-.-.-.This is a story that Alice Cooper told about John and Brian Wilson.
“I was sitting backstage after the 1974 Grammys with Bernie Taupin (Elton John’s lyricist) and John Lennon. This was when Brian was really having some mental issues,” said Cooper.
“During the course of the conversation, I kept seeing Brian out of the corner of my eye, just kind of staring at us from different angles.”
“Finally, he came up to the table, bent down and whispered in my ear ‘Hey Alice, introduce me to John Lennon.’ I couldn’t BELIEVE that these two men had never met! They were virtually neck and neck in the 60’s as the greatest bands on the planet, and I’m SURE they must have crossed paths at some point. But then I thought to myself, ‘Wow, I’m going to be the one to introduce them and become a part of rock history!’”
“So I merely said, ‘Brian Wilson, this is John Lennon. John Lennon, this is Brian Wilson.’ Lennon was very cordial and polite, saying things like ‘Hello Brian, I’ve always wanted to meet you. I’ve always admired your work, and Paul and I considered Pet Sounds one of the best albums ever made.’ Brian thanked him and walked away, at which point Lennon went right back to his conversation like nothing had happened.”
“About ten minutes later, Brian came by our table again, leaned down and whispered something to Bernie, and all of a sudden, Bernie was saying ‘Brian Wilson, this is John Lennon. John Lennon, Brian Wilson.’ Lennon was just as cordial and polite as the first time, saying essentially the same thing about always wanting to meet him.
As soon as Brian walked away, John looked at both of us and casually said in his typical Liverpudlian accent, ‘I’ve met him hundreds of times. He’s not well, you know.’”
We were impressed by John’s empathy and kindness in dealing with Brian and thankful that Brian has found some mental stability following tumultuous times.
Thanks to Boris for the story, photo and check out Alice’s T-Shirt. It is soooooo Alice Cooper.

Super 8: Episode 4
Was The Beatles swan song their greatest album?

The last album The Beatles ever made, Abbey Road was recorded at a secret location somewhere in north-west London. Nobody’s quite sure to this day where the studio was hidden away, so while we don’t know where, we do know how it was made.

It was largely recorded onto an M23 8-track tape deck from 3M. The previously released Sgt. Pepper album was kind of 8-track, in that it was recorded on two synchronised 4-track tape machines. But EMI didn’t install 8-track recorders at Abbey Road Studios until 1968. Up to that point the band had been going to Trident to use 8-track tape. And Abbey Road was the only Beatles album recorded through a solid state desk: the EMI TG12345, which had 24 mic channels bussed to 8 tape outputs. It’s also the desk that The Dark Side Of The Moon was recorded through. Although Abbey Road was released before Let It Be, Abbey Road was recorded later. The cry of unity that opens the album, Come Together, was ironically one of the last things The Beatles recorded before they fell apart. When Abbey Road was released there were only 3 months left of the 1960s, a decade like no other; and there were only 7 months left for The Beatles.

But they were still pushing the technology to it’s limits. Abbey Road was the apex of studio creativity for The Beatles. They pushed sound recording techniques into the future. So that people like you could benefit, so don’t waste the opportunity! Come on down to Albert Road and make an album.

Super 8: Episode 3
Don’t ignore the Elephant in the control room…

… you might end up winning a Grammy. In April 2002 the White Stripes spent two weeks at Toe Rag Studios recording their 4th album Elephant. It’s a great sounding record - you’d be forgiven for thinking it was done in one of those great big Nashville rooms, through the biggest vintage desk, onto the latest expensive DAW software.

But Toe Rag was actually in Hackney, has a modest live room, and Elephant was recorded onto 8-track analogue tape. Can you imagine? Only eight tracks to record Seven Nation Army? On the album’s sleeve they claimed that none of the recording equipment was more recent than 1963, which is of course an exaggeration as much of the gear they used was newer - including the tape machines. The Studer A80 8-track machine used to record Elephant was a Mark II model from the early 1970s. We have a Studer A80 2-track at New Cut Studios for mastering to tape. It used to live in Glasgow’s West End, we presume, since it has a sticker for BBC Scotland. The album is a high point in their career and indeed, it won a Grammy.

