RUSSIAN INVASION

In light of what we are all seeing today in regards to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, do you think the UK and other ally nations are doing enough to protect and support the Ukrainian people?

We've heard this afternoon that the UK have placed troops in strategic positions of neighbouring countries from 45 Commando and other regiments. Those troops are ready to act as and when they're ordered to do so!

We've heard a lot of talking about economic and financial sanctions but sanctions won't stop missiles, bullets and artilary shells from striking innocent Ukranians.

Tell us what you think and what you'd like to see from the UK and other allies of Ukraine.

A grieving daughter was left shocked after council workers dumped a huge pile of earth on her father's grave.

Siobhan Smart was visiting her father's unmarked grave at Kingsdown Crematorium in Swindon on his birthday when she discovered the 4ft pile of soil.

The family said the council "should be ashamed to disrespect somebody's resting place like this".

Swindon Borough Council apologised but said the soil was from a neighbouring plot and it was a "standard practice".

Ms Smart, who lost her father, Andrew Kill, to bowel cancer five years ago, was visiting the crematorium on 7 December, when she discovered gravediggers had dumped earth over his grave.

"I went to take things there to make my dad's grave look presentable over Christmas," she said.

"And the digger man ran up to us and said 'sorry were you visiting that grave?'."

"I asked why he didn’t use the other empty pitches instead, out of respect."

She said the mound of earth that had been piled up on her father's grave was "that big" it was shocking.

"I wasn’t given any notice," she said.

"They should inform families, before they travel all the way to see their loved ones and experience what I did."

A spokesman for the council said boards are placed on top of graves to protect them when soil is being moved.

"We completely understand it can be distressing for relatives when soil is placed on neighbouring graves in this way," he said.

"We know it can appear unsightly but it is standard practice in working cemeteries and is set out in our cemetery regulations."

He added: "We are sorry to hear about the offence caused to Mr and Mrs Smart and we will ensure we follow up their complaint."

A man who held a knife to a woman’s throat and threatened to kill a police officer before attempting to hijack a car has been jailed for six years.

James Tallon, of no fixed address, carried out the series of offences as he attempted to evade arrest for other offences.

On 14 December last year in Specsavers in Frome he grabbed a woman from behind and threatened her with a knife when officers came into the store. Using the woman as a shield, he managed to flee via a fire escape as officers deployed Tasers to no effect.

Shortly after, the 28-year-old was tackled to the ground by a member of security staff and a struggle ensued. Police officers deployed PAVA spray but Tallon managed to run off. He then tried to hjack a car containing two young children, demanding their mother get out the vehicle. The woman’s partner, who was in the passenger seat at the time, intervened and Tallon once again fled.

Concerted efforts were made by officers throughout the night and following day to arrest Tallon and he was eventually detained on 16 December.

An officer recognised him driving a vehicle and moved his police car to block it – resulting in him running off once more. He again resisted arrest, violently struggling with the officer before a colleague came to his assistance.

Following a trial at Taunton Crown Court last week he was convicted of false imprisonment, threats to kill a police officer, affray, possession of a bladed article and assault by beating. He was sentenced to six years in prison with an extended four years on licence.

Detective Constable George Pettingell said: “While thankfully no one was seriously injured as a result of Tallon’s violent behaviour, the events of 14 December will undoubtedly stay with all those involved for some time to come. I’d like to praise the victims for the bravery they’ve shown and thank them for supporting the prosecution of this dangerous man. The public are much safer with Tallon behind bars.”

Tonight at 7.00pm, why not join the Cathedral Choir, as churches and choirs across the city provide music for a CAROLS FOR BRISTOL service.

This has been one of the most challenging years in our nation’s living memory and for some, unbearably so.

In any other year, thousands of people would make their way into churches across Bristol, to sing their favourite carols and hear the timeless story of Christmas. Sadly this year, that will not be possible.

Instead, some churches in Bristol are coming together to create an online service namely CAROLS for BRISTOL.

