🥂 RAISE A GLASS 🥂

Today we’re celebrating 1 year of the Sanyu Sisters! 🎂

A year ago today, we released our first episode of our first series: ‘Sidestepping COVID; Keeping Research on Track’! 🎧

First, we’d like to express our gratitude to all of our inspirational guest speakers, who have all helped make our first year so wonderful! 💕

We’d also like to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who has supported us by listening and sharing our podcast, it truly means so much! 🥳

We’ve evolved hugely since we started, and have even expanded our team! One thing that hasn’t changed is our passion for maternal and newborn health though, and we’re so excited to see what this next year has in store for us! ✨

🌎CLIMATE CHANGE🌎

We’ve all heard about it, we’ve all spoken about it… But have you thought about it in the context of Maternal and Newborn Health??? 💭

This is something that Veronique Filippi drew our attention to when she spoke to us in the latest podcast episode!

Climate change has been identified as the biggest global health threat of the 21st century. Pregnant women and newborns are VULNERABLE populations and at risk of harmful effects in the context of climate change, whether directly or indirectly

This could be from heat stress, extreme weather events or air pollution, potentially impacting both the immediate and long-term health of pregnant women and newborns 🤰🏻

Read this paper to understand more about the threat climate change poses to pregnant women and newborns ➡️ https://obgyn.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/aogs.14124

👀BLINK AND YOU’LL MISS IT👀

Our latest podcast guest Veronique Filippi spoke to us about her work on Near Miss Events in Global Maternal Health

Near Miss Events (NMEs) have been defined as complications that immediately threaten the woman's survival but do not lead to her death

NMEs can be considered five main diagnostic groups:
🩹Haemorrhage (leading to shock, emergency hysterectomy, and blood transfusion)
🩺Hypertensive diseases of pregnancy (eclampsia and severe preeclampsia)
🤰🏻Dystocia (uterine rupture and impending rupture)
🦠Infections
🩸Anemia

The studies and results on NMEs in developing countries have been an overlooked area in research 📊
NMEs are an opportunity to assess the effectiveness and performance of obstetric services

🧊TIP OF THE ICEBERG🧊

Veronique Filippi spoke about near-miss data in global maternal health during her chat with Amber. Her work has looked at near miss events, which are complications that immediately threaten the woman's survival but do not lead to her death.

Near miss events can be considered under the ICEBERG model of Maternal Mortality and Morbidity - MATERNAL DEATHS ARE JUST THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG

The iceberg model is much loved in Public Health for good reason! It is a good reminder not to lose sight of the issues faced by women during pregnancy and after birth.

We encourage you to have a look at some of the causes of maternal morbidity that contribute to the burden of women who SURVIVE pregnancy but with complications/

Maternal public health must address the tip of the iceberg of course, but also needs to address the bulk that sits below the surface

💡EPISODE REFLECTION💡

Our latest podcast episode has been available to listen to for a WHOLE WEEK now… and we have been reflecting on points that have resonated with us ✨

One of the themes that stood out to us was that of staying motivated to ADVOCATE for unheard voices across the Globe 🌎

One particular point we have been thinking about was the added pressure on RECOVERY after birth that some women face 🏥
For those unable to afford any further hospital fees that may occur due to complications with mother or baby, this concern may interfere with the healthcare they receive 🤱🏽

Just some food for thought 💭

Catch up with the episode if you haven’t already had a chance to listen!

Dr Victoria Kinkaid introduces us to a project she has been involved with, aiming to provide awareness and education on FGM to medical students and importantly to push and promote the topic of conversation. SWIPE TO LISTEN

853 responses from 27 UK universities showed 97% of medical students felt they needed to know more about FGM, with two thirds reporting having no teaching or exposure at all.

What is YOUR background and how much do YOU feel you know about FGM?

Do you feel like you know enough??

You can follow along with this project on twitter

🍳ACCOUNTABILITY BREAKFAST🍳

We are aware it has been the UN General Assembly in the last few weeks. PMNCH held an accountability breakfast on 22nd Sept focusing on achieving greater equity for women, children and adolescents in Africa. But WHAT IS AN ACCOUNTABILITY BREAKFAST??? 🤔

This is where PMNCH strives to hold governments accountable for commitments that have been made to women, children and adolescents and seeing what they have ACTUALLY done. Putting money into action 💰

Multi-stakeholder involvement places focus on identifying big gaps and issues in GMNH… and innovative solutions! You can have a nosey for more information here…

Our most recent guest Vanessa Brizuela used to work for PMNCH, listen to her episode here…

🌎CROSS-COUNTRY COLLABORATION🌎

There are 195 countries in the World, each one with it’s own population, culture, disease burden and healthcare challenges. A “one size fits all” approach to Global Health is clearly not the answer! 🚫

HOWEVER, there is always something that we can LEARN from our colleagues in other countries across the Globe - collaboration shares experience, advice and learning opportunities that we wouldn’t otherwise have 📚

It’s important when considering the opportunities for cross-country collaboration that we don’t get tunnel vision and forget about the big pictures and all the areas (and potential LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES) that we can turn to!

🚫STOP SEPSIS🚫

The 2017 WHO-led Global Maternal Sepsis Study (GLOSS) looked at the identification and impact of maternal infections and sepsis - the major causes of death and disability in women during pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum and post abortion 🤰🏻

Our most recent guest Vanessa Brizuela and her colleagues published a paper evaluating the impact that GLOSS had on awareness of maternal sepsis among healthcare providers 🦠

Sometimes an increase in RECOGNITION of a problem can be just as important as any other healthcare intervention 🔎

The paper concluded: “Awareness raising campaigns can contribute to an increase in having heard of maternal sepsis and an increase in provider perception of confidence in making correct decisions. Offering the information to make accurate and timely decisions while promoting environments that enable self-confidence and support could improve maternal sepsis identification and management.”

🌎GLOBAL INSTITUTIONS🌎

➡️In our latest episode Vanessa discussed the role of global institutions moving forward in Global Maternal and Newborn Health.
🗺There will always be a need for institutions such as the WHO as a watchdog for certain research projects in healthcare such as research into violence against women and girls.
🚢They are needed to steer the ship of public health, allowing for bidirectional learning between countries as well as their crucial role in pandemics
🤝But the end goal is individual communities and regions able to work together on topics that matter most to them

What did you think of of this topic in Vanessa’s episode?

🏥 WORLD PATIENT SAFETY DAY 🏥

The theme for WHO World Patient Safety Day 2021 is ‘Safe maternal and newborn care’. 🤱

Across the world, around 810 women are dying each day from causes related to pregnancy and childbirth. Furthermore, around 6700 newborns die each day.

The majority of these deaths can be avoided with safe and quality care provided by healthcare professionals working in supportive environments. 👥

This World Patient Safety Day, we want to celebrate those who are currently working tirelessly to keep patients safe, with an honourable mention to some of our amazing podcast guests! 🙏

Thank you for doing what you do! 💪
