Yes we do!
Social groups.
Not social skills groups.
Not for practicing neurotypical skills.
Not for suppressing neurodivergent traits.
Just freedom to be authentically autistic with others who get you.
Interest-based.
Not data-driven.
No judgement, no masking.
Just authentic joy.
Let’s make it happen.

This is a new (paid) opportunity for neurodivergent young people and young carers (aged 14-18, or up to 25 for those who are disabled or have an additional educational need) who will be supported to design and lead their own research project relating to young people’s mental health.
In Our Own Words takes a peer-led approach, training young people with lived experiences to conduct research about other young people in their community. The projects will focus on understanding the experiences and perceptions of mental health, wellbeing and the associated services for young people in Surrey.
Taking place March-October 2024, youth researchers will be taught social research skills, receiving professional training from Surrey University. They will choose a topic that interests them, design and lead research projects and share their findings across the council and organisations across Surrey to influence change and shape future service development.
No previous knowledge is required – just a desire to share the experiences of young people in Surrey. The webpage is https://www.surreycc.gov.uk/youthresearchers. Here young people can find information about the project and the roles available, Q+As as well as the application form.
The project is a collaboration between Surrey County Council’s User Voice & Participation Team, MindWorks Surrey, Surrey Youth Focus, Surrey University and Healthwatch. A young person/their parent/carer will need to complete a short application form. The deadline for applications is Tuesday 5th March at 6pm.
If you’d like to find out more information or need any further accessibility adjustments for a young person you support, please contact Lucy from the User Voice and Participation team: [email protected]

‘But they don’t play like ‘normal’ children!’
Parallel play is very common in the autistic community. There are less demands, no eye contact and you can control your own play while being near and connected to someone else.
Some autistic adults STILL prefer parallel play!
At Koala you’ll never be forced into participating in an activity. You do what YOU want to do in YOUR own time. That applies to all of our community, whether you’re 2 or 82.

Just reading the amazing book by Steph's Two Girls. If you have or suspect PDA in your family, this is a must-read (please forgive the demand).
I understand Sasha is a self-taught creative media wizz, so Steph if you are reading this you guys maybe interested in our alternative provision? 🙌
Wow, what a day! Our PDA in the Family book has well and truly launched, and has reached the giddy heights of number 272 on the whole of the Amazon UK book chart! I keep smiling at the thought of all the PDA awareness and understanding that can hopefully spread from this.
Thank you all so much for your lovely comments, messages of support and for sending photos of your book deliveries! It's all been pretty overwhelming and I might need to go and lie down in a dark room and listen to some Take That 😄
First I wanted to say (whilst trying not to be too OTT and effusive) a huge thank you to Julia Daunt - memyselfandpda.com who wrote the foreword for our book. I feel so honoured and thrilled. I met Julia and her partner Paul for the first time many years ago, at a conference all about Pathological Demand Avoidance, and I admired how open and honest she was about the challenges she faced in life. Her book, Being Julia, is amazing - I've reviewed that on my blog. I definitely recommend listening to PDAers insights and experiences, I've learned so much from them.
I hope Julia won't mind if I repeat some of her words here (these are the ones on the image):
"I believe that this book is a must-read for anyone with a connection to PDA: parents; carers and those working with families. It will have you nodding, crying, laughing and raising a glass to Sasha’s delightful independence!"
