FESTIVE FACT OF THE DAY: Did You Know?...... “Driving Home For Christmas” is a song can’t resist singing along to but it was written a good few years before it was recorded. When Chris Rea had to get home one festive season from Abbey Road studios to Middlesbrough in the ‘70s, his wife picked him up in her Austin Mini during the snow and as they were going the traffic he couldn’t help look at other drivers at how miserable they seemed and jokingly sang “I’m driving home for Christmas...” when they stopped by streetlights, he’d scribble down more lyrics. It was originally recorded in 1986 but re-recorded in 1988. According to Chris Rea, It was never performed live until 2014. Our thoughts are with his family and friends on his recent passing.

FESTIVE FACT OF THE DAY: Did You Know?...... “Mary’s Boy Child” was originally a hit for Harry Belafonte in 1956. It was written by Jester Hairston who was asked to write a song with a calypso rhythm for a friend’s birthday and called it “He Pone and Chocolate Tea.”
Some time later, he was asked to write a Christmas song and remembered that same song but changed the lyrics. The most notable cover version of it is that which was performed by German-based pop group, Boney M in 1978! The song reached the top of the festive charts on both occasions and is still a classic today.

FACT OF THE DAY: Did You Know?...... for over six decades, the classic Christmas favourite, “I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday” performed by Wizzard has always been a must at Christmas parties and featured on countless playlists over the festive season, but even though it’s still as popular as ever, it’s never reached higher than Number 4 since it was released in 1973. Beaten to that years Christmas Number One by Slade’s “Merry Xmas Everybody,” It was written by Roy Wood and recorded in August so to make it feel more Christmassy, the engineer in the studio turned the air conditioning down to the lowest setting and decorated it with decorations. The woolly hat you see Roy wearing in the video was actually found in “lost property.” We’re sure you’ll be playing the catchy hit this year.

FESTIVE FACT OF THE DAY: Did You Know?..... It’s the staple of any Christmas party and is said to have started the trend of the race for the top spot of the festive season. “Merry Xmas Everybody” was Slade’s final Number one and was written by the band’s frontman, Noddy Holder at the peak of their career of his desire to record a Christmas-themed song. It was based on the melody of a discarded song from the late ‘60s the band wrote and Noddy finished the lyrics in the first draft. It was the Christmas Number One for 1973 and beat Wizzard and their Yuletide song to the top of the charts! It was a “single only” release and as well as being used many Christmas compilations and parties, it’s also featured in 6 “Doctor Who” specials as well as being voted the nation’s third favourite Christmas song.

FESTIVE FACT OF THE DAY: Did You Know?...... Cliff Richard took the coveted Christmas top spot once again in 1990, but it was a surprise to some as the previous few weeks saw Vanilla Ice at Number One with the ever popular “Ice Ice Baby,” which was still a big hit, but not big enough when the week before Christmas saw Cliff’s single, “Saviour’s Day,” leap from Number three and overtake it.
The festive chart-topper was written by Chris Eaton, who brought the demo tape to meet Cliff Richard at a Christmas party but was told that Cliff already had songs lined up for that year. When they met, he insisted Cliff listen to it and when he did, he said he knew it was a hit and so he was right! The video was shot in Dover.
