HOWNSGILL ENERGY CENTRE ONLINE COMMUNITY CONSULTATION

Plans to hold a Q&A session with members of the community have been confirmed, with an online discussion due to take place at 18:30 on Wednesday 30 June 2021. This will involve local Conservative Councillors (Delves Lane) Angela Sterling and Michelle Walton, as well as Mark Short (Hownsgill Energy Centre/Project Genesis Ltd), and participating members of the public.

Invitations to participate were offered to other community representatives and active social media opposition groups, and we understand that their questions have instead been forwarded to the Councillor representatives to raise. These will be discussed during the session, available online, with factually-correct information and insight being provided. Questions/answers that may require additional information or other third party expertise/comment will be made available thereafter via the website.

It has always been the intention of Hownsgill Energy Centre and Project Genesis Ltd to hold a public consultation event (originally in person, postponed due to Covid) as part of the overall planning process, and we therefore welcome this open and balanced conversation.

Hownsgill Energy Centre will see Consett at the forefront of low carbon, community-led power generation in the UK, significantly contributing to Durham County Council and UK government's net zero strategies and creating green jobs.

The Environment Agency has ‘no objections’ to plans put forward to develop HEC. After considering all evidence regarding the proposed facility, it stated they ‘have assessed the supporting information’ and can confirm they have ‘no objections to the planning application as submitted'.

FACT CHECK: online discussions regarding Hownsgill Energy Centre and claims that we have stated that The Environment Agency is 'endorsing' the facility are misleading and untrue.

What we have said is that The EA has confirmed that it has ‘no objections’ to plans put forward after considering all evidence regarding the proposed facility. The EA has assessed the supporting information as part of the planning process, and as a result, has stated that it has ‘no objections to the application as submitted.

These are two very different statements and scenarios.

Further to concerns regarding the local area/landscape and how Hownsgill Energy Centre will appear in situ, this is the view from Starbucks Consett (drawn to scale and based on proposed dimensions of the building) providing a very realistic impression of what will be visible from this location.

Hownsgill Energy Centre will be situated on an existing, active industrial estate, next to other operational factories/units - a location earmarked for future development by Durham County Council as a strategic employment site >> http://hownsgillenergycentre.co.uk

The UK is facing a very serious problem if we don't significantly reduce the levels of waste going into landfill, buried for many future generations. We cannot keep turning a blind eye to the amounts of non-recyclable non-hazardous waste materials produced on a local level keep going into landfill or exported to Europe when we have the very real opportunity to turn this into renewable energy, generating green heat and power for the local area.

Leaflets are being distributed this week to Consett residents providing detailed information regarding our plans (further information is also available on our website). We understand that there will be questions regarding the proposals put forward and we welcome this conversation in order to answer the untruths/rumours currently circulating.

Hownsgill Energy Centre will prevent more than 60,000 tonnes of local non-recyclable, NON_HAZARDOUS waste produced in the local community by the local community (eg shops, offices, factories, household skip hire etc) going into landfill both here and abroad. We cannot continue to turn a blind eye to the waste that we produce.

We have the opportunity now to create a facility for the future that will provide clean renewable heat and power for residents, as well as attract further investment and jobs for Consett. Hownsgill Energy Centre will meet very strict environmental regulations and criteria set out by The Environment Agency.

The UK government and Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy has announced a £166.5m funding package to decarbonise the UK’s most polluting sectors including waste.

Hownsgill Energy Centre will help prevent 60,000 tonnes of local commercial waste (produced in our own community by factories, manufacturers, shops etc), from going into landfill for generations to come, instead generating green renewable heat and power for Consett residents >> https://www.gov.uk/government/news/166-million-cash-injection-for-green-technology-and-60000-uk-jobs

Highly advanced technologies, processes and filtration systems will ensure that toxins are fully destroyed and immeasurable before reaching the top of the stack leaving only water vapour. Strict (maximum) particulate levels are set to meet regulations and environmental criteria - these levels will not be breached due to sensitive, real-time monitoring equipment being located in the stack.

Whilst some facilities take up to 250,000t of waste, the proposed Hownsgill Energy Centre will instead take a maximum of 60,000t per year helping to reduce (and prevent) the amount of local waste produced by the local area going straight into landfill for generations to come.

Instead it will use these materials to generate clean renewable heat and power for the local community. Significant investment will also upgrade and improve the capacity of the local grid infrastructure that is very much needed to cope with heightened demand (eg from EV car charging points etc).
