We’d like to draw attention to a recent BBC Wales News article that highlights the ongoing crisis within our industry here in Wales.

Freelancers interviewed shared their struggles, with some barely holding on and others having left the industry entirely. They described the situation with statements like, “Unless you’re an A-list Hollywood composer, you’re struggling,” and expressed feelings of “grieving” for the careers they’ve lost.

Despite the success of Christmas TV shows like Gavin and Stacey, the union Bectu Cymru said half of freelancers were out of work as broadcasters grappled with tighter budgets and falling advertising revenue.

The Creative Industries Independent Standards Authority (CIISA) is launching an industry-wide consultation on The CIISA Standards—a comprehensive set of expectations designed to establish the minimum standards of behaviour across the UK’s creative industries. These standards aim to create safe, inclusive, and respectful workplaces by addressing all forms of bullying and harassment, including those of a discriminatory nature.

The CIISA Standards provide a unified framework that defines professional conduct and outlines what a safe, inclusive workplace—where individuals are treated with dignity—should look like. The framework is adaptable to organisations, productions, and projects of all sizes.

CIISA is calling on creative industry professionals to participate in the consultation process. Your input is essential in shaping these standards. Every survey completed provides more factual evidence and data, strengthening the case for meaningful change.
