’The Stolen Mountain’ is a moving meditation on a young woman’s struggle to come to terms with the upheaval and devastation visited on her childhood village by the arrival of a mining company. Deepti Mary Minj’s protagonist returns to the village from the city where she has been working as a maid, and weaves past and present together to form an affective tapestry of love and loss. Idyllic memories of goat-herding up the mountain’s untainted faces as a child mix with auguries of trepidation for the village’s future. Deepti’s must-read short story will be available to read in the upcoming issue of The Cavendish Chronicle, out tomorrow!
Pick up your copy at our launch event at the Maypole (Friday, May 13 at 6pm) or keep your eyes peeled around college! We're also releasing a digital version this Saturday on the magazine's website: https://thecavendishchronicle.uk/

The theme of our upcoming issue is Transitions. Some transitions occur naturally like the decay of an apple or the passage from winter to spring, illuminated by the blossoming of primrose. Whereas others are being fought for with blood, tears and sometimes even lives. Oscar Sharples's powerful illustration captures the fight for political transitions around the world. Want to see more thought-provoking illustrations? Wait for the launch of the magazine on the 13th of May.

Get excited for the 2021/2022 issue of the Cavendish Chronicle, which is to be released on the 13th of May 2022! This year presents an impressive array of beautiful, thought-provoking, and insightful work by our talented college community.

The upcoming issue will feature, among others, articles about the long road to medical gender transition in the UK; the ways that some disabled people embrace the ‘disability’ label as a way of self-care; Orwell, his roses, and the politics of pleasure; and the mesmerising memoir of Russian-born Sophia Fjuss. And as always, the chronicle will pay tribute to the creative vein that runs through Lucy Cavendish College by featuring alluring poems and captivating short stories that comment on deforestation in India, the transitions between cultural forms across human history, Heraclitean flux within the natural world, and so much more.

The submissions deadline for the Easter edition of the Cavendish Chronicle is just around the corner on March 1st! Send your submissions (max 1,250 words) or, if you’re unsure, a pitch, as well as any other queries, to [email protected]

Below are some prompts to get you thinking about how you might want to respond to the theme of the edition, ‘Transitions’:

‱ Have you recently experienced a transition in political, or perhaps religious belief? Do you want to tell us about that experience, and what provoked the change?

‱ Have you undergone a change in your body? Or perhaps you have reached a sense of peace with your body, and want to inspire others? Perhaps you have realised your body is suddenly able to run a marathon or dance etc. Perhaps you are confronted by your first wrinkle, you are experiencing adult acne, or you have stopped shaving your body hair for political reasons.

‱ Are you an alumnus and have you currently transitioned into the professional world after university? Do you want to tell your story?

‱ What do you think of Lucy’s transition from a female, mature college to a co-ed, all ages college?

‱ Have you painted a picture or taken a photograph that captures the transition from childhood to adulthood? Or perhaps illustrates political change, like Brexit?

‱ Think of an artist whose work means a lot to you. Can you identify a noticeable transition in style or content between their early and late work?

‱ Have fun experimenting with a poem's form. How could you play around with its formal transitional qualities (stanza and line breaks, enjambment, caesura) to augment the poem's meaning?
