Connell Guides

Connell Guides Clear,concise,compelling! The world's best and most intelligent literary companions and all you need to know about literature in one concise volume.

Check us out at www.connellguides.com Connell Guides are more than just guides to reading the great works of literature, they are great reads themsleves – scholarly, yet approachable and entertaining. Each book brings to life a single work of literature and provides an intelligent, illuminating discussion by an academic or a critic at the very top of his or her field, writers with passion and some

thing to say. They put forward, clearly and concisely (but without losing any subtlety of thought), an authoritative and compelling interpretation of what a work is about; what it tells us about the world and human nature, and why it has endured. They are concerned with real education.

The one date that every UK school child has drummed into their brain...the year William the Conqueror beat Harold Godwinson at the battle of Hastings...956 years ago to this day - the 14th October 1066.

Roald Dahl reckons that's a pretty useless fact, but if you are interested in how French Wills got his namesake take a look at our Anglo-Norman England Guide. It covers everything from the Anglo-Saxons and the Norman Conquest, to the reigns of King Stephen and Henry II, plus a bit of Thomas Becket - yipee!

Amazing graduate opportunity……

08/12/2021

Connell Guides is looking for a clever, creative editor who will also take charge of the marketing.

Connell Guides is a well-established brand, and now has more than 80 titles. Added to this is our All you need to know series, with 12 titles, covering everything from World War Two to the Prophet Muhammed. Top academics, actors and authors, from William Boyd to Helena Bonham Carter, have endorsed our guides. Many have done videos for us, some of which are on YouTube.

The Guides cover English and History and are immensely popular in schools and among students who want to achieve good grades in their GSE and A levels.

The business as started 10 years ago by Jon Connell, the founder of The Week and MoneyWeek, and has its main office near Chippenham in Wilts. But we are happy to consider candidates from further afield.

This is potentially a very exciting role for an enthusiastic, energetic graduate keen to make their mark and turn a flourishing small business into a larger one. You need to combine a love of English and history with an understanding of the kind of help students need to shine in their subjects. You need to be computer savvy, able to shape and put up material on our website. And you need to be adept at using social media.

Connell Guides is at an interesting point and needs to pivot more away from book publishing and more towards online content. We need someone who has the vision and energy to accomplish that. We already have a small team which can help, and Jon Connell himself will be on hand to advise and assist with the writing, doing blog posts etc.

This is a business in a very interesting area which has the capacity to become much bigger. Working hours, pay and conditions all open for discussion. Please contact us via email.

National Poetry Day 7 October 2021

“Shall I Compare Thee To A Summer’s Day?” by William Shakespeare
Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate.
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer’s lease hath all too short a date.
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimmed;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance, or nature’s changing course, untrimmed;
But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st,
Nor shall death brag thou wand’rest in his shade,
When in eternal lines to Time thou grow’st.
So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

On this day in 1613 the Globe Theatre burnt down during a performance of Henry VIII. A cannon was fired but instead of using a cannon ball they used gunpowder held down by wadding. A piece of the burning wadding set fire to the thatch.

Continuing on our MONTH OF POETRY....

"Shakespeare and Milton were the greatest sons of their country" said G.K.Chesterton, "but Chaucer was the father of his country". The Canterbury Tales have sometimes been thought dry, even intimidating, of little relevance to the modern world. Nothing could be further from the truth, argues the distinguished literary critic Stephen Fender. Wise, moving, whimsical, funny, b***y and vivid in the extraordinary picture they paint of medieval England. The Canterbury Tales also explore themes which have preoccupied us for hundreds of years, such as the conflict between fate and free will, the gap between rhetoric and truth and the extent to which we can trust any authority.
It is no wonder, perhaps, that The Canterbury Tales have come to be seen as a founding statement of English national identity.

NATIONAL POETRY MONTH

Milton's Paradise Lost has long been acknowledged as one of the greatest literary works in the English language. Yet while many readers have been carried away by Milton's sublimity, others have been daunted by his grandeur, scope and learning.
In this brilliantly concise and scholarly book, Caroline Moore shows what makes Milton's verse so extraordinarily powerful and why many critics have misunderstood him. Paradise Lost, Moore argues, is the most profound study ever undertaken of the human act of choice. No other English poet - not even Shakespeare - has ever stared so long and hard into the abyss "between the acting of a dreadful thing / And the first motion"; no other poet has shown quite so vividly the dark byways and infinite strangeness of the human heart.
