Thought for a Christmas Present…

‘Mervyn Grey, or Life in the R.I.C’ tells the tale of a young man going through the recruitment process of the Royal Irish Constabulary in Victorian Ireland, along with falling in love and establishing a bond with his estranged uncle.

This novel was written in the latter end of the 1800s by John Wilson Montgomery (1834-1911), sometimes known as ‘The Sweet Bard of Bailieborough’, based on his early career in the Constabulary. Montgomery later went on to become the Master of the workhouses at Bailieborugh (Cavan), Oldcastle (Meath) and Downpatrick (Down), and Clerk of the Union in Downpatrick, before retiring to Bangor, County Down. Alongside his work, Montgomery was a prolific poet, having his works published in the press and in several of his own publications. ‘Life in the R.I.C.’ was his only novel, with only three original copies known to exist.

This novel, made newly available, provides a fascinating insight into the life of an RIC officer, from recruitment, training at the Phoenix Park depot, to being stationed in a rural barracks – the perfect gift for anyone studying the period, or the early police force of Ireland.

Blurb:
Following the death of his father, and no other means of income, nineteen-year-old Mervyn Grey enlists in the Royal Irish Constabulary, leaving behind his mother and elder brother, to run the family farm.
After a chance encounter in the grounds of Phoenix Park, Dublin, and a further life-endangering episode, Mervyn Grey catches the eye of a young lady, which leads to him finally meeting his estranged uncle, elder brother of his beloved mother.
This work of fiction, written by J. W. Montgomery (1834-1911) - ‘The Sweet Bard of Bailieborough’ - was written following his own experiences in the R.I.C. between 1851 and 1856.
The story not only follows the blossoming love story of Mervyn Grey and the reconciliation of his family but gives the reader an insight into the life and times of the mid-1800s and ‘Life in the Royal Irish Constabulary’, from recruitment and Depot life, to being stationed in a country barrack and all that that entailed.

The sales of this book will go towards the production of a biography of the author, John Wilson Montgomery, poet, author, antiquarian, master of the workhouses of Bailieborough, Oldcastle and Downpatrick, and Clerk of the Downpatrick Union.
