This week's theme is LANGUAGE.

Language has been very important throughout the development of Chess-à-tête, particularly when using chess terminology.

All of our combat cards are named after chess moves, and the pieces required to use each combat card are also influenced by the moves themselves.

As we are currently re-theming the game to have a more medieval feel, we considered renaming the combat cards to fit the theme too. However, after some thought and feedback, we decided that keeping these names was a good way to stick with our core theme: Chess! We find that many chess players enjoy this little nod to the game, so having these elements of chess language was a great way to keep that core chess theme strong.

This weeks theme for is graphic design!

So we thought it would be good to talk about the development of our pawn cards, which have been through lots of iterations, many of which have been forever lost to the pasteboard!

Our final or 'current' pawn card design seems to work well for us now. it's simple, highlights key info and sits well in our branding. It may not win any awards for design, but it does what we need it to. There have been tendencies to jazz it up a bit more, but this just lead to the card looking busy, stripping it back highlighted the illustration and information more clearly.

It may go through more changes yet, but I think graphic designers will always tweak, fix, and tinker all the way up to the dreaded send-to-print date! And even then... there's always reprints to look forward to 😅

♟️Here is our new pawn card design showcasing some of our exciting updates!♟️

Along with a new illustration for the all new 'Archer' pawn, we have also simplified the design of the pawn cards on the whole, and also added in a new 2-Pawn ability bonus.

This means that if you have 2 'Archers' in your army, or any other pair of matching pawns, e.g Defender, Support, Medic etc. Then this unlocks a second ability for both of those pawns!

MISTAKES is this weeks topic for and a recent mistake we made has come just in time...

We printed 500 copies of a flyer to hand out at game cafes, expos etc ahead of our kickstarter launch.
Can you spot the typo on the flyer? There is also an incorrect spelling or two for bonus points! 🌟

Just a gentle reminder to always proof your work, and get a second proof if you can on all materials, not just the game.

So, we have had to reprint and take the loss. But to be honest it was a good excuse to reprint, as the black box didnt really stand out on the back background as well as it did on screen, another thing to be mindful of is that print will always look different!
