Edinburgh Now and Then 🏴
A few more from these series I’ve started doing this year:
1. St Giles Cathedral - old photo was probably taken circa 1880-1887, after a major restoration that was completed between 1872-1883, but before the Statue of Walter Francis Montagu Douglas Scott was erected in 1887
2. Mercat Cross from Parliament Square—the original meeting point for medieval traders and merchants, and a spectator spot for public executions. The Mercat Cross shown here dates from 1885 and is at least the third version of the old burgh landmark.
3. New Assembly Close - the old image shows a couple heading into a production by the Unnamed Theatre Company at the Boogaloo Café, New Assembly Close, during the Edinburgh Festival in 1972.
4. St John’s Street - this undated image shows the St John’s Land building and the adjoining tenements of St John Street, which connects the Canongate with Holyrood Road.
5. Moray Knox Church / Scottish Storytelling
Centre - Knox Free Church opened in 1853 and later merged with the congregation of the Moray Church. The Moray-Knox Church was demolished in the 1960s and replaced by the Netherbow Arts Centre during the 1970s. The Netherbow Theatre became a popular venue for Edinburgh Festival shows. The Netherbow was transformed into the Scottish Storytelling Centre, which was completed in 2006 and is integrated with Knox’s house.
