Spinning the plates… now all in the same place!

Over the last few weeks we’ve build a brand new website. Huge thanks to Ed and the Ice Room team.

The idea was to try and capture all the stuff I get upto in one place.

It makes it much easier to answer the question when I get asked what I do for a living!!!

Please take a look and let me know what you think!

Demons in the desert!

It's taken a while but we've put the whole story together!
The last 3 years have been crazy with this project and it didn't end how I would have liked!

The reason I do these things is to understand my own resilience and how to better cope. This one has certainly done that and in ways that I could not have imagined!

When you enter into this level of adventure and challenge there is no guarantee of success - far from it.

Therefore the partnerships and ultimately friendships that are built up around them are resilient and enduring.

Over the last 3 years the MotoJoe team headed by Joe Philipsz and Tatty Bogle have never faltered.

I am immensely proud to be clarssified as an ambassador by Vango and together we are all ready building up to a high schools STEM project!

So I didn't get to see Dakar but so much positivity has stemmed from Project Dakar!

Earlier in 2024 Tim Bradshaw attempted to race the Africa Eco Race. This is the original Dakar Rally. It is an extreme test of resilience and determination. ...

Veterinary Voices Hiking Group: Trauma Awareness Course, Lake District

As veterinary professionals we may feel like we are confident at dealing with medical emergencies and even CPR, would this be the same when faced with a human casualty? Imagine how you would react, away from a medical setting, with a human casualty and help is miles away.

After a 'Community Mastermind' session at London Vet Show, Co-founders of the Veterinary Voices Hiking Group, Robyn Lowe and Paul Horwood, realized that the factor holding a lot of people back from going out hiking and exploring was confidence. So, to help with this, Paul and Robyn have set up events throughout the year to help grow the community's confidence in hiking, navigation and outdoor safety.

The first event took place on the 17th and 18th of May in the Lake District, and was a two day event. Day One, a Trauma Awareness Course led by Mike Hope at Sandstone Communications and day two, a community hike across the Fairfield Horseshoe.

After arriving on Thursday night, staying at the incredible Camping Barn at Lowside Farm the group started the Friday morning with a basic life support session, before heading to Blencathra to work on some real life simulations. This allowed the team to understand that the terrain of casualties are often challenging and unlike what you find in a 'class room' environment.

The team also tackled Sharp Edge; many of the team were helped to cross under the support and guidance of the group leaders, ensuring that they gained confidence on more challenging scrambles, and could recognize the ways to safely traverse these ridge lines.

Day two was another great day for the Veterinary Voices Hiking Group, supported by Norbrook Laboratories GB and PetsApp who understand the importance of raising awareness of this initiative to get the profession out 'walking and talking' for both physical and mental health benefits.

The sun came out for a group walk, of around 18 Km, across the Fairfield Horseshoe. The group enjoyed mixed terrain, great views and lots of great conversation.

Next up is a Navigation Course in the Brecon Beacons to help upskill the community in navigation skills that will set them up for pushing their confidence and allowing more people to try new places safely. To join, please request to join our Facebook group, or email us FAO Robyn at [email protected]

Cody Fisher was stabbed in a Birmingham nightclub - Do you have a bleed kit?

Following the stabbing of footballer Cody Fisher there is a call for venues to be equipped with bleed kits, specifically a tourniquet.

This terrible incident is the result of mindless aggression and a fatal stabbing however the ability to stop a life threatening bleed is critical.

In the event of a major bleed you have just 2 minutes to save a life. Most first aid kits do not contain the correct equipment to facilitate this.

As you are reading this ask yourself:
- Where is my first aid kit?
- Could I get to it in 2 minutes?
- Does it contain a tourniquet?

This is something that the Sandstone Communications team and The ATACC Group have been passionate about and is integrated into all of our training and now its HSE best practice.

In 2024 the Health and Safety Executive amended the guidance on dealing with life threatening bleeds, training and the equipment that should be carried in order to deal with it.

