Are you ready for a Next Chapter?

Do you have that ni**le or (even a shout) that you know you really want to do something else in life - that there is just a little more you have to offer or a dream you daren’t tell anyone?

Well I think you may enjoy my Next Chapter podcast. We go through every chapter of the lives of my brilliant guests to discover how they made their dreams come true.

And don’t think you are alone. I started this podcast because I am navigating my own Next Chapter from TV journalist to women’s fiction author. I’ve been through years and years of rejections and failures but the stories of authors I admire have always kept me going - when you hear they face the same struggles too.

I love podcasts but so many are about the success when it’s all done. I thought it would help if I share my hurdles in real time as we go along so you know we are very much in it together - side by side in this Next Chapter world.

I’ve also been researching mental health for the last 20 years and all the evidence shows how important this is too.

Hello there!

Just in case we haven’t met yet - I’m Ellie Barker.

I write uplifting women’s fiction and my Next Chapter novels are all stories of love, hope and the power of being you.

I am also a regional television news reporter and presenter too. It’s so easy to think the news is always bad but the love, hope and strength of community is always there too. I see it in real life every day I go to work which is why they are big themes in all my novels.

I also include a therapist in all my books- based on decades of my own personal research into mental health.

There’s also lots of behind the scenes of television and journalism life ( but none of the baddies are based on my real life colleagues … I promise.)

All my books are based in Bristol where I live - in either the fictitious Cherry Blossom Park and Strawberry Village because I love our wonderful city so much.

I hope my stories will lift you, entertain you and help you if you are pondering a next chapter too.

We hope they help you know you’re never alone and there’s always another way. You’ve got me and Cookie now - and we are so happy you are here.

It’s easy to think somebody like Roger never felt scared but the opposite is true. He just took the steps anyway.

He believes sometimes going where the fear is, is how we know where to go.

Look who I have to round up this series of The Next Chapter - the brilliant and wowser- he knows a thing or two about Next Chapters.

When Roger Saul hitchhiked to Portobello Market to trade Victorian jackets he had no idea this would be the start of Mulberry ( you know the one - that global brand)

But this is also a story of resilience, feeling fear, the power of being surrounded by people who truly love you and having the courage to start again when life throws you something you could never have imagined. Today he has created his own walnut farm and is also helping the way we all eat too.

Roger believes we are all different but by asking ourselves truthfully and taking that first step into the place we fear - it can take us further than we can ever imagine.

I was also lucky enough to interview Roger’s lovely wife back in series 13.

I have learned so much from both of these conversations. I hope you do too.

Holy macaroni!

So today - nearly 5 years after I put it out in the world my first novel The Pink Coffee Shop has made it to the top 1,000 in the whole of the Kindle Store. It’s hanging out next to and is having a wonderful time.

It had 3 million rejections ( maybe not quite 3 million but it felt like it)… two cover changes and spent a long time feeling a little sorry for itself as it hung out on its own.

But all thanks to my gorgeous supportive family, friends, Next Chapter Lovelies on my mailing list and now the power of the incredible and just brilliant it’s having it’s very own Next Chapter.

Together my books and I are learning that while there are no guarantees when it comes to Next Chapters, the possibilities are endless and that, for us is the magic.

All my novels and podcasts are created in the hope they will help you find your magic too.
