OUT NOW!
Episode 2 of the brand new series of The Word with Miranda.
In this podcast I catche up with Steve Symons, Booker for the West Holts Stage, one of the world's biggest festival stages. Did you know 2/3's of the adult population in the UK watch the Glastonbury Festivals on the TV? So as a booker Steve not just curates for the festival goers but for people watching on TV and around the world.

With over 100 stages at Glastonbury, West Holts has grown into the 3rd biggest and most iconic. In this podcast we find out how the stage has gained this reputation and some of the secrets behind creating an iconic festival stage.
Steve celebrates 40 years of working at Glastonbury Festival this year.

West Holts is described by Steve as the outernational rhythm hub of Glastonbury, taking you on a journey from spiritual jazz and neo soul through cosmic disco, dance queen divas, breakbeat culture , afrofunk, reggae, hip hop, psychedelia and music that defies any categorisation at all and most definitely not a World Music Stage. Standing on its own merit of a global reputation built up by Steve and his team, the success of this stage is undoubtedly because it defies all categorisation as he works tirelessly searching the world for the very best of music, regardless of genre. From Japanese orchestras to Hip hop legends, this stage has seen them all from Nile Rodgers to Anderson .Paak, A Tribe Called Quest, Roy Ayers, The Roots, just to name a few that I had the privilege of seeing myself.

For many years the backstage bar at the West Holts Stage, formerly known as the Jazz/World stage, was a hidden secret for all musicians & crew and hosted jam sessions that would go all night and feature performers from the Pyramid stage & across the site alongside DJ's, including myself and the collaborations was something you could only dream of. It was known for being the place to hang out "afterhours", mainly because it was the only place. Michael Eavis would often be seen chilling with the team. My memories of seeing some of my musical heroes jamming and at arms length is something I will be telling my grand kids about....I feel utterly privileged to have had this experience for the few years I did, so I am so excited to hear some of Steve's stories.

When I asked Steve to delve a bit deeper and try and explain the ethos of the music of West Holts stage he replied:
"Paying respect to the elders and generations gone before us that have led music to where it is today and that pretty much anything that is good in music has come from Africa originally and the Black American tradition over 100 years has given us everything from Jazz to Techno and way beyond". Wise words Steve.

Steve sets us up for this year's incredible lineup including the amazing back story of singer Asha Puthli, now in her 70's but was ostracized when she tried to launch her career decades before. Returning to the global stage after 44 years, one of the greatest vocalists of all time.

Some of Steve's highlights over the years include Nile Rogers, Shibusashirazu Orchestra & Jerry Dammers Spatial Aka Orchestra, but a bit like being asked which is your favourite child, after 40 years I suspect it is an impossible question to answer...

It's these kinds of acts that make West Holts stand alone from any other festival stage and why Steve has created such a well deserved reputation, here's to his next 40 years curating the West Holts Stage at Glastonbury Festival.

Just some of the bands Steve is looking forward to seeing this year include:
Jungle
Jessie Ware
Puthli
Justice
Heilung
Nia Archives
Corinne Bailey Rae

Plus two amazing hosts/comperes:

Jasmine Ketibuah-foley and Angel Mel Selector.

And DJ's Ben Dubuisson and Dave Smeaton.

Have a listen and please share this podcast and find out what Steve looks for when booking a band and why he is so looking forward to this year's acts.

Please do share and watch the 1st Episode of this new series "Inner Wilds" produced by Wild Life Stories exploring mental health as episode uses mythical and imaginative creatures to illustrate diverse mental health experiences - from BPD to Imposter Syndrome and beyond.

I had to take a moment to compose myself to write this as I was so deeply moved by this beautiful, courageous episode. A beautiful creature, the Emotopus with its sensory tenticles has discovered its super power whilst acknowledgings its vulnerabilies and that is something we can all relate to in one way or another, we wear our masks and build up our walls over the years and I hope that one day I meet my dolphin which will help me remember to be strong and brave and authentic. The comparisons of the Emotopus trying to fit in with that need we all have to be accepted and how we mimic people. Scientists are now saying that dogs are the most intelligent of animals, over the years they have evolved their eyebrows in a way to mimic their human owners to make them more appealing so you have on the one side; survival and the necessity to fit it in but if we could all be our authentic and vulnerable selves then we wouldnt need to. Fascinating insight, beautiful and moving.

The Recovery Festival is a family-friendly, free festival, now celebrating its 11th year in the heart of Bristol. Having grown each year we are now the biggest recovery-focused event in the South West and we look forward to welcoming you to our 3rd event at Trinity on 20th June.

Each year we create an atmosphere of fun, hope, and inclusivity, allowing us to meet as equals and be inspired by one another. We celebrate the achievements of our community and offer the opportunity to learn new skills and build support networks.

For those working in treatment and support services, we help enhance knowledge and experience of recovery and offer the opportunity to meet people who have survived, thrived, and moved on to healthier and happier lives.

This year, the main stage will again be hosted by recovery record label Not Saints, curating an afternoon of bands, solo artists, and DJs as well as recovery community music and drama groups. Hosting an afternoon of intimate showcase will be the fantastic Bristol Sober Spaces in the main art space, alongside films from Recovery Street Film Festival and Bristol film maker, Arthur Galloway Cauty.

