: A wake-up call to animal cruelty-free cosmetics
The viral animated short film "Save Ralph" highlights a rabbit named Ralph who recognized animal testing for cosmetics as his job. This 4-minute stop-motion mockumentary is a campaign by The Humane Society International to end animal cruelty and was released on April 6. It is a wake-up call to the fact that countless animals are still suffering around the globe as test-subjects in cosmetics laboratory.
In the film, a crew is interviewing Ralph about his job as a test subject. At that time, Ralph is already suffering from blindness on his right eye, deafness on his right ear, and body pains because of countless testing. Ralph does not mind these at all as he said that it runs in the family. All his family members including his own children died from this type of job and he knows it will happen to him soon. While doing the interview, a human hand grasped Ralph away and led him to the laboratory where all other rabbits are off for testing. A chemical is then injected on Ralph’s good eye and after which, Ralph has gone blind.
While animal testing had been a long-time issue and thousands of campaigns against animal testing became popular globally, no campaign like "Save Ralph" has generated millions of views and caused public interest. This is due to the talent behind and the decision to make this as an animation.
The film wraps up with a powerful message, “No animal should die and suffer in the name of beauty”.
“Save Ralph is a wake-up call that animals are still suffering for cosmetics, and now is the time for us to come together, globally”, Jeffrey Flocken, HSI President quoted.
The film was written and directed by American filmmaker Spencer Susser. It was voiced by Oscar-winning writer-director Taika Waititi. It also features a wide array of artists in the industry, such as English comedian Ricky Gervais as the interviewer, American actor Zac Efron, American Actress Olivia Munn, French actress Pom Klementieff, Canadian actress Tricia Helfer, and Brazilian actor Rodrigo Santoro as rabbits.
Humane Society International continues to to and hope that this campaign will be an eye-opener to everyone.
A major leap was done by the Chamber of Deputies in Mexico which endorsed a bill to ban cosmetic animal testing in the country and will soon become a law.
