“My practice is deeply rooted in the exploration of memory and identity. Growing up in Miami after being displaced from my hometown of New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina was a culture shock for me. This longing for home has never left my side, so I began painting my childhood reminisces, recreating what felt necessary to start my next body of work focusing on Miami landscapes.

I’ve lived most of my life in Miami, and embracing that within my work is very important to me. I’ve always been drawn to the vibrant colors, light, and forms that shape this city. I utilize that as a vehicle for personal reflection within my work. I experiment with the tension between abstraction and realism, focusing on those subtle intersections where the physical world meets personal experience.”

This work recently featured in our Private Life group show in London. See below to understand more about Gabriel’s creative process.

“My process for painting truly embraces the digital realm as inspiration and digital pathways for the creation of images. By creating worlds in 3D software, being able to inhabit it and set the scene for moments to happen, these images reveal themselves as they would simply walking around and taking in scenes from real life. The act of painting these images solve a problem that, for me, digital images terribly ache from; giving them an artefactual quality creating a visceral response from the viewer that transcends our ways of consuming regular digital images.”

“The Power of Growth” by followed by some lovely words about the work.

Words from Jiang

“On the road ahead, not everything will go smoothly, we will face all kinds of challenges. There is greed for material possessions, pursuit of fame, desire for power, various temptations, and compromises. However, none of these can stop the ‘power of growth’, Just like this pine tree, it twists and turns, breaks through obstacles, and grows upwards prouder and stronger everyday.”

“I find that there is a lot of hidden beauty in construction. There are loads of recurring patterns and sequences I find really interesting. A lot of them get covered up later on in the building process. I find myself to be naturally drawn to all sorts of patterns in general. You can find similar rhythms in
nature as well. For example, if you look at how trees and most other plants grow, you find a lot of interesting shapes and patterns. What I find most interesting is when these two worlds collide. There is this beautiful juxtaposition when you force straight lines and right angles onto organically grown resources like wood.”

Feeling uninspired on Thursday? Then maybe Nathan Hemi’s painting of ‘David Goggins’ will give you the boost you need. This work belongs to his recent series ‘Digital Fathers’. As Goggins would say “Be Uncommon amongst Uncommon People”.

“Over the past three years, my experience as a new father has led me through significant self-reflection and personal growth, striving to be a good father and positive role model for my son. This journey inspires my current series, “Digital Fathers,” which delves into the complexities of online masculinity and self-improvement culture. By combining digital and traditional painting techniques, I distort the images of prominent male figures, reflecting the confusion that many young men face in their search for guidance amidst a flood of conflicting messages.

The characters I’ve selected for this series represent a wide spectrum of backgrounds and perspectives on masculinity. From the quiet country side and humble life of a horse wrangler to a controversial ex-kickboxer living a lavish lifestyle. By examining these figures from a neutral perspective, I encourage a thoughtful dialogue rather than blind admiration.”

Ji Zou (b. 1994) is a Hmong Chinese American artist based in New York City. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design. Her paintings, informed by personal cosmologies, use figuration to explore the intersections of physical and spiritual identity.

The piece titled Prayer Piece draws reference from Hmong and Chinese (Yunnan and Guizhou) shamanic practices, referencing tools such as masks and incense used to connect with ancestral spirits and spiritual realms. In the work, the color white symbolizes cruelty or hypocrisy, while the metallic sheen of the mask, contrasted with red moire patterns across the body, evokes the aesthetics of digital rendering.

Zou employs these elements to reflect a desire for spiritual connection while navigating a world shaped by late digital capitalism.

Remember those days in school when you’d doodle 3D boxes and houses on the corners of our notebooks? Well, NORTH/WEST by feels like the grown-up, ultra-polished version of that nostalgia—except instead of pencil scratches, it’s made of wood and painted so precisely it tricks your eyes into thinking it’s popping off the wall. The work is flat, but it has that bold 3D vibe that messes with your perception in the coolest way. It’s like a playful throwback to simpler times, but with a level of craftsmanship that screams pro. A perfect mix of art, fun, and memories!

Kiko Miyares, an artist based in Llanes, Spain, has transformed the notion of being ‘caught in the headlights’ through his distinctive collection of carved wooden cars. Each vehicle, meticulously crafted from a single piece of timber, transcends static sculpture to become dynamic pieces that play with perception and form. Illuminated by their vibrant high-beams, these miniature creations project a variety of landscapes and scenarios, encouraging viewers to engage in a creative exploration where shapes, dimensions, and perspectives intertwine.

Miyares’ art challenges traditional boundaries by blending aesthetics with functionality, exploring how an object’s form can reshape our perception. His series of cars features elongated, sturdy lights that also serve as slender columns, suggesting a movement that is grounded.

One of the most prevalent motifs in JAK’s work is the black cat. After a period of intense loss, this symbol, normally associated with bad luck or witchcraft, was repurposed as an obelisk of remembrance. With large omniscient eyes, they serve as an almost angelic reminder of loved ones past, illustrating that a symbol is only as powerful as it is allowed to be.
