We’d like to highlight a recent article based on the Let’s Fix It in Post Report by the TV Industry Human Rights Forum, exposing “illegal or barely legal” conditions in UK post-production.

The report cites low pay, excessive workloads, and no warnings before distressing scenes, worsened by a commissioning slowdown, job cuts, and insecurity.

Findings from Bectu Cymru, CULT Cymru, and CEN’s recent survey reinforce these issues, and we continue to campaign for better conditions.

Please find the links to both the article and report below

In the past 12 months, CULT Cymru, Bectu Cymru, and its Freelance Committee have:

- Rebooted bi-monthly meetings for direct engagement with members and officials.
- Conducted surveys to support Bectu's initiatives, to support the Wellbeing Facilitators programme.
- Completed a recruitment survey and brief for Creative Wales, providing insights into the freelancer experience.

Unfair pay, unequal opportunities, and harassment will persist if we rely on individualism and without unity. Real progress requires workers and unions standing together—including you.

The Bectu Cymru South Wales Freelance Committee is seeking new members. If you're passionate about change, get in touch.

Through collective action, we can build a fairer industry in 2025 and beyond. The power to make a difference starts with you.

Exceptional Minds is a resource designed to promote greater awareness, understanding, and acceptance of neurodivergence within the creative industries.

Their newly launched toolkit includes a detailed guidebook and an interactive website, specifically created for businesses, organisations, and employers in the creative sector. It offers practical guidance to help build more neuro-inclusive workplaces and foster supportive practices for teams, employees, colleagues, crew, and freelancers.

This initiative is informed by the lived experiences of hundreds of neurodivergent creatives and the needs of numerous media businesses. The project aims to create a more inclusive and equitable creative industry for individuals who think, process, and view the world differently.

With the recent research from SUSST shedding light on the potential neglect of local talent and facilities, a topic further amplified by an article from Deadline. ‘The Traitors’: BBC & Studio Lambert Accused Of Being Misleading About Hit Show’s Scottish Roots'

We want to draw attention to this issue, as we've encountered numerous instances of exploitation within Wales, where Welsh-based talent and facilities have been overlooked.

If you have experienced similar situations, we encourage you to reach out to Bectu Cymru.

We want to highlight the ongoing investigations by SUSST (Speaking Up for Scotland Screen Talent) into hiring practices in Scotland.

A recent insight reveals that for the currently airing hit show The Traitors Series 3, "only 4.17% of above-the-line roles are filled by off-screen talent based in Scotland. Removing the Glasgow-based Executive Producer (BBC), the % of above-the-line roles would be zero. Only 6.42% of below-the-line roles are Scotland-based."

We applaud SUSST's efforts in advocating for local talent and pushing for meaningful change to achieve equity of opportunity.

We’d like to draw attention to a recent BBC Wales News article that highlights the ongoing crisis within our industry here in Wales.

Freelancers interviewed shared their struggles, with some barely holding on and others having left the industry entirely. They described the situation with statements like, “Unless you’re an A-list Hollywood composer, you’re struggling,” and expressed feelings of “grieving” for the careers they’ve lost.

Despite the success of Christmas TV shows like Gavin and Stacey, the union Bectu Cymru said half of freelancers were out of work as broadcasters grappled with tighter budgets and falling advertising revenue.
