At Wounded Buffalo Sound Studios, we’re proud to have contributed to the breathtaking series The Secret Lives of Animals, narrated by the inimitable Hugh Bonneville (Paddington, Downton Abbey). This groundbreaking Apple TV+ series, produced by the BBC Studios Natural History Unit, takes viewers on a global journey to uncover the astonishing behaviours of 77 species across 24 countries, revealing moments never before captured on camera.

Our sound team worked tirelessly to bring these incredible stories to life, weaving together the unique soundscapes of nature to immerse audiences in every step, leap, and flutter of the animal world.

From the delicate vibrations of an orb-weaving spider crafting its puppet decoy to the rustling footsteps of a wood mouse navigating its ingenious signposts, our goal was to give these moments the vivid realism and emotional resonance they deserve.

It’s always a privilege to collaborate on projects that showcase the wonders of our natural world, and The Secret Lives of Animals is no exception.

A huge congratulations to Matt Brandon, Roger Webb, and the entire BBC Studios Natural History Unit team on this extraordinary achievement.

We’re proud to have played a part in creating a sonic tapestry for this vibrant celebration of animal intelligence and adaptability.

We were so fortunate to have known Vicky Stone, a brave, kind and intelligent human being and one of the most talented producers we have ever had the pleasure to work with. Along with husband Mark they practically single handedly made the multi award winning films, Queen of Trees, The Elephant Queen and The Elephant and the Termite. We are hugely honoured to have played our part in their making. Together Vicky and Mark had an extraordinary ability to bring their insight of the natural world to our screens. Not only a massive loss to the film industry, Vicky has left a massive hole in the hearts of her friends.

We are delighted that ‘Our Oceans’ is on Netflix from today! It was a pleasure to work with the Emmy Award-winning team from Wild Space Productions and Freeborne Media on this series narrated by President Barack Obama.
This series is a rollercoaster of highs and lows, light and shade. Action-packed sequences pause for quiet, reflective moments, allowing the viewer to catch their breath before plunging into another gripping life-and-death scene. The sound team faced a significant challenge: not only is the film predominantly set in water, one of the trickiest soundscapes to authentically capture, but the depth and scope of the sound required was immense.
The first six minutes of the opening episode feature some of the most demanding mixing work, where the huge sound effects of the sea and dramatic orchestral music had to be perfectly balanced — not just with each other, but also with Barack Obama’s narration.
Much of the footage was captured with long lenses or noisy drones, meaning it was mute, requiring extensive research and carefully tracklaying authentic sounds. For the magnitude of the waves, multiple layers were used: bassy booms, crashing water, and spray for each impact. This was then contrasted with intricate Foley details, like penguin feet finally landing on terra firma, bringing the audience relief as the penguins survived the violent seas.
A lot of wild track recordings were also used, which we always love. The sound was given space to breathe in quieter scenes, like the gentle krill sequences. Here, layers of delicate Foley recordings were crafted for an intimate, intricate texture before launching into another dramatic sequence, such as the killer whale hunt, which has never been seen on this scale before. The relentless pursuit of the crabeater seal was exhausting to watch, and the sound design had to reflect the intensity of the hunt. Huge bow waves, the whales blowing, the seal skidding across the ice, and its desperate dives and scrambles back onto the ice raft all demanded precise perspective and sound depth to convey the drama.
The soundscape was also rich in variety. From the raucous calls of chinstrap penguins to underwater tail-whipping handfish, from bleak snowy glaciers to creaking, rumbling fjords and hostile open seas, each environment required a distinct palette of sounds.
In total, over 150 tracks of sound were auditioned, appraised, and balanced in the final mix to create a diverse, rich, and immersive soundtrack.
Our team on this series was:

Tim Owens, Kate Hopkins, Jonny Crew, Tom Mercer – Sound Editor
Ben & Hannah – Dubbing Mixer
Rory & Myles – Foley Artist
Ellie & George – Foley Editor
