Last week we emailed our community of healthcare professionals and asked "what stops you leaving work at work?". We received HUNDREDS of responses.

And they were eye-opening.

'I worry about the volume of work and the responsibility to get it all done without errors.'
'I'm reanalysing the day - worrying about patients, mistakes, how I'll manage tomorrow's caseload.'
'Fear that I haven't done enough, let someone down, or upset someone.'

A clear pattern emerged.

It's not just about the workload (though that's overwhelming enough).

It's about the weight of responsibility you're carrying - for patients, for your team, for the whole system.

That's why conventional advice about 'switching off' or 'setting boundaries' falls flat. How do you switch off when you're responsible for so much?

In my new free video series, we're exploring:

1. The responsibility trap that's keeping you stuck
2. Why caring doesn't have to mean carrying
3. How to lead sustainably through NHS pressures

If you're:

• A clinical lead drowning in others' problems
• A GP partner who can't remember their last proper break
• An operational manager trying to hold it all together
• Any healthcare leader who's exhausted from carrying too much

Then this series is for you. Part 2 comes out tomorrow - if you're not already watching, sign up here: https://www.shapestoolkit.com/overwhelm-cycle

3-part mini video exploring how leaders and managers find themselves stuck in the overwhelm cycle - and a different way to protect your time and energy, and get more done.

'I wake up at 3am worrying about the patients I might have missed.'

'The workload follows me home because I know if I don't do it, no-one else will.'

'I lie awake thinking about my team - who might leave next?'

In our recent survey of healthcare leaders, 31.7% reported losing sleep over their workload, while another 22% lay awake worrying about potential mistakes.

This isn't about time management or resilience. Healthcare leaders are caught in a cycle of over-responsibility that goes far beyond their actual workload.

In our brand new video series 'Escape the Overwhelm Cycle', we're talking about:

1. The responsibility trap that's keeping you stuck

2. Why caring doesn't have to mean carrying

3. How to lead sustainably through NHS pressures

The series is free and the first video is available now!

NEW PODCAST: How To Overcome The Toxic Effects Of Shame On Your Team

We’re kicking off the year with a powerful discussion around shame and how that shows up for healthcare professionals. In the words of my guest, “You can't eradicate shame. That's not possible. But you can certainly minimize it.”

https://youarenotafrog.com/episodes/252/

Listen to this episode to identify what shame looks like for you, and learn how to recognize when shame might be a reason for the difficult or challenging behavior in those around you - so you can create safer environments where we can all learn and perform at our best.

The more senior you are, the higher the risk of you shaming other people - so this is especially relevant if you’re a leader, manager or mentor and want to ensure you bring out the best in people.

What do you think – have you noticed, or experienced, the toxic effects of shame at work? Leave a comment, let me know!

Have you heard of the term “intangible assets”? In The 100 Year Life, Lynda Gratton and Andrew J Scott describe 3 types:

#1 - Productive assets: Things like your skills and your knowledge, um, that you use and need to do your job.

#2 - Vitality assets: Your wellbeing, your physical and mental health, your social connections, and your connections with your family.

#3 Transformational assets: Your knowledge and understanding of yourself, but also an outward focus on looking out and thinking - what else could I do?

This third group are absolutely key to a multi-stage career.

As medics, we often feel expected to simply follow a predetermined path when it comes to our careers. (Best comment on a recent episode about preventing burnout in the earliest stages >> “catch yourself when making A level choices!!”)

But what if your career path - and your happiness - isn’t something you locked in back at the start of your working life?

This week's podcast with Dr. Lois Brand explores a crucial truth: Your career development is in your hands. We discuss:

📍Why proactive career planning is a skill all of us need these days
📍Managing rapid changes in medical practice and in our lives

NEW PODCAST: How to catch stress early before you spiral into burnout

It’s easy to think stress is a normal part of life, especially if you work in healthcare. But this way of thinking actually puts you at risk of burnout. You end up tolerating long-term distress and ignoring the early warning signs.

And the closer you get to burnout, the harder it is to recover and return to optimal performance.

Find out what signs to look out for, and how to know exactly what to do, in today’s episode: https://youarenotafrog.com/episodes/249/