With contributors including: Pat Lam, City Primary Schools, Charities, Agencies and Individuals serving Bristol, Lady Nade & Elles Bailey, NHS Staff from the BRI and Southmead, Bristol Cathedral Choir.

A major cannabis-growing factory, believed to be worth more than £270,000, has been discovered by police at a house in Swindon.

The discovery was made yesterday after officers were tipped off to suspicious activity at Wheeler Avenue by an electrician working on a neighbouring house, he reported an anomaly with the amount of electricity being drawn by the property which was 24 times the amount of a normal household.

Officers searched the suspect house and found the entire top floor including the attic, was full to the brim of mature cannabis plants ready to be harvested.

Police are appealing for information to find those responsible for the crop.

Wiltshire's PC Adam Tape, from Swindon's community policing team, said: "This is a significant find of around 360 large mature cannabis plants, and a significant drugs operation that is no more.

He continued "Quite often criminals 'doctor' the amount of electricity going into a property to enable these factories to operate. This can have potentially fatal consequences for neighbouring homes, should something go wrong. We will always robustly pursue criminals who produce and distribute drugs on our streets.

"We'd like to thank the electrician for his actions and reporting his suspicions, solid intelligence is key to beating these criminals. Anyone who has information should call 101 and quote crime reference 54200122507.
People can also speak anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."

With covid vaccination rates increasing amongst the elderly and to be rolled out to everyone next year, how would you feel if you were asked to carry around a Covid card as proof of vaccination?

Well that may be a possibility according to some expert sources.

It is not yet known whether entry into mass indoor gatherings will require a vaccination card or not but that certainly seems to be a possibility in the near future, even if that's a short term measure until Covid-19 reaches miniscule infection rates.

Would you pay more council tax to support Avon and Somerset Police?

PCC Sue Mountstevens is encouraging local people to fill out our survey to share your opinion on an increase in the policing part of the council tax.

She said: "I know that any increase in household bills is felt by local people and after this extraordinary year, an increase in any bills is an even bigger ask."

"A 6.6% increase on the police funding part of council tax would cost a band D household just £15 per year, or £1.25 per month" she continued.

Have your say by taking part in the short survey: http://ow.ly/q7EC50CFGls

M.O.D FILTONPROTEST

Protesters from Extinction Rebellion Bristol and Christian Climate Action have blocked access to the Ministry of Defense site on the outskirts of Filton and Frenchay in Bristol.

They held banners with messages including "invest in life not death" during the protest this morning. They wrote on Twitter they want to "highlight the government's distorted spending priorities".

In posts and videos on social media, the group criticised the government's spending commitments on the climate, saying "they have only committed £16 billion to their 10 Point Climate Plan".

They are encouraging supporters who attend the protest to socially distance and bring hand gel and masks.

Shortly after 8am, police turned up at the site and could be seen talking to the protesters. Just moments ago the police dismantled the structures set up by protesters and allowed M.O.D traffic to gain access to the site.

The protest seems to be coming to an end!

CYCLE PATH STABBING

A 14-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent in connection with an assault on 21-year-old Maddi Forster.

Police were called at around 5.30pm on Monday 7 December, being told that Maddi had been stabbed whilst out running along the Warmley section of the B2b cycle path.

An appeal for information following the incident resulted in a number of witness reports which led to the arrest of the 14 year old. The suspect has since been released under investigation and enquiries are ongoing.

Anyone with further information that could assist police with their investigation should call 101 quoting crime reference number 5220275007.

We must stress that the police wouldn't release the 14 year old boy if they felt there was a risk of another incident occurring, having said that we reccomend that everyone who uses the cycle path to remain vigilant and stay within distanced groups if possible.

"Are they taking the P***?"

First bus have posted a social media message to all it's customers asking them to make sure all windows stay open during their journey.

In their post, they say "To keep everyone safe during the pandemic, government advice is to maintain air flow on our buses so we've installed reminder notices on the majority of our windows. Our drivers open the windows at the start of their shift, but if you notice one has been closed, please help us and your fellow passengers and open it. Breather blocks are also being installed on all the buses to prevent the window being closed fully. Whilst we appreciate the temperatures are starting to drop, ventilation on board is essential in keeping everyone safe."