This years music line up includes:
Milli On-Air, MoYah, The Daffodilos, Wizz, Livvy Hilton-Smith,
The Velveteen Orkestra, Rosina Buck, Rising Voices Recovery Choir ~ Bristol Recovery Orchestra ~ Morning After Drama with Paul Danan ~ Bristol Sober Spaces Open Mic

We’ll have information and stalls from 40 local organisations, holistic healing, and wellbeing treatments, alongside our creative arts zone.

In the garden, we’ll have Speakers Corner, featuring an array of inspiring speakers. Throughout the day we’ll also have a host of mutual aid taster sessions from both 12-step and Smart Recovery groups, plus we’ve got free haircuts and a face painter!

It's incredible how a few words can cause such an important ripple effect...on reading the foreword from Milo Johnson's Biography "Stray" it inspired me to open up to my son and explain the trauma I went through as an adult and a child. I spent almost 18 years protecting him, providing for him, keeping him safe and above all giving him every ounce of my love. And then I read this and it gave me the courage to open up to my boy and I am glad I did. He had no idea why I am the way I am, he never even noticed but of course you cant hide anything from them once they grow up. So my heart felt thanks to Milo for having the courage to explain his motive for writing such a revealing account of his life…
Mile writes:
“This book started as a letter to you, my children. I love you all very much, but the things I experienced early in my life have been an obstacle to my growth and my fathering. As I reached my fifties it became a priority to explain who I am to you. Not just the hard times, but the positives of my past too – including the things that I did not understand the significance of when I was in the moment and took for granted.”

The memoir of Milo Johnson (Aka Dj Milo) is both a fascinating insight into the life of one of the pioneers of what became known as the Bristol Sound and a harrowing personal story. Milo was one of the founder members of Wild Bunch, the Bristol multi genre sound system that spawned Massive Attack,

Say His Name...George Floyd...25th May 2020

One year after the brutal murder of George Floyd, The Word produced and presented a tribute to George Floyd and I was honoured to be able to share the reflections of many voices from the Bristol Community and ends with the moving poem by Antonette Eulinda Clarke entitled 'George Floyd - The Catalyst for Change' and archive material from the iconic Bristol Activist Sir Paul Stephenson OBE.

Thank you to all the contributors including Gary Hines from the Sounds of Blackness, Lynn Mareno, Desmond Brown, Marvin Rees, Angel Mel, Carmen Carrol, Jendayi Serwah, Corrd the Seeker, and Faada Sojie. Plus amazing speeches from the iconic Protest that took place just 12 days after the murder of George Floyd in Bristol when the statue of slave trader Edward Colston was hauled down and thrown into the river. We hear from the incredibly talented recording artist Delocx, former poet laureate Mile Chambers and the then 9 year old Tianna.

With thanks to Dawn Limbu and Angel Mel for their help collating some of the speeches we hear from the Protest that took place on 7th June 2020.

Wishmaster is firmly established himself as one the UK's Hip Hop stars. A true wordsmith and incredible recording artist from Bristol. Wishmaster's music and lyrics are powerful and relevant. Wishmaster caught the attention of the media when he spoke on the empty plinth of where the statue of slave trader Edward Colston had stood and was toppled at the Black Lives Matter Protest in Bristol on Sunday 7th June 2020, an iconic moment in Bristol history. Wishmaster has a superb album out on his label Official Recordings called The Bull available on all the usual digital platforms.

TODAY on The Word on
Ujima Radio I will be joined by the entire force of the incredible Zulu Choir! The 20 children who make up Zulu Choir will be performing live on the show! Make sure don't miss this incredible live performance 4-6pm today on Ujima Radio!

After a five-year hiatus, the incredibly talented and inspirational Project Zulu children’s choir from the Madadeni Township in South Africa is set to return to the UK in May for a three-week tour.

The 20 schoolchildren, aged from eight to 15-years-old, will be entertaining audiences across Bristol, Bath and the South West, from 20 May until 11 June. They will perform a range of traditional Zulu songs and dances, including gospel songs and gumboot dances in full Zulu attire.

This will be the first time the nine boys and 11 girls have travelled abroad and they, along with four accompanying adults, will be staying with local host families in Bristol for the duration of the tour.

Money raised during the trip will be split equally between the two schools - Mntimande Primary and Jobstown Primary - and used to build new classrooms to reduce overcrowding.

The choir tour is part of Project Zulu, a UWE Bristol initiative which has been working in partnership with South African township schools to support the delivery of educational development projects since 2012, with the most recent volunteering visit by students and staff taking place in February 2023.

The first Project Zulu choir tour took place in 2013 and continued biennially until it was halted by the pandemic. Now, with a mixture of ticketed and free events including busking which is sure to stop shoppers in their tracks, the children hope to wow audiences with their infectious love of music once again.

In addition to the concerts, the choir will visit eight schools in and around Bristol during the tour, offering cultural exchange opportunities and musical workshops. These schools are all fundraising to support the choir; the money raised by the Bristol school pupils will go directly back to schools in South Africa to help build their classrooms. This is a unique opportunity for these schoolchildren to meet the beneficiaries they are fundraising for.

To purchase tickets and to view the full list of dates, visit the Project Zulu website:

https://www.projectzulu.org/choir-tours/2023-choir-tour

Highlights include:

Friday 2nd June: Busking day, central Bristol (public spaces) all day. FREE EVENT (location and times to be announced)

Friday 9th June: Finale concert - Clifton College Chapel, 7pm (Ticketed)
