As medics, we often feel expected to simply follow a predetermined path when it comes to our careers. (Best comment on a recent episode about preventing burnout in the earliest stages >> “catch yourself when making A level choices!!”)
But what if your career path - and your happiness - isn’t something you locked in back at the start of your working life?
This week's podcast with Dr. Lois Brand explores a crucial truth: Your career development is in your hands. We discuss:
📍Why proactive career planning is a skill all of us need these days
📍Managing rapid changes in medical practice and in our lives
📍Strategies for professional growth beyond traditional routes

I’ve been working on a new theory about burnout, and the way it progresses from “just stressed out” to “fully burned out”. Based on my experience, and others I’ve spoken to, burnout isn’t a straightforward, linear process.
You can keep going for ages - and then it all spirals very quickly.
In this week’s podcast episode I explore what tiny warning signs we often ignore and how we can address stress at the right point - before our performance is impacted or, worse still, we head into burnout.
Have you burned out before? Looking back, what do you now realise were your warning signs?

Frankly, changes that you KNOW will make a really positive difference to your life can often feel like a bit of a chore.
Go to bed earlier (but what about the next episode of that brilliant new series?)
Cut down on drinking (will one glass of wine with a mate be so bad?)
Do more exercise (after a full day of work - come on!)
So how can you start to shift your habits without sucking all the fun out of life?
On this week’s podcast, Dr Hussain Al-Zubaidi shares his incredible journey from a scary diagnosis to a fit and well movement enthusiast - and how you can make the changes you know you need to make feel irresistible.

On a day when lots of the focus is on spending - some really wise words from my guest on the podcast this week, Dr Hussain Al-Zubaidi.
Sometimes, the thing that would *really* change your life isn’t a fancy new piece of kit or an expensive upgrade. It might be something as simple as getting a bit more sleep every night, saying no to something you don’t want to do, or changing a boundary around a draining relationship.

This week on the podcast I shared the vulnerable truth about how I felt when I stopped practising medicine 🙈
I’m sharing this in case you’re also giving yourself a hard time about a decision you’ve made in the past. Feeling shame about a “mistake” or regretting a path you took.
Now I’m learning a FAR more helpful approach to making decisions. One which doesn’t break things into “right” or “wrong” - but acknowledges the messy, imperfect business of being human, and allows me to figure out what works along the way.
Let me know if this helps you too.

Who knew a “handbag” metaphor could be such a useful way to set boundaries and stop us taking on everyone’s issues when we’re at work?
The emotional demands of working in healthcare can feel overwhelming, leading to burnout if you don't have healthy outlets. But as this week's "You Are Not a Frog" guest, Dr. Tara George, explained - the antidote may lie in the power of stories.
Engaging with literature, poetry, and memoirs can actually help providers find refuge in our shared humanity. These narratives offer a safe space to process emotions, enhance self-awareness, and ultimately achieve greater personal wellness and resilience.

What stories do we tell our patients - and ourselves - and how consciously do we choose those narratives?
This week on the podcast I talked to Dr Tara George about how stories can help us support our patients but also steer ourselves away from burnout and into a healthier relationship with our emotions.

When things start to feel like too much, and you know you’re getting overwhelmed (and maybe even a little burned out…) - what do you do?
For YEARS my response would be:
Get practical.
Write it all down, break things into chunks, prioritise the most important things… you know the drill.
That all changed recently when I had a brush with overwhelm that let to a BIG realization.
Hear my story here: https://youtu.be/gQqEB4bO3Cc
I’ll be honest - when I do this, I KNOW I’m starting to get overwhelmed and probably not making the best decisions!
This week on the podcast I talked to Dr Claire Plumbly about making decisions when you’re in a high-stakes role - and her advice was brilliant.
What are your “red flags” that tell you you’re probably not making the most sensible decisions?
