Enter the Ghost Train: THE SURF RATS make us witness “Strange Things” on their new album

Do you remember my review for the SURF RATS vinyl 7’’”Strange Things Happen Here At Midnight” (Just For Fun Productions)? The title track was outstanding good and the expectations were high, when the album “Strange Things” (Greystone Records) made it to my desk. If I had to choose a motto for this record, it would be “Expect The Unexpected”. Gaz Marson (vocals and guitar), Thomas Lorioux (Upright Bass) and Gaybeul Gualdi on drums plus a whole bunch of guest musicians have prepared a fantastic witching hour made to scare the s**t out of purists. Which means, it is extremely entertaining for the open minded crowds at the same time.

“Strange Things (Happen Here At Midnight)” opens the album with the clock marking the midnight hour, the gorgeous melody, the breathtaking break and the funny skeleton-playing-the-piano-middle part. The only thing that’s better than listening to this outstanding song on the longplayer is to own the 7’’. The enthralling question is: What will the band deliver after this masterpiece? Well, “Deal With The Devil” is a surprising aggressive piece of music, that kicks ass with a chorus that doesn’t care to much about melody, but shows the rhythm section as a precise weapon of musical destruction, while Andy Kandil (MOONSHINE STALKERS, GUITAR SLINGERS, KDV DEVIATORS) contributes some guitar soling. Wow. That was a blast. Wasn’t it? But what the heck happens next? The CD-Bonus “Big Fat Cadillac” recalls the SKA-sounds of all time heroes THE SPECIALS with some guest horns and organ and a laid back feeling that suddenly made me smile like a pancake on happy pills. This has nothing to do with psycho, but as I always was into SKA besides psychobilly, the song is a gift. Well written, well performed. Who could ask for more?

Well how about a dark ballad, that makes you shiver? “Alone In The Dark” is a great piece of spooky music that hides a powerful surprise within. I won’t say anything else here than: breathtaking! “The Deceiver” combines a more rocking approach with a return to psycho madness and paves the way for the rockabilly rooted “Velvet Lovebone (Trip Daddy)”. No doubt: This is a true billy-band. The guys just like to take a look at other musical terrain here and there. And be it the jungle of “Widababakiki”. No, this is not at all an attempt to follow KING KURT destination Zululand. It’s a wild psychobilly outbreak with a slightly progressive twist that doesn’t decrease the energy and shows the finesse of the band that launches into some kind of Balkan infused Neo-Swing-Psychobilly next with “Smash It Up, Smash It Up” next.

It’s hard not to mention every song. The dark “Murder In The Tub”, that has some kind of TOM WAITS feeling, features producer and label owner Scott Milsom (Ex COFFIN NAILS) on upright bass. It shows another cool facette. And how about the accordion and the pirate feeling of “Where Do You Go To When You’re Dead”? After two more uptempo numbers (“It’s The End” sounds a bit as if someone had crossbred older SURF RATS, NEKROMANTIX and MOTÖRHEAD). “Low” ends the fun with some sophisticated bar jazz. Well, it could happen, that the sophisticated performers plunder the bar and desolate the club in the early morning. Who knows? Strange things happen her at Midnight or thereafter… But be honest: Would you like to miss any of it?

Erinnert Ihr Euch noch an meine Rezension der SURF RATS Vinyl 7'' „Strange Things Happen Here At Midnight” (Just For Fun Productions)?

Beeindruckend. Gut geschrieben, gut gemacht. Was will man mehr?

It Up, Smash It Up“ in Richtung balkan-beeinflussten Neo-Swing-Psychobilly abbiegt.

Where Do You Go To When You’re Dead”?

Look what came in the mail this morning. Almost there.

Almost done! Scott working on final mixing tweaks today and tomorrow ready for proper mastering on Thursday. Still on schedule for a mid April release. It's been a huge amount of work for all concerned making this album and I think the results will speak for themselves.

It's been 35 years since myself, my little brother, Stan and a school pal, Nigel formed a little garage psychobilly band called The Wharf Rats. Nigel moved on, Carty joined in 1985 and we became The Surf Rats. Our iconic debut album, Trouble is 30 years old in 2018 and to celebrate these milestones we are releasing our 4th studio album in April on Greystone Records. In support we hope to be playing as many shows as possible. Thank you Surf Rats fans worldwide. We'll see you in your pit wherever you may be.