What most of their customer are saying and rightfully so is that it's not essential to have every single window open on an 18ft double decker bus that has no heating during the coldest months of the year.

Surely it benefits the overall health of customers to allow some of the windows to be shut and a small amount of heated air to be pumped throughout the bus in order to maintain a reasonable temperature?

If you've ever caught a bus in the winter you'll know how ridiculously cold it can get as you're sat there motionless with all the windows open allowing the artic breeze to hit you in the face.

By the time you get off the bus, your nose is red, your ears are freezing and you're shivering after just 30 minutes on what feels like an open top tour of the Antarctica!

It's commonly known that the average person is more likely to start suffering from cold and flu symptoms this time of year partially due to the drop in temperature, so why they think that forcing us to inhale minus temperature oxygen is keeping us safe is beyond most people!

One person we spoke to this morning said "I call them (Buses) germ tanks because they're hardly ever cleaned and when they are cleaned its not done properly, they don't employ enough staff to clean them."

Have you recieved a covid fine from the police? Do you know somebody who has?

We want to hear from people that have recieved Covid fines as we're conducting an investigation into a potential conflict of interest between senior police officers and 3rd party fixed penalty notice enforcement companies.

Our investigation is in response to a video that is circulating which strongly suggests that the limited enforcement companies are profiting from covid fines issued by police officers who coincidentally sit on the board of directors of the very same enforcement company.

We have looked into the matter and have verified some of the claims but we want to see more examples of such corroboration between police forces and enforcement companies before we publish an evidential story on the matter.

BREAKING: Sad news this morning as we report that Dame Barbara Windsor passed away last night at the age of 83.

Dame Barbara was best known for her appearances in the carry on films, chitty chitty bang bang and then Eastenders where she played the no nonsense Land lady of the Queen Vic until 2016 when she left the square and was made a Dame for her services to charity and Entertainment.

In 2014 she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and subsequently moved to a London care home earlier this year. After her dementia diagnosis Dame Barbara became an ambassador for the Alzheimer's Society and met Prime Minister Boris Johnson to raise awareness about the disease . The star delivered a letter signed by 100,000 people pleading for better care for people affected by dementia and saying the system was "completely inadequate, unfair, unsustainable and in dire need of more money."

The couple went public with her diagnosis in 2018 and Mr Mitchell had said they had been really nervous about revealing she was affected by the condition. In his statement he thanked the public, family and friends for support which he said Barbara deeply appreciated.

Like her EastEnders character she was born in east London, in Shoreditch in 1937. She married three times, including to small-time criminal Ronnie Knight, and she also dated Charlie Kray and his brother Reggie. The actress married Mr Mitchell in 2000, with the pair having first met in 1992.

Mr Mitchell, who campaigned alongside his wife, said of her death: "It was not the ending that Barbara or anyone else living with this very cruel disease deserves. I will always be immensely proud of Barbara's courage, dignity and generosity dealing with her own illness and still trying to help others by raising awareness for as long as she could. I've lost my wife, my best friend and soul mate and my heart or life will never feel the same without you. She'll be remembered for the love, fun, friendship and brightness she brought to us all."

⚠️ WORD OF WARNING ⚠️

THIS IS NOT A CONSPIRACY THEORISTS SUPPORT GROUP

This morning we engaged with one of our readers who questioned the text of a recent post.

During that conversation it became apparent that she had no respect for those who believe in the realism of COVID-19 and support our NHS.

She has now been banned from the page.

We at Bristol media fully support the right to express your opinion and alternative views. However, if you cross the line and belittle the work of our NHS or insinuate that the millions of deaths around the world are the consequence of a plot to remove our human rights, and do so without showing credible and undisputable evidence to support your claims then you will be removed and banned from the page!

Out-of-work festival staff say they are "feeling useful" once more after joining a food charity's project.

The Shambala Festival team, who are mostly based in Bristol, opted to help with FoodStock 2020 after facing furlough during the pandemic.

