A PERSONNEL TRIBUTE
It was announced that Reginald Spencer had died on the 25 September 2022.
He had been a member since the start of Hospital Radio in Crewe making his first broadcast on the inaugural programme of the station on the 15 November 1968 at the Coppenhall Hospital Studio.
By 1970 Reg was a regular presenter of the Hospital Radio Quiz which was broadcast live with the final in 1970 being recorded at stage at the Rolls Royce Valentine Pavilion.
At the AGM in 1971 Reg was acting as one of the Auditors for the society.
In the January 1982 New Years Honours list Mr Reg Spencer was to receive the M.B.E. for his work in the community including his 15 years of broadcasts with Hospital Radio as well as services to Rolls Royce where he worked for many years. In April 1982 Mr Reg Spencer was pictured outside Buckingham Palace after receiving his MBE award.
On the 6 April 1989 Reg became a member of the Committee for the first time as the Outside Broadcast representative in charge of the Football commentary at Crewe Alex.
In 1994 Reg organised a sponsorship scheme to help fund the phone line used for the Football commentary with local businesses paying for an advert during the commentary of the Saturday Matches and mentions during the daily broadcasts. The scheme continued for that season and into 1996 but as interest dropped off the sponsorship started to dry up.
In April 1995, Reg swapped his commentary position on the committee for that of Chairman taking over from Cliff Carr who had resigned from the society.
In January 1998, Reg arranged for the phone bill from the Gresty Road Stadium to the studio for Football commentary to be paid by the Crewe Alex Football club which meant that getting sponsorship for that funding was no longer needed and freed up the society to use its finances for other daily programmes and technical issues.
Also in January 1998 Reg arranged for a spare computer to be put into the studio to put the record catalogue onto it to make it easier to find tracks for requests. After a few teething problems choosing a system that everyone could use it soon became a useful tool for presenters and is still used today in the studio.
In May 1999 Gresty Road was redesigned and the red commentary box used for the commentators for many years was consigned to the skip and the commentary position was now in the open air at the top of a new large stand. BBC Radio Stoke interviewed Reg about the new facilities and the loss of the red box.
In 2002 Reg organised an answer phone for the studio so patients and relatives could leave requests for the presenters that night.
In June 2005, the Hospital decided to rewire the studio and allowed the society to make changes to the floor plan with the quiz studio now becoming the main presenter’s area and the middle studio being made into a meeting room. However to make this happen all the studio equipment had to be moved out of the hospital and Reg donated the use of his garage to accommodate the items until they could be returned to the new studio in August 2005.
In April 2007 Reg decided to give up the role of Chairman to David Owen and was due to leave the society altogether but he was offered the role of Vice President an Honorary position (Voted on once a year) that meant he could still have an interest in the society and would be able to contribute his time and knowledge of the past to help run the society without that full time commitment.
From 2007 to date Reg helped with that advice to past and present Chairman’s as well as keeping an eye on the society.
His commitment to Hospital Radio over the years has been 100% and his contribution to programmes from Quizzes to interviews with the Mayor’s and commentary on numerous football matches has helped mould the society into what it is today. HE WILL BE SADLY MISSED BY ALL WHO KNEW HIM.
