Check out the good work of the Downham Solidarity Fund, provided over fifty grants to people in Downham Market in financial need, all possible by donations from people within the community.

Happy Halloween 🎃

We’ve provided financial support to 3 people in October all from the donations we raise from the Downham Market community. This time last year we saw many people asking for support with energy bills as the weather gets colder, we expect to see this again.

This month we passed an amazing FIFTY grants given out since Downham Solidarity Fund started last year. Huge thank you to everyone who has supported by donating, sharing and helping to spread the word!

The decision has been made to make the grants up to £40, previously up to £50, starting from 1st Nov. This is to allow the limited funds to help more people. Over half of grants we've provided so far are below £40 already, averaging £36 since we started, so we think this is a fair and positive change.

Last but definitely not least on our series of questions to candidates seeking our votes in the General Election, the increasing urgency of climate change and the state of our environment.

We asked: Water companies polluting our rivers, incinerators polluting our air, and the ongoing expansion of fossil fuels in Cumbria and the North Sea pushing us closer to climate chaos. People are increasingly worried about the cost to our environment, how will you stop pollution and make polluters pay?

We asked candidates: People are still feeling the increased cost of living while big corporations, such as energy companies, are reporting record profits. Many people feel the economy isn’t working for them, how will you redress the balance?

Second up in our series of questions to candidates vying for your vote during this election is the topic of housing. Keep an eye out for two more questions in the coming days.

We asked candidates: Many young people are priced out of home ownership, the so-called Generation Rent, and rents increased by record levels this year. On the sharpest edge, homelessness jumped by 16% last year. How will you ensure that everyone has access to affordable and high quality housing?

It's General Election time! Here at downhamweb we've asked candidates in our area four key questions on topics that matter to you. Over the coming days we will post each topic so you can see what the candidates have to say.

First up is the NHS. We asked candidates; the roof of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital is still held up with thousands of props, and promises of cash for a rebuild haven’t materialised. People feel this is a local symptom of the ongoing treatment of the NHS overall. How will you ensure the long term health of our National Health Service?

See their answers here: https://www.downhamweb.co.uk/nhs-ge2024/

The General Election 2024 is upon us. Once again, candidates will be vying for our votes. Debates, manifestos and promises. It's with a heavy heart that the decision has been made to close the website on 1st April.

If anyone is still interested in taking the website on (with training and support) please do make yourselves known, or the site will officially go offline next week. The site still gets thousands of visits and represents a decent business opportunity for someone. A few people expressed an interest but nothing came of it.

It would be a shame to lose it but unfortunately I can't run and support the site from Devon.

Thanks to everyone for your support over the years.

www.downhamweb.co.uk is seeking a new owner!

https://www.downhamweb.co.uk/for-sale-downhamweb-is-looking-for-a-new-owner/

"I set up downhamweb shortly after I moved to the town in 2005. My main business was (and still is) as a web designer, so - as well as benefitting the community I loved, the site helped to demonstrate what I do, and generate enquiries for my company Lingo Design.

It worked so well that I never really had enough time to properly develop downhamweb's revenue side of things - though it always showed great potential.

The site has been busy and popular at times, getting thousands of views daily, and earning a modest income. However, due to a little neglect over the last few years this has slipped and is reflected in the price - though the site is still getting 1000s of visits and a small residual income.

Since I have now relocated to Devon to be closer to family, I would love to see a new owner at the helm - so the site could continue and grow.

As part of the sale I'm offering a comprehensive handover, including training and support delivered over Zoom to learn to operate the site.

The site would suit a person local to the area looking to run their own small business. Good computer skills would be an advantage. The advertising and revenue could be increased and the events and business directory sections could be sponsored, once updated.

I hope the site finds a new loving owner. I have given a lot of time and support to the site and would love to see it continue to serve the community that was such a great home to me for so many years.

Thank you to everyone who supported it over the years. Please help the site live on and prosper!

Please feel free to ask any questions"

Liz Pendleton

Borough Council offers support to resolve Downham Market Town Council issues

The leader of the borough council of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk has made an offer of support towards resolving the current issues with Downham Market Town Council.

Councillor Stuart Dark MBE has written to the Mayor of Downham Market Councillor Jenny Groom with a financial commitment to help fund expert mediation for parties within the council as well as externally to address the current conflict.

Even though the borough council is an entirely separate and impartial entity from the town council, Councillor Dark has made the suggestion in order to achieve a positive conclusion to the current challenges.

The offer of fifty per cent of the cost of mediation is in addition to assistance the borough council has provided to date in the form of monitoring and complaint handling.

Councillor Dark commented: “The borough council is keen to see the issues resolved with Downham Market Town Council and we are concerned about the impact that the ongoing difficulties are having in the town.

“We have been in dialogue with the town council and are keen to find a way to offer meaningful support to help to bring an end to the current situation.

“For this reason, even though the town council is separate from the borough council, we are offering to make a significant investment in professional mediation. I have extended this offer to the town council and we will be very happy to progress this should the councillors wish to do so.

“I, like everyone else, look forward to seeing an end to this situation so that all parties can move forward for the benefit of the town.”
