We are so excited to announce that tomorrow (6/7/24) at around 2:30pm we will have The Household Troops Band of the Salvation Army performing a short FREE concert on the front of the Pier! 🎶 🎺

They will be marching from Clacton-on-Sea Salvation Army at around 2:15pm before arriving at the Pier (although please note the march and performance tomorrow will be weather dependent).

They will also be performing a concert at the Salvation Army Hall tomorrow evening (tickets can be purchased through the Salvation Army).

We’re looking forward to welcoming you to the Pier for a music filled afternoon! 🏖️🎶🥁

Here is how it all started:

Although Hospital Radio Colchester was officially formed in December 1963, the catalyst for the service started many years before that when in early in 1957 a few members of the Colchester United supporters club decided to start broadcasting commentaries of Colchester United`s home games from Layer Road.

In the early 60`s the idea of supplementing the commentary with patient `s requests at half time was developed and resulted in a small group of enthusiasts from the supporters club, Colchester Community Fund and King Coel`s Kittens getting together with the goal of developing a dedicated Hospital Radio service.

So in December 1963 with a small amount of equipment set up in the supporter`s clubroom at Layer Road, Colchester`s Hospital Broadcasting Service was born. Dick Joyce of Anglia Television officially launched the service which broadcast to patients in Colchester and Black Notley Hospitals.

Colchester Hospital Radio are currently celebrating their 60 year anniversary and to celebrate they are going to be broadcasting for 60 continuous hours this weekend.

On this day in 1961, Elvis Presley started a 20-week run at No.1 on the US album chart with 'Blue Hawaii', his seventh US No.1 album.

Also on this day in 1971, UK comedian Benny Hill was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with the innuendo-laden novelty song, 'Ernie (The Fastest Milkman In The West)', giving Hill his only No.1 and the Christmas No.1 hit of 1971. The song was originally written in 1955 as the introduction to an unfilmed screenplay about Hill's milkman experiences.

On this day in 1993, Mr Blobby as featured on UK TV's 'The Noel Edmunds House Party', started a one-week run as the UK No.1 single with the novelty song 'Mr Blobby'. The single later received the dubious honour of being voted the most irritating Christmas No.1 single in a HMV poll.

On this day in 1994, Blur scored their first UK No.1 album with Parklife which went on to spend over two years on the chart. The album featured four UK hit singles: 'Girls & Boys', 'End of a Century', 'Parklife' and 'To the End'. In the year following its release the album came to define the emerging Britpop scene. The album cover for Parklife was among the ten chosen by the Royal Mail for a set of "Classic Album Cover" postage stamps issued in January 2010.

They will also be performing a warm up show at the Colchester Arts Centre on the 19th May, before 2 dates at Wembley Stadium over the summer!
