A Sector In Crisis - How did we get here + Actions for freelancers
Bectu's 'Sector in Crisis' report published earlier this year illustrates the unfortunate realities that many TV professionals are currently living.
With high levels of unemployment, reports of low mental health and many feeling forced to leave the TV industry in pursuit of financial stability, Gritty Talent's Remi Brand asks the question: how did we get here? What factors are at play and how have they contributed to the current climate? And perhaps most importantly, how are the industry's talent navigating these hurdles?

The under-representation of historically marginalised groups in the UK TV industry, both on and off screen is one of the sector's thorniest and deep rooted problems.
Over the last decade we’ve seen the growth of creative diversity teams, the launch of many initiatives and the introduction of mandatory diversity targets to try to shift the dial. But why?
As well as being the right thing to do to support an equitable society - it’s a critical business priority. The TV industry knows that to be relevant to UK and global audiences, it must fully reflect their diversity, perspectives and identities.
Trouble is, there’s no quick fix. There are multiple factors that interplay which mean someone might find accessing and maintaining a career in TV and the wider creative sector. We need to address a mix of financial, cultural, structural and attitudinal barriers to become an industry that is truly inclusive of people from all groups.
Finding ways to achieve authentic and consistent representation is the reason Gritty Talent was founded and why we continue to do the work we do: connecting talent from under-represented groups into the industry and supporting production companies and decision makers to incorporate meaningful diversity and inclusion into everything they do.
But what is ‘under-representation’? Who exactly is under-represented? And why does representation even matter? These are all great questions, and ones we hear often.
Over the course of the next few weeks, we’ll be exploring these questions and taking a deep dive into the issues surrounding under-representation and how as an industry we can develop more inclusive practices. So turn your notifications on and keep an eye on Gritty Talent’s social media channels!
Can’t wait? We’ve already got tons of info at https://www.grittytalent.tv/under-representation that you can check out right now!

“When people are refusing me that access, it’s just so frustrating. Why don’t you want me as a customer?”
The Equality Act 2010 not only prevents service providers, like restaurants, from discriminating against those who need an assistance dog with them, but it also requires service providers to make reasonable adjustments for disabled customers.
Despite being illegal in almost all instances, Amy frequently gets turned away from services like shops and restaurants because of her guide dog, Ava, leaving her to have to fight her case on a regular basis.

“These intersections of homophobia, ableism, misogyny, transphobia, racism; they create a compounded experience that certainly I can’t speak to, and we need other voices speaking to it”
Someone’s condition is just one part of a complex and unique experience. The culmination of these traits and characteristics can have huge implications on factors across one’s life, as detailed by Dr Amy Kavanagh, who suggests the media industry look for the voices that can authentically speak to these matters of intersectionality to achieve true representation.

“Dyslexia affects every part of one's life… just be aware of the fact that being neurodivergent is all encompassing and is part of who someone is.”
Onyinye Udokporo is a multi-business entrepreneur, educator, content creator and published author who also has dyslexia; something that affects everything from her presentation, to her orientation and organisation.
Rather than shun part of her identity, Onyinye has learned how to work with her dyslexia, culminating in her first book, ‘Dyslexia and Me: How To Survive and Thrive If You’re Neurodivergent’.

“...Like, ‘Oh, there’s one person who looks like me; or there’s a storyline ‘about me’, or my condition, but it doesn’t really talk about me as a person, it’s my disability”
Multi-talented producer and talent agent Abbie Hills @itsabbiehills reflects on the industry’s efforts over the last decade in authentic media representation of disability; from near non-existent, to ‘tokenism’. Are we now moving towards something truly sincere and authentic?
