From Yorkshire Music Industry Expo 2025, the Funder Session with Youth Music highlighted what emerging artists and creative teams really need to move forward.

Clear planning, realistic funding routes, and the value of mentorship came through strongly. Not as theory, but as practical guidance rooted in lived experience and real pathways.

This is exactly the kind of insight we aim to create space for at Higher Rhythm. Supporting people to turn ideas into action, step by step, with the right support around them.

More from the Expo to follow.

We've been asked a few times recently why we give equipment away instead of selling it, so here goes:

✅ We give away equipment we are not using anymore, for precisely that reason, we're not using it anymore… it's a crime if good equipment isn't being used in our opinion, so it's better that somebody enjoys it rather than it gathering dust on our shelves.

💰 It's more efficient for insurance purposes because we pay per value; for every piece of equipment we give away, our insurance premium reduces.

✅ It's also more efficient space-wise. We don't have infinite space to store things, especially things we don't really need anymore, so having a little ‘spring clean’ is useful, and can also be cathartic! Good for feng shui as well, possibly…

✅ A lot of people are struggling financially at the moment and to be fair, in the music industry, a lot of people always struggle whilst they try to build a sustainable career, so why not share our blessings and donate free equipment.

💰Unless something is worth over £500, it’s not financially viable to sell it. As well as the general hassle of eBay or FB Marketplace, the staff time it takes to make sure a piece of equipment is cleaned up, running perfectly, then taking a photograph, listing it, responding to questions, packing it, posting it... it’s actually a net loss. So, simply sticking it on social media and then picking people randomly who then come and collect it from the studio, is the path of least resistance.

✅ It feels like the right thing to do; we're a social enterprise after all. It's also generally musicians that want the equipment and obviously that aligns with what we do as an organisation.

✅ It feels good, we get that little dopamine rush when somebody comes to the studio and gets something for free and you can tell they're really appreciative. It's nice to be nice.

If you have things you don't need or use anymore gathering dust in your business, consider some of the above benefits of simply giving it away🙏🏼

Incidentally, the desk we are giving away ATM was actually kindly donated to us a few years back by the PA hire company we work with, and having invested in a new mobile desk to replace it this year, we're now passing on the love... See how this works? 😊

One of the things we really love is when our alumni achieve good things then come back and tell us about it.

It's even better when they tell us they sailed through their course at University because they'd already learned everything at Higher Rhythm 😊

Thanks to Jenko for giving up his time this week to talk to our current National Diploma students 🙏

Today we were fortunate to have another one of Doncaster's musical craftsman visit the studio to help out with a few bits.

Matt Ferguson from Yorkshire Guitar Repairs stayed with us all day to service our guitars and bass guitars. He also generously spent time sharing his knowledge with staff and students. 🎸

He's so much of a perfectionist that he worked right up until the time we locked up, on a Friday as well… an absolute gent 👌🏼

There are so many talented music professionals in this city, it never fails to amaze us 🙏🏼

Despite being a very busy guy, Paul Munday Drums finds time to call into the studio every now and then to help us with a few odds and ends. As well as servicing the Studio kit today, this absolute gent spent time talking to staff and students about his craft and sharing his knowledge.

Today was even more of a pleasure as we were able to donate one of our spare drum kits to the Scott Johnson Foundation a small foundation run by Paul to honour the memory of our mutual friend Scott Johnson. Amidst a stellar career as a drum technician for artists such as Keane and Radiohead, Scott, a local lad known and loved by many in the Doncaster music community, tragically lost his life in a stage collapse in Canada.

Paul has selflessly dedicated a big chunk of his life since to redistributing drum kits in Scott's name, to people and organisations who could benefit, but can't afford to buy their own.

It honestly made our year to hear that Paul already has a children's home lined up ready to receive the drum kit we donated, just in time for Christmas ❤

If you have an unused drum kit stuck in your spare room or garage and would like to see it go to a good cause, please consider donating it to Paul for the foundation (follow the links in this post) 🙏🏼