Operations team member Christine Dent said it was "tough feeling at a loose end" since the festival was cancelled. They are now working with FareShare South West to distribute one million emergency meals by February 2021.

The project aims to stockpile emergency food and deliver it over winter to frontline services which ranges from food banks, schools, community centres, refuges, and other small charities.

Shambala Festival takes place every August in Northamptonshire at a secret location. It features 200 music acts across 12 live stages. In March, festival directors announced the event would be postponed until August 2021.

The food distribution project started on 19 November, so festival staff came off furlough and are now being paid.

"This year has been tricky, to say the least so it feels amazing to be doing something good and having a positive impact on the lives of people who are struggling. My usual role at Shambala is very busy and fast-paced which I love and it's been tough feeling I'm at a loose end, but it's been so rewarding to be busy again" Ms Dent said.

A Shambala Festival spokeswoman said "Our skills are very transferable and we're thriving. We work best as a team and it’s been very hard mentally to sit at home and watch the year pass us by. Putting on a festival is incredibly hard work, but we’ve learned that not putting on a festival is even harder. Foodstock 2020 is so worthwhile and is providing such a lifeline to the most critically vulnerable in our region."

FareShare South West CEO Julian Mines said the festival team's input "has been and will continue to be significant for the whole of the South West region during a very difficult winter".

UPDATE: AVONMOUTH EXPLOSION

Avon and Somerset Police said a cordon at the site was removed on Tuesday evening, but investigations continued.

Luke, of Bradley Stoke, Mr White, of Portishead, Mr Vickery, of Clevedon and Mr James, of Bath, were killed by the explosion in a biofuels storage silo.

More than £143,000 has been donated to a crowdfunding page set up by Wessex Water to support the families of the four workers.

A separate fundraiser started by Stoke Lane Football Club, where Luke played for the under-18s, has raised more than £15,000 towards funeral costs.

It is understood Mr James was a contractor working at the site, while Mr Vickery and Mr White were employees of Wessex Water, which owns the plant, and Luke was an apprentice at the firm.

As a club we are totally overwhelmed by the generosity of the entire community in trying to make things that little bit easier for the families and friends of Luke, Michael, Brian and Raymond. We want to give you all a huge heart felt thank you, but also to remind there is still time to donate. Thank you so much again!!!!

10/12/2020

Two mothers, whose daughters were murdered by ex-boyfriends, have joined forces to try to change the law over prison sentences.

Poppy Devey Waterhouse, 24, and Ellie Gould, 17, were both stabbed to death and their mothers want jail terms to be extended for killers who use weapons that are already at the crime scene.

Ellie was murdered at her home in Calne, Wiltshire, in May last year, after she ended her relationship with Thomas Griffiths, who was 17 at the time. He was sentenced to 12-and-a-half years after he admitted murder, after stabbing her 13 times in the neck. The Attorney General later ruled that his sentence was not unduly lenient.

Poppy, originally from Frome, Somerset, was murdered by her former boyfriend, Joe Atkinson, 25, at a flat in Leeds in December 2018. She had suffered about 70 knife injuries all over her body. Atkinson was sentanced to a minimum of 15 years and 310 days.

Both murders involved kitchen knives which were already at their homes. Guidelines state that if a weapon is taken to the murder scene, the starting point for a sentence is 25 years, but for other offences it is 15 years.

Poppy's mother, Julie Devey, from Frome, said it was "absolutely disgusting. If you're killed in the home you're not worth the same as people that are murdered outside the home, even though they are usually very violent murders. How is her murderer less violent or less dangerous, than somebody who is stabbed in the park by someone they don't know?"

Ellie's mother, Carole Gould, said: "These cases are happening all the time, and yet the government is simply not interested in changing sentencing so the punishment fits the crime."

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Justice said: "All murder rightly carries a life sentence and it is for judges to decide the minimum prison term. Factors, such as the degree of planning and pre-meditation that went into a murder, must be taken into account, and these apply no-matter where the murder was committed."
