The 2022 Participatory Budgeting Programme takes place in February.
A wide range of charities and voluntary organisations are taking part. This is the chance for Newport residents to have a say on who gets funds from our programme.
Newport City Council will hold six decision events where you can decide which community projects and groups are most important to you.
Have your say on who gets funds from our participatory budgeting programme.

British Cycling can today announce that the 2022 HSBC UK | National Track Championships will be held in the Geraint Thomas National Velodrome of Wales, in Newport, from 28-30 January 2022.
The 2022 event will be the first to take place outside of Manchester since 1994, with Britain’s top riders battling it out for the coveted red, white and blue national champions’ jerseys.

Ringland Neighbourhood Hub (Community East Hub) is the first fully functional premises of four hubs that in future will serve the North, South, East and West of Newport. This Hub completed just before the pandemic will operate a walk in Vaccination on 6 August between, 9am and 5pm.

No appointment is required and anyone over the age of 18 will be able to get their 1st vaccination dose. Both Astra Zeneca and Pfizer vaccinations will be available.

You will need identification documents (British or other) and proof of address if not stated on your ID (e.g. a utility bill).

Support is available to anyone who may have issues in providing such documentation.

Dear supporter,
I am writing to make you aware of our fundraising appeal. Our breast service in Aneurin Bevan is one of the busiest in Wales, seeing over 5000 patients a year with around 500 cancers being detected each year.
After a year like no other we will be working with schools, town’s businesses individuals and groups to make the ABUHB borough areas Pink on the 8th October this year.
Will you take part? We are less than 20,000 pounds from our target. You could make all the difference to local people.
Aneurin Bevan Health Board are at the forefront of delivering ground breaking progress in the diagnosis and treatment of Breast Cancer, and are currently building a dedicated New Breast Unit. To make this breast unit the best it can be we are aiming to raise funds to improve the services to breast cancer patients attending the unit.
We want all Service providers in the area to be part of our efforts and would ask whether you would consider supporting our vital charity in 2021. This will allow us to provide an improved holistic service for patients, and will complement the existing good work and innovation of the Breast Service team.
Any fundraising activity you do will help us to fund the best possible environment for local people ‘through the emotional and traumatic times surrounding diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.’ And help build a centre of excellence for local patients.

If your child was born between 1 September 2018 to 31 August 2019, they are eligible for a 2022 place.

Admission to community nursery schools and classes is offered for a half-day session, either morning or afternoon, five days a week. Schools expect pupils attending the nursery to take up all the sessions available to them.

This headstone in Block 3 of the cemetery simply reads:

SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF

BELOVED WIFE OF
CHARLES L. CORNICK
WHO PASSED AWAY
JANUARY 11TH 1909
AGED 24 YEARS.
“FATHER IN THY GRACIOUS KEEPING
LEAVE WE NOW THIS SERVANT SLEEPING.”
ALSO
CHARLES L. CORNICK
HUSBAND OF THE ABOVE
DIED MARCH 19TH 1915
AGED 35 YEARS
“THY WILL BE DONE.”

Ida is recorded in the cemetery burial registers as being buried on the 14 January 1909, of 21 Ebenezer Terrace, Newport, aged only 24.

But, interestingly, Charles, although appearing on the headstone, is not recorded as being buried in the cemetery. It seemed a bit of research was in order to find out why not.

Ida (née Hicks) was born in 1884 in Cornwall. She married Charles Lesley Cornick in 1908 in Portskewett. She died on the 11 January 1909, according to her death certificate, at 21 Ebenezer Terrace, Newport, from complications arising from pregnancy at the tragically young age of 24.

On their marriage certificate Charles is shown as a ship’s steward (as was his father). He entered Tredegar Wharf school in Newport on 22 November 1886, where his birth is shown as 6 February 1880 and his parent/guardian is shown as Martha Cornick, of 41 Williams Street, Newport. He left there on 17 February 1893 where the entry says “Gone to work”. Whether directly or later, he obviously became a ship’s steward.

Further research uncovered the following shipping entry:

Cornick, Charles Leslie. 35. Steward. Newport, Mon. 66, Williams Street. Ship: “Etton”. Port of Registry: Hull. Nett tonnage: 1,795. Date: 19 March 1915. Off Longships. Missing.

A listing of “Deaths at Sea, reported to the Registrar-General of Shipping and Seamen under the Provisions of the Merchant Shipping Act, 1894” for the month of May, 1915, lists:
Ship “Etton”. Off. No.: 121015. Date of death: 19/03/1915. Place of death: Off Longships. Male. 35. Steward. Of 66 Williams Street, Newport, Mon. Missing, suspect su***de. (Longships is a group of rocky islands off Land’s End.)

So we may never know definitely whether he took his own life or not but maybe he never really got over the loss of his young wife and their unborn child six years earlier.

No doubt one of very many sad stories behind the headstones in St Woolos cemetery.

Our North Hub have organised a litter pick in Shaftesbury from 1pm until 2pm on 04 June This event, in partnership with Keep Wales Tidy, will provide the opportunity to meet the Hub Team as well as do your bit to make Shaftesbury a safer and cleaner place for all to enjoy. FLORENCE JOHNSTONE, MUNITIONETTE. (CON D.12.158)

Florence Valentine Johnstone was one of eight children and was born in Newport in 1893, not long after her parents had moved down from Scotland. When war broke out her older brother John joined the 2nd Battalion, Welsh Regiment. He lost his life in the closing stages of the Battle of Loos on 2nd October 1915. He has no known grave and he is remembered on the Loos memorial in Dud Corner Cemetery, together with 20,500 others.

In 1914 the British Army had not fully appreciated how important the role artillery was going to be and by 1915 there was a serious shortage of shells. The government responded by passing The Munitions of War Act 1915, which meant that they had a closer oversight of what was going on, and a new Ministry of Munitions, was established. This new Act encouraged the employment of women in the factories thus freeing up men to go to the front. By June 1917 80% of weapons and munitions were being produced by women, a workforce of which was to rise to 950,000. These women became known as either the “Munitionettes” or if they worked in the factories packing the shells with explosives as “Canaries” (due to the high levels of sulphur they were exposed to).
Florence responded to the call and moved to Coventry in 1916 where around 30,000 men, women and children were employed in the Ordnance Factory. In January 1918 she was promoted to a Charge Hand but on 5th February, whilst working on a fuse, it exploded causing terrible injuries and killing her instantly. No official records were kept of the number of deaths or injuries caused to women or men whilst working in the factories but they must have been numerous. In one-instance in December 1915, 35 women were killed in Leeds.

Unlike those service personnel who lost their lives whilst serving the country the munitions workers seem to have been almost forgotten, no official records and very few memorials exist to remind us of their valuable work. Not only did they play an important wartime role they paved the way for greater emancipation for women, they were proving that anything men could do on the factory floor, they could match them.

In response to the COVID-19 crisis, Newport City Council developed a Community Impact Assessment (CIA) to identify the communities and groups that had been worst affected by the pandemic, and better understand the nature of these impacts. One outcome was the Participatory Budgeting project. A fund of over £400k was presented and over 80 organisations applied. The graphic below shows how successful it was. Newport City Council are currently working on phase two.

As part of this, in the 21/22 budget, your Labour council allocated an additional £5m of funding for schools in our city.

Over the last 3 years, excluding any increases in Welsh Government specific grants, which have also grown over the last few years, your Newport Labour Council has increased schools core funding by some £15m, an annual increase of around 5% average.
