This is how Sandsend in North Yorkshire once looked around 60 years ago, compared to how it appears today.

This train line shut in 1958, and Sandsend Viaduct was demolished in the 1960s.

This month in history, September 1906, the 4-4-2 locomotive No 183, which had been built in July 1905, was given the name ‘Red Gauntlet’. The locomotive was one of a batch of 19 built in 1905 numbered 172 to 190. Many of them were unnamed at first but then some received names of characters and titles of the novels of Sir Walter Scott.

They were therefore known initially as the ‘Scott’ class and were joined in 1906 by a further batch of ten locomotives named after ‘Ladies’ in fiction and legend. When they were added to in 1907 by a batch of twenty named after Saints the whole class became known as the ‘Saints’.

Some of the ‘Scotts’ of the 1905 batch had been built as 4-4-2s (Atlantics) and these were converted to 4-6-0s in 1912 and 1913. No 183 was treated in this way in April 1912 and fitted with curved framing, after which the Great Western Railway official photograph reproduced here was taken. The locomotive was then renumbered to 2983 in December 1912. It was afterwards pointed out that the name ‘Red Gauntlet’ was incorrect and new nameplates fitted in June 1915 were ‘Redgauntlet’ which reflected the actual title of Sir Walter Scott’s novel.

There had been an earlier 4-4-0 broad gauge locomotive built in 1855 for the GWR and named ‘Red Gauntlet’. This locomotive ran with its two-word name until withdrawal in 1876.

'BRILL', British Railways Illustrated is known and respected for the depth and quality of its historically-based articles. Focussing on the nationalised and early modernisation era of British Railways from 1948 to the 1970s, any aspect of vintage railway operations is grist to the mill as long as it is well-researched and written. The camera, we are told, never lies, but it can be 'economical with the truth, so BRILL's team of contributors paint a bigger picture, with extended and informed captions bringing to life the classic black and white photography that constitutes the bulk of its content. Featuring a colour cover, 56 pages of text and, typically, 60-70 high quality black and white images, most issues include maps and plans/diagrams where appropriate. 'History with a good helping of nostalgia' is its hallmark with some humour thrown in. .

Bylines, now in its 26th year, focuses on the backwaters of our railway system, bringing to life long-gone industrial systems, country branches, narrow gauge and mineral lines. With a wide-ranging editorial remit the magazine covers the rolling stock, buildings and infrastructure, and its content is largely focussed on pre-1970s subjects, although material is planned and programmed for its interest and rarity and frequently strays outside these parameters. Featuring a colour cover, 56 pages of text and, typically, 60-70 high quality black and white images, most issues include maps and plans/diagrams where appropriate. The research skills and erudition of our team of contributors ensures an informed and enjoyable read with a light touch that matches its often out-of-the-way and off-beat subjects.

On this day in history – 14 August 1884, the Barry Docks and Railway company was incorporated to build docks at Barry and connect them to the Rhondda Valley, eventually turning the quiet village of Barry into a large town. The line was opened first between Barry and Cogan on 20 December 1888. Barry Docks and the line between Cadoxton and Trehafod were then opened with a ceremonial opening on 18 July 1889.

The company name changed to Barry Railway in August 1891. A one mile 18 chain extension from Barry to Barry Island was completed in August 1896. Then a separate company opened the Vale of Glamorgan section through Rhoose, Aberthaw and Llantwit Major on 1 December 1897 as far as Bridgend and Coity Junction. At first the traffic was minerals but passenger services were slowly added. For a short while, the company also ran Red Funnel steamers across the Bristol Channel from Barry to Weston-super-Mare and Ilfracombe but the work was taken over by the White Funnel fleet from Bristol.

The photograph shows Barry Railway 2-4-0T No 22, built by Sharp Stewart in September 1889 for passenger services on the short branch line from Barry Town to Cogan. The locomotive was altered to a 2-4-2T in 1898, became the Great Western Railway’s No 1323 at the grouping and was withdrawn in August 1926.

By 1918 the Barry Railway owned 148 locomotives (including some USA-built 0-6-2 tank engines), 184 passenger coaches and 2,136 goods and other wagons operating a thriving and profitable minerals and passenger traffic. By 1914 the import and export trade at Barry Docks was over 11 million tons a year with 3,456 ships handled. By 1918 the company had 88 miles of main and branch lines and 160 miles of sidings.

The Barry Railway became a constituent company of the Great Western Railway on the grouping of railways in 1922.

At first glance this looks very much like 0-6-0ST No 1363, now being restored at Didcot. However, No 1393 originated on the Cornwall Minerals Railway as a forebear of the Great Western Railway’s 1361 class. Our Going Loco blog this week gives the full details – just click on the link: https://bit.ly/DRC-going-loco and scroll down to 2 August.
