My somewhat formal obituary of Richard Woodman is published on line in the Guardian today. They wanted an appreciation of his writing, which I was glad to offer. There wasn't room for all the little things -- the advice he gave me when I was flinching at the responsibility of taking on Peter Duck; the fact-checking he did for the Salt-Stained book, the encouragement he gave to publish The Cruise of Naromis, the generous afterword he wrote for Maid Matelot, remembering his friend Rozelle Raynes. Above all it was the prompt email answers to questions and the interested, expert conversations that I shall really miss. I never gave those conversations enough time -- and now I never shall. Here's the obit anyway

WE're hoping that individuals who would like to encourage young people sailing will make a donation (£10 suggested) and send a message of support which will will print in the souvenir programme

I've long admired Susan Price's unique, evocative Ghost Drum and am delighted that it's getting this re-recognition. If one can call a book 'timeless' without cliche, this is timeless. The rhythm of its language and quality of imagination is quite unique (except possibly in other areas of Susan Price's work) and like other great children's books it is NOT age-limited.

We're sponsoring this World Championship event by producing a souvenir programme for competitors to take home with them and remember the year that they came to sail in Plymouth. We hope other people and organisations will put small amounts of money towards this and sent messages of support to the young sailors which will be printed in the programme. As I struggle to peep over the corner of this large cheque I am actually feeling rather pleased at the success of the short film We Fought Them in Gunboats in raising funds for this worthwhile charity (book sales at the event raised an additional £200 for SSAFA). Thanks to all River Deben Association friends who attended.
Last week was the first showing of the film in a small venue -- Deben Yacht Club in Woodbridge where money was raised for GBR Cadets Next it goes to Ipswich Maritime Trust (Feb7) and Aldeburgh Literary Festival Aldeburgh Bookshop (March 3) so continues to be a really interesting project.