And as to the gear used for the phenomenal guitar sounds, well some of it wasn’t even thought of in 1963. Sick of staring at dozens of tracks of vocal takes and a blizzard of guitars? Don’t know where the plug-ins end and the music begins? Come and make a recording at New Cut Studios. Our 8 track Otari tape machine may be 30 years old, but it’s no white elephant.

Super 8: Episode 3. How the White Stripes used old tech to get a Grammy but lied about it's real age; and just what gear did Jack use to reinvent guitar music?

Super 8: Episode 2
Do you have Sweet Dreams about re-inventing yourself?

Art-Pop, pristine production, state of the art equipment, a top-flight studio and 24 record tracks to play with - how else could you produce an album as futuristic as Sweet Dreams (Are made of This) in 1982? Actually, Eurythmics recorded everything themselves, in a large attic room, on an 8-track tape machine with some old analogue synths, an experimental drum machine and a whole lot of ingenuity.

Dave Stewart had been paying attention when Conny Plank was producing their debut. Holger Czukay from Can had worked on the album as well and both he and Plank encouraged Stewart to bend the ‘rules’ of accepted studio practice and experiment with recording techniques. Dave Stewart had this to say of the experience: "Conny and his partner Holger took me aside one day to show me what they were doing - all these weird, obscure experiments… and these were forty year-old men! They were like kids with paint pots and a blank canvas, they could do anything." This influence was revealed on Eurythmics’ second album in a truly creative approach to sound design. That incredible title track, a single that swept around the world like a disco tsunami, includes such state-of-the-art digital synthesizers as tuned milk bottles and an old Farfisa Compact organ put through a spring reverb.

And the recorder? It was all done to analogue 8-track ½” tape on a Teac 80-8. We like to record to ½” 8-track analogue tape as well, here at New Cut Studios. Dave Stewart has said that the synth top line from Sweet Dreams was played on a polyphonic Oberheim OB-X — we also have an original monophonic 1978 OB-1 at New Cut. Think you can work fast & be creative by only committing to a small number of instruments and choices? Come to New Cut Studios to see how old technology can make something new & exciting.

Super 8: Episode 2. Our look at 8-track analogue tape recording continues with a dancefloor crusher that never went near a DAW. In fact some of the gear used to make it was downright homemade.

Super 8: Episode 1
Need an injection of Bleach?

In Seattle’s MoPOP museum there is a rather ordinary looking tape machine. Granted, it is a professional 8-track recorder, and not just a domestic reel-to-reel machine - but it doesn’t look like anything special. It is however the machine on which Nirvana recorded their first album.

That’s right, Bleach was recorded on this modest 8-track deck. And that same Otari tape deck, in the hands of Jack Endino, recorded the cream of the Seattle crop back in the day - almost all the early recordings by Soundgarden, Mudhoney, TAD and Green River were made on this 8 track machine at Reciprocal Recording in Seattle - never mind the prequel to an album that would knock Michael Jackson off the Billboard No.1 and sell over 30 million copies. Bleach may have been eclipsed by it’s sequel thirty years ago, but superb songs like School, Love Buzz and About A Girl still sound great to this day.

One of the ways we like to record is to ½” 8 track analogue tape here at New Cut Studios - and our recorder of choice for tracking is exactly the same tape machine: the Otari MX5050. Songs such as Negative Creep, Mr. Moustache and Blew were all done on a tape machine identical to ours. Want to record a band, that sounds like a band? Think you can be the next Nirvana? Come to New Cut Studios and make something memorable.

Jack White's 'plastic' guitar was pioneering in concept but took decades to be widely appreciated. While recently researching for a blog about Elephant, I just so happened to have one sat in my lap. The Airline Jetson, ready for take-off:

What colour connects Peter Green, PJ Harvey, Noel Gallagher and Jimmy Page? In the war for the hearts & minds of guitarists the battle has always been fought on two fronts, since both sound & vision need to be appealing for anyone with a creative bent. Few brands have done as much to stand out with their visual appeal as the Orange Music Electronic Co. Ltd.
