Bristol Museum is delighted to announce the premiere of a new documentary about Guy Bailey, one of the heroes of the Bristol Bus Boycott on 18th October.

Beyond the Scars: Guy Bailey’s Impact on Bristol is the latest release from local filmmaker and veteran community activist Clive Smith, under his AS IT IS TV banner. Clive moved to Bristol from Jamaica in 1962, and has cemented himself in the heart of the city’s Afrikan-Caribbean community ever since. Over the years, Clive has been a footballer, dancer, musician, actor, and agent. However, documentary cinema has been his defining passion of late, and he has won multiple awards for his work.

The film will show what Guy has achieved for Bristol, and for England, in the years since he went for that now-infamous job interview. Besides his lifelong pursuit of civil rights activism, Guy has secured housing for community elders, helped give youths a future through sport, and has been one of the pillars of Bristol’s Afrikan-Caribbean community for over sixty years.

This event will feature a screening of the film, followed by a Q+A and panel discussion featuring Jacqui Wilson, University of Bristol's Marie-Annick Gournet, Clive Smith, and Dr Guy Bailey OBE himself, moderated by Rodney Wilson. There will then be a performance by singer-songwriter and poet Nia Bimkubwa. DJ Style and Donovan Jackson from City Rockas Vibrations on Ujima 98 fm will end the night on a high, and catering will be provided by the institution that is Nadine’s Caribbean Cafe. There will even be discussion of a new, ambitious, ongoing project which will use Guy’s life as a way to bring the rich history of the community into the limelight, where it belongs.

Tune and check out The Word with Miranda every Friday 4-6pm on Ujima Radio!

This week's special guest is the reigning Miss Caribbean UK,
Eshiva Wright. We delve behind the scenes and find out what kind of event this is and pull back the curtains on a new era of celebrating female empowerment. Clayton & Jacqui Brown have worked tirellesly to ensure this is an event that has been structured to inspire, promote, educate and celebrate the historical and cultural impact of the Caribbean with the United Kingdom by creating a vehicle to assist in bringing the Caribbean and its Diaspora within the UK closer.

We also meeting up the inspiring, awarding winning author of Jo's Hidden Secrets, Emma louise James.

Emma tells us her story - how she coped as a child and how it has affected her as an adult. From epilepsy to battling against mental illness, eating disorders, domestic abuse in different forms, challenges at work and all the PTSD that goes with it on top of desperate poverty, inadequate housing and oppressive debt. But it isn't just a tale of a series of destructive episodes or perpetual trauma. In the midst of the darkness, Emma discovers people who care. She finds care through the NHS and a plethora of local and national charities and shares her story with us on Ujima Radio.
