New release - Had the pleasure of filming a live session with Nicholas McDonald and his new band. All the audio was recorded 100% live and filmed on a single camera at the studio.
There's a nice series of clips being released this week via Hireaband Scotland and you'll be able to book the band through the agency.
Edinburgh based band The Kuil came in for Hireaband Scotland to record and film a couple of weeks ago. Here's the first video - A brilliant cover of Luke Combs "When it Rains it Pours".
I always enjoy recording a band that makes you smile, and these lads really have a happy joyfulness to their music.
Technical stuff is a bit different -
Vocals. - Sony C100 - 1176 - I predominately use a Neumann U87, however, the lead singer seemed suit the more modern sound of the Sony Pro, its the first time it's been used for a good couple of years.
Drums - All Audix mics, with a Neumann KMS as an over shoulder mic
Guitars/Bass - Using the Apogee DI - Direct out and re-amped with an Avalon pre.
Mixed in UA Luna - Hipsters arise! :P
Filmed on Sony A7sIII - Sony GM24mm - Batis 85mm
Latest from the studio, filming the amazing Crookysax new project, the Buckie Horns. Shot at the studio with the LED dance floor supplied by Led Dance Floors Glasgow - Those that know, will appreciate the challenge of thousands of uplighting LED's in a dark room 🤣
Smoking Jeffreys
Here's the final Smoking Jeffreys showreel video.
Recorded, mixed, filmed and edited completely in-house.
Monkey Man
First of 5 videos we recorded and filmed for Scottish band The Smoking Jeffries on behalf of Hireaband Scotland
Audio was recorded earlier in the year, and for a change I decided to use the large floor space in the studio to capture the band live using scrims to block off the instruments. Once the band was down we recorded the vocals, Neumann U87 into Apogee Symphony. I like this way of recording old school bands, there's an intangible vibe to the final result.
Filming was fairly straightforward, my usual technique of shooting in ProRes RAW on the Sony A7sIII on both the GM 24mm 1.4. and a (unusually) Zeiss Batis 85mm 1.8. All captured in the Atamos Ninja V and edited in FCPx
Butchery masterclass
I don't just record and film bands, occasionally one ventures into the wilds with camera in hand to do other wee things... Very run n gun for my local butcher's masterclass evening. Unlike the music stuff this was shot mostly on an 85mm Basis, and combating the flickery harsh shop lighting... Anyways, the steak here is pretty good... :p
Renegades
So, I've been trying to work out how to get 4k OBS screen captures as I fancy doing some production tutorials on the YouTube, and being a bit crap at all things streaming I've given up... There's only so many tutorials from Twitch gamers I can cope with...
So, here's a video I produced for the wonderful Renegades...
Here's some production notes :
Drums - My old 90's Pearl Masters maple 20" kick, 10,12,14" toms, all Audix mics. I use an XY overhead pattern, close mic on kick, single mic on edge of snare off axis, and I never mic the hats!!! Boo Hisss... #hatershate
Guitars - DI into Apogee Ensemble, duplicated, and Neural DSP Cory Wong on one side, and Scuffham amps on the other. One is dry, one is slightly moist....
Bass - DI - UA 1176, CLA Bass - more on bass's another time.
Vox - Neumann TLM 103 - Chain - UA1176 - LA2A - Some magic de-essing and EQ wizard-y!
Sax - Sony C100 Pro... more wizard-y
The mastering chain - AU Studer Tape - Slate FG-MU - Eiossis Air EQ (x2) - Slate FX-g II
Filming - 12bit Pro Res Raw - Sony BB Lut, lil dash of Schiffer Vintage look 2 - Aputure lights....
I'm dead fun at parties....

A wee clip from a recent video only shoot with David Mckellar Covers Music The full videos will be out soon over Hireaband Scotland
I never edit to black and white, but this tune kinda suits it. David absolutely kills this! Great cover!
Maybe Tomorrow
Had a nice wee video only session today at the studio with the very bloody talanted David Mckellar Covers Music for Hireaband Scotland. Tried to utilise the live room space and create an isolated feel with use of cold floor cans... Full thing out soon! 😁
Nothing here is Real
Long but really lovely day recording with my awesome pal John McIntyre, please check him out!
During a break, I asked John to sing me something live for a wee video, and we filmed a couple of tunes. 100% live, vocals are through my talkback mic!
This is an original track called "Nothing here is real" :
Guitar is my Martin OM28.
