascination of the Stewarts, the long tragedy of their lives and reigns, and the poetry and romance to which it all gave birth, the world would unquestionably be poorer today…" The Society offers a range of services to both members of The Society and to members of the public who visit us at the Stewart Society Headquarters in George Street, Edinburgh. We may abl

e to help you with your family history search through our records and publications and we have an annual Gathering of Stewarts each year. Membership is open to all who bear the name of Stewart (in any spelling) Membership is also open to those who have a special connection with the Stewarts or a special interest in their history. The Annual Gathering
The Society holds a gathering of members in September each year - usually in Scotland - at a Stewart house or another place of Stewart interest or connections. In the evening there will be an informal dinner - with some country dancing - at a local hotel. On the Sunday morning, a visit to another place of interest to the Stewarts will conclude the weekend. The Gatherings attract anything up to one hundred members and a number of members plan a scottish holiday around the Gathering. Every effort is made to keep costs modest so that as many members as possible can attend. It is a friendly and informal occasion and a great way of making friends with other Stewarts. The Magazine
This appears annually and is an extremely professional publication containing articles of an historical or topical nature on matters of general or specific Stewart interest, book reviews, an account of the previous year's Gatherings, etc. An index is available which enables readers to refer to articles written between 1899 and 1975. (Work is in hand to update the index to the present day.) To anyone with an historical bent, the magazine alone is worth the membership subscription. The Newsletter
"Stewart News", the Newsletter of the Stewart Society, is issued to members once a year in December with a short update issued along with the Magazine in June. This interesting publication is packed full of information about Stewart Society events, publications, etc. and is an essential companion to the magazine. The Library and Portraits
Through the generosity of members past and present, the Society has formed a unique collection of books, pictures and memorabilia relating to Stewart history. These are housed at The Society's premises in Edinburgh, with other paintings being displayed at The National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh. The Stewart Society Museum
Our museum houses a growing collection of items brought together from Stewart history. The Stewart Society Archive
The archive includes family papers of over 200 Stewart families. These include family trees, genealogies, birth-briefs, heraldic items, manuscript family histories and much more. The Stewart Society Benevolent Fund
The Society's Benevolent Fund each year gives bursaries at St. Andrew's University to students who are Stewarts (or with mothers who were Stewarts.) Up to thirty bursaries, worth up to £250 per student, are awarded each year. Student Educational grants my also be available for Stewarts pursuing particular interests or studies - usually overseas.

🕯️ On This Day: The Death of Mary of Guise (1515–1560)

On 11 June 1560, Mary of Guise—Queen Consort of James V and mother of Mary, Queen of Scots—died at Edinburgh Castle after a turbulent regency marked by political upheaval and religious conflict.
Her final months were spent under siege, both politically and physically, as Protestant forces—backed by England—challenged her authority. Despite illness and isolation, she remained committed to her role until the end. Her body was later returned to France and buried at the Convent of Saint-Pierre-les-Dames in Reims.

🇪🇸 Spanish Steel in the Highlands: Remembering the Battle of Glenshiel 🏔️ 10 June 1719

Today we remember the Battle of Glenshiel, a dramatic and often overlooked episode in Scottish and European history. In a bold show of international alliance, some 400 Spanish soldiers joined Jacobite Highlanders to support the Jacobite cause.
It was Spain’s answer to the shifting power dynamics of the War of the Quadruple Alliance. The main part of the plan called for 5,000 Spanish troops to land in South West England, with a subsidiary landing in Scotland by an expeditionary force, led by Charles XII of Sweden. To facilitate this, Scottish Jacobites would capture the port of Inverness; however, Charles' death in November 1718 ended Swedish involvement, and rendered the Scottish operation largely irrelevant.

Despite this, in late March, a small force of Spanish marines and Jacobite exiles landed in Stornoway. Learning that the invasion of England had been cancelled when the Spanish invasion fleet was severely damaged by storms, they decided to march on Inverness as planned. They were intercepted and defeated at the Battle of Glen Shiel in June, ending the Rising in Scotland..

The Marian civil war in Scotland (1568–1573) was a period of conflict after the abdication of Mary, Queen of Scots, and her escape from Lochleven Castle in May 1568. Those who ruled in the name of her infant son James VI fought against the supporters of the Queen, who was exiled in England. Edinburgh Castle, which was garrisoned in her name, became the focus of the conflict.
Edinburgh Castle had been delivered to the Regent Moray and therefore the King by its captain, James Balfour. Moray had appointed Sir William Kirkcaldy of Grange as captain, but after Moray's murder in January 1570 his allegiance to the King's cause wavered. After the capture of Dumbarton Castle by the King's men in April 1571, Grange changed sides, occupying the castle and town for Queen Mary against the new Regent, the Earl of Lennox. There now followed what became known as the "Lang Siege". This only ended after English intervention in May 1573 and it was only surrendered on 28 May 1573.
