February has stacked up to be one of Dubrek’s busiest months yet. There’s something happening every day in the venue space and we have some great new collaborations coming up over the next couple months with The Indie Night , This Feeling, Derby Uncovered along with our old friends Outtamind, Psychic Dancehall and Derby Jazz.
The recording studio and rehearsal rooms are the busiest they’ve ever been; in January I’ve worked with and completed projects for Kez, Sunwheel, Lefthouse and The Rogue Embers, then there are upcoming sessions recording Black Country doom metal legends O***m Lord, Notts chaps Noisemakers Guild, Derby’s Skeeve, new indie rockers on the block The Output, a meditation app and finally BTEC students from Anthony Gell school.
Somewhere in the midst of all this I’m working on my own Goddesses record 😂. Jayx

Monday night at Dubrek Studios - come down and join in at our beginner friendly jam!

Monday the 27th of January 2025, at Dubrek Studios will be the First Jam of the year!

As you probably know by now, less than a year ago, I have started a new journey with music improvisation with my Band Tokamak using that really fun system of hand signs.

From this year, each Jam will have a moment where we will use signs to play. Don't worry, the beauty of this hand signs system is that, it doesn't require any knowledge or a high level to be able to play a song. We can easily mix a musician who is just discovering the beauty of music with someone playing for 3 decades!

The great thing is that it will be a lot easier for each of us to find our space and being comfortable repeating an easy pattern of a few notes.

This is basically a free workshop! 🤟🤘🖖🫳👌🫷🫴

The rest of the jam will remain totally free with some games,... as it used to be.

For the rest, free entry, backline provided, from 7pm until 11pm.

I've got a new show opening on the 1st of February at Dubrek Studios History in Dust, is a collection of new lime plaster fresco works.

This new body of work continues my interest in using traditional materials and techniques to explore connections between myself and the natural environment.

The details:

This week we were lucky enough to come runners-up in the rebate scheme prize draw, run by our suppliers ! We thought it would be nice to keep the fun going, so we’ve added a few extra bits to the prize pot and will be giving one of our customers a chance to win some lovely Ernie Ball accessories, a Maxon OSD9 Overdrive and a £25 Hippo Guitars voucher. Totaling over £350!

There will also be some other small prizes available for runners up!

1. Send us a photo which shows something you’ve bought from us - it can be anything at all, whether it’s a guitar you purchased, a few pedals in your collection or just one of your favourite plectrums. It can be an arty picture, a photo from a gig or just a quick snap. Get creative if you like! Send us your photos through email, Facebook or Instagram - that’s it!

2. A random winner will be pulled for the main prize and we’ll hand-select a few of our favourite photos to win runners-up prizes. The cooler/funnier/more unique the photo is, the higher chance you have of securing a runners-up spot! There may even be space for some honourable mentions

3. We’ll be sharing some of our favourite photos to our social media when the winner is announced - by submitting the photo you are constenting for it to be potentially shared on our social media pages. No name/username details will be shared, solely the image provided.

We are a band originally from the depths of Derbyshire now living and working from the great city of Nottingham. As a three we have been playing music together in some form or another for around ten years now, and we don’t plan on stopping any time soon as far as I am aware. Marvin’s Revenge started upon our move to Nottingham, and since then we have met and worked with incredible musicians and artists both within the local area and beyond.

Over the past year we have worked hard to move further afield and bring our music to new audiences both across the UK and, more recently, outside of it. Out of this a new opportunity arose, we have been invited to play the New Colossus Festival in New York City.

The festival is a 5-day showcase event focused on connecting emerging artists with new industry contacts and providing networking opportunities. We are excited to say the least, but are also very aware of the challenge that lies ahead. After two long months of applying for funding from various foundations, we received the final news that we wouldn’t be getting any. So on to plan B.

As many of you are probably aware, the music industry is in a bit of a state at the minute. Even when seemingly doing everything right (touring, selling merch etc.) it is very difficult to turn over any sort of profit, especially not enough to take us half way across the planet, So making the decision to self-fund this trip was not an easy one.

This is where we need your help. We have started several fundraising initiatives including this crowd-funder so that if you wish to help us out you absolutely can. We have just over a month to raise as much as possible so any donation is welcome, no matter how big or small.

As a final note, this festival represents a hugely important opportunity for us. Alongside presenting our live show to festival goers, we aim to use this time to find new people to work with in the next steps of our journey. To anybody who choses to donate or has supported us in any way in the past we are eternally grateful and thank you.

What a fantastic night with Happy Tuesdays at Dubrek. It was standing room only as we welcomed our regulars and some fabulous new faces. We loved the ribald audience interaction, volunteers and stage announcers.

Opening act Michael McKenzie had the audience in stitches at his beautifully crafted medical jokes. Fantastic new comedian, Zig Sarnie was hilarious and Slightly Psychic Cynthia a favourite with the Goth contingent. The evening was brought to a joyful close with the magnificently silly Stevie Gray.

Remember you saw them at Dubrek before they were famous.

Put February 11 in your diary for another fantastic evening of fun with Lubna Kerr and Justina Seselskaite. Book your tickets early, so we can fetch more chairs from our Nana’s house.