If you work in any industry where a major bleed is a possibility this guidance affects you ...

Training is not about ticking boxes it is about understanding the specific hazard and levels of risk faced by a team or organisation.

Then designing training and scenarios specifically for them.

Rally teams often find themselves operating remotely in isolated locations. When they are testing they are often without the protective overwatch of the FIA medical team.

In these situations self-reliance is critical.

The science of adventure!

It is all about inspiring young people to study:

Science,
Technology,
Engineering
Mathematics

Whilst developing resilience and learning to cope with an ever changing world.

It is never to early to be inspired and the participation and enthusiasm from this group of primary school children was amazing!

Having outlined the challenge involved in the navigating from the south of France across Morocco all the way to Senegal the children were asked to identify what problems might need to be solved?

• Water
• Food
• Fuel
• Navigation
• Repairs
• Heat
• Punctures

Were all answers provided by the children.

Utilising the teams equipment we are able to demonstrate that learning STEM subjects plays a role in every aspect of this race.

Particular favourites were

The tyres that have no air – they are fitted with a Mousse system.

Not box ticking! Saving lives!

Don't take our word for it here is some feedback one of our delegates!

"The one day first aid training course provided by Sandstone Communications at Sussex Equine Hospital in January this year was first rate. The course was presented in a clear and concise way. A lot of thought had gone into making the content relevant to the participants and what they may encounter on a day to day basis in their line of work. The theoretical training was put into practice with highly engaging and realistic role play scenarios, reinforcing the knowledge that had been imparted by the extremely experienced and professional presenter. I would highly recommend this course to all equine and large animal practitioners".

Don't give up! - Ukraine - How can you help and why should you care?

Today is a significant day in terms of UK politics. As the new prime minister prepares to take office, a key factor in her success will be her ability to deal with rising fuel and food costs in the UK. Many are appealing to the government for direct support and asking for ways to reduce the cost of living. Few are suggesting solutions and fewer still are acting.

We live in an age of rapidly changing news stories. Trending stories disappear as quickly as they become live. Everything is a national crisis and on the verge of collapse. It's easy to see how catastrophic thinking sets in and people become defensive, focussing on their own needs whilst failing to see the wider picture and its knock on effects.

Companies rush to change their social media banners, release politically correct statements and all whilst discussing resilience!
We must ask ourselves what we are actually doing and where are we physically able to contribute, no matter how small it may seem.

My late father once advised me that I would always be judged by my actions over my words. Ironic as I am now a key note speaker!

In line with current trends, the war in Ukraine is taking a back seat and is no longer on trend! As a result no one is talking about the direct impact of the war on life in the UK. Despite safe sea corridors, the export of grain is still less than 50%. The squeeze on gas prices affects not only our fuel bills but it is also directly affecting Ukraines ability to produce fertiliser.

If the supply of gas remains stifled, a number of European countries will be forced to take backwards steps in terms of sustainable energy production, potentially having to resort to coal fired power stations.

All this before we discuss the loss of life, war crimes and human rights abuse which have been rife during the conflict.

During these times of high pressure it's crucial to decipher the Intelligence from the information and focus on what we can do. We are not suggesting that we are directly influencing the outcome of the conflict in Ukraine - although GoFundMe thinks otherwise! - what we are doing is everything that we physically can.

Since February, we have built networks inside Ukraine, studied the problem and focussed on what elements we can control. With the support of Vango, Chevron Traffic Management and STC- Trailers, Trucks & Towbars with have continued to supply first aid equipment and ration packs to those who need it most.

I spend much of my time discussing and helping organisations develop resilience in their systems and their people. The team from Sandstone Communications and Bluesky Experiences Ltd and are not asking you to place yourself in harms way or to spend days driving vehicles.

We are asking you not to give up supporting what we are doing ...

Its important to understand how the war in Ukraine is directly effecting your cost of living and what we can do to help. The Sandstone Communications team ar...
