You see this age matter, eh? Back home, it’s like a sacred mystery. You no fit just ask someone you’re not close to, “How old are you?” Ah, it’s not done!
We’ve grown up knowing that asking such a question—especially to someone older than you—can seem like di$respect. So you can imagine my shock when I landed here, and on my first day at work, wetin dem use greet me naa “Hello Edith, how old are you?” 🤣

For my mind, I was like, “Ehn? Wetin this one wan use my age do naa 😆?
At first, I didn’t know this was a very normal thing here. Nobody dey hide their age, o! In fact, not only will they tell you their age, they’ll tell you their mama and papa age, their grandparents’ age, and even the age and name of their pet —whether you asked or not! 😭

At first, I was dodging the question like wetin be all this one naa 🤣. I would smile awkwardly and change the topic. But over time, I realized it wasn’t that deep. For many people abroad, it’s just their way of figuring out how to relate with you. They want to know if you’re their age group or their “auntie/uncle” so they can adjust how they talk to you. For them, it’s not about disrespect or sizing you up—it’s just vibes and maybe small curiosity.

That’s not to say everyone cares about your age. Some people will vibe with you no matter what. But for the ones who ask, I’ve learned not to overthink it. Na their way of getting to know you better, simple as that.

That said, I still feel reluctant to answer sometimes, but I do anyway🤣.

How do you feel when someone you’re not close to asks you, “How old are you?” Does it just slide, or do you suddenly feel like guarding it because this age matter still never sit well with me o 😅

As the year ends, it’s natural to feel disappointed if you didn’t achieve all your goals or make as much progress as you hoped.
But don’t let self-blame overshadow your journey. Life isn’t about perfection; it’s about growth, resilience, and perseverance.

Progress isn’t always obvious—it can happen in quiet moments when you choose to keep going despite obstacles. Instead of focusing on what went wrong, take pride in the small wins and the strength it took to navigate challenges. Every step forward, no matter how small, counts.

Remember, falling short doesn’t define you. It’s okay to have setbacks—they’re part of being human. What matters is that you don’t give up. The end of the year isn’t the end of your story; it’s the start of new opportunities.

Take this time to reflect on how far you’ve come, the lessons you’ve learned, and the growth you’ve experienced.
Celebrate your journey, no matter how imperfect it may seem. Be kind to yourself, and embrace the new year as a chance to dream bigger, try again, and continue evolving.

You are a work in progress, and your best is still ahead. Believe in yourself and your ability to create the future you desire—you’ve got what it takes.

If you plan to relocate and have children (or plan to have any), please start incorporating gentle parenting... e get why o.
Most countries abroad take the welfare of children very seriously. It’s not just about raising "well-behaved" kids; it’s about creating a safe, nurturing environment where children feel respected, heard, and valued. This isn’t just a suggestion—it’s a necessity.
How you speak to your child is the foundation of gentle parenting. Words matter—using kind, patient language creates a positive atmosphere for your child to thrive in. Gentle parenting emphasizes teaching children through understanding, not through fear.

In many places, practices like physical discipline might be seen as h@rmful, and what’s acceptable in your home country might not be in your new environment, so take the time to learn local parenting norms.

Not adopting gentle parenting could also lead to misunderstandings with those around you. In many countries, people are quick to report behavior they see as h@rmful. A moment of frustration could be misinterpreted, leading to unnecessary interventions.

Raising children abroad may come with its challenges, but it’s also a chance to grow as a parent. While perfection isn’t the aim, small adjustments can lead to lasting positive changes.
So, if you’re relocating, start incorporating these practices early—it’s a rewarding journey that will benefit your family for years to come.

Ah! this people almost make me see shege o! 😅 I know say all fingers no be the same, but one thing wey shock me when I got here naa how oyibo people take dey carry Christmas matter for head o! Growing up, one of the things that always gave me unexplainable joy was receiving fresh mint naira notes 😄!. Haa! You know those crisp, clean, fresh-out-of-the-CBN kind of money? The feeling was elite 😄!
I used to look forward to Christmas, not just for the rice and chicken, but for Iya Awolabi—our neighbor who had this tradition of going around the compound early in the morning, gifting mint naira notes to all the kids. The amount didn’t matter; even if it was 20 naira, I would be smiling like someone who just won a jackpot 🤣.

The real struggle, however, wasn’t collecting the mint notes—it was keeping them. I would guard those notes like say tomorrow no dey 😆 and vow to make sure they were the last money I spent, no matter what.
Spending mint notes felt like betrayal. Anytime I would buy something, I would dig deep into my pocket to fish out the oldest notes I could find, carefully leaving my mint notes untouched.

But the real heartbreak always came in buses. Imagine this: you’re seated, happy and minding your business, and then the conductor calls for fare. You check your wallet—no old notes. The only thing left is your precious mint naira note. Ahhh! 😭 I woud reluctantly hand it over, hoping for a miracle. But nooo, the conductor would give me change in those squeezed, crumpled dirty looking patch patch notes with cellotape hanging here and there holding them together! Haa 💔

I would argue, almost in tears “Oga, abeg, give me better change naa 🤣”
And he would reply with a straight face, “Na wetin I get be this. You fit collect am or leave am.”Ha 😁😁!

Chai 💔! this one dey pain no be small 🤣🤣.
My people who else who don experience this one while growing up abi naa only me all these bus conductors show shege for lagos🤣🤣

I get a lot of DMs daily from people interested in remote jobs.
Last time, I touched on Upwork, which I believe is the best platform for entrepreneurs to sell their services. If you haven’t registered yet, start there.

Next on my list is Fiverrdotcom. It’s similar to Upwork, but, as the name suggests, services here can be priced lower. However, this platform can still be a great opportunity to earn in dollars by offering almost any service, like growing pages, ghostwriting, logo design, interpreting, personal shopping, and more.

To stand out on these platforms, here’s what you need to do:

1, Create an Optimized Profile

Use a professional profile picture.

Write a catchy headline and a detailed description of your skills and services.

Highlight your experience and what makes you unique.

2, Showcase Your Portfolio

Add examples of your previous work (even personal projects if you’re just starting).

Make your portfolio visually appealing and easy to navigate.

3, Start with Competitive Pricing

Set reasonable prices at first to build a client base and earn good reviews. You can increase rates as you gain experience.

4, Use Strong Keywords

Research and include popular keywords related to your services to make your profile easier to find.

5, Write Customized Proposals

Don’t send generic pitches. Tailor each proposal to the client’s specific needs and demonstrate how you can help them.

6, Communicate Professionally

Respond promptly to messages and keep communication clear and friendly.

7, Deliver High-Quality Work

Always meet deadlines and exceed expectations to earn positive reviews and repeat clients.

8, Promote Your Profile

Share your Fiverr or Upwork profile on your social media platforms to attract more clients.

9, Focus on Niche Services

Specialize in a particular area (e.g., ghostwriting for eBooks or designing minimalist logos) to stand out in a crowded market.

10, Keep Learning and Improving

Stay updated with industry trends and upgrade your skills regularly to remain competitive.

This is real, so don’t underestimate yourself. Go to these platforms, see what others are doing, and create your profile.
Take that first step today—I’m rooting for you. Good luck!
