Our third launch episode of Leading Lights features Dr Sarah Hughes, the inspirational CEO at Mind, the mental health charity.

Sarah has worked in mental health and social justice for 35 years. She has held a number of chief executive roles in the voluntary sector including for the prestigious think tank The Centre for Mental Health.

She holds a professional doctorate on the topic of women and leadership and was given an honorary doctorate by Hull University where she happily studied social work in the mid 90s.

Sarah's vision of becoming the CEO of Mind was established at the age of 18 when she ‘found her people’ during a gap year job at Mind Haringey. She was strongly influenced by her father’s leadership style and her mother’s resilience. She has a clear idea of what it means to be a feminist leader, which she applies to her role daily.

During the conversation Sarah reveals what it takes to lead in really complex environments, which she learned in her role managing mental health services at HM Prison Holloway, along with her understanding of the importance of combining theory and practice.

Sarah also speaks to what it’s like to challenge the perceptions of how a CEO ‘should’ look, speak and carry themselves and her thoughts on the 'strong headwinds' facing the charity sector. She shares how finding levity at difficult moments, her 'CEO squad', and spending time with her family are her coping strategies.

This is a 'must listen' for anyone in the charity sector, or an aspiring leader. We learned so much from Sarah.

Huge thanks to her for sharing her time so generously.

Our first episode of Leading Lights features the incredible Chief Executive of Together Co, April Baker.

Together Co is a loneliness charity that delivers life-changing services in Brighton and Hove through befriending, social prescribing and other volunteering programmes, it supports over 2,000 people a year. This is only made possible by more than 450 volunteers.

It also campaigns nationally and internationally to raise the awareness and impact of loneliness on our health and communities, and the importance of social health.

With over 10 years of senior leadership and board experience in the 'for purpose, not profit', sector, April is passionate about finding innovative and empowering solutions to societal issues, particularly loneliness and social isolation.

In this episode she shares her earliest memories of going out on her bicycle as a young child and why they could have been the spark for the inspiring work she does now at Together Co.

She also explains how she’s committed to bringing ‘social health’ up the agenda in the UK, and why; her biggest influences; how 'habit stacking' works for her; what it’s really like to be in a leadership role in a charity; her ‘why’ and how it keeps her going; and how she protects her reading time and her resilience.

There's so much to dig into!

- a case study of one of our favourite projects...

THE CLIENT:

THE CAMPAIGN: Why?

THE BRIEF:

1 in 4 parents will lose a baby during pregnancy and birth and 60,000 babies are born too soon every year in the UK.

Tommy’s is the largest charity in the UK carrying out research into the causes of miscarriage, stillbirth and premature birth.

Determined to drive awareness in this space, Tommy’s planned a public-facing campaign requiring a number of short films and animations that make it clear that pregnancy complications are physical conditions that can be researched and treated like every other physical condition.

DELIVERABLES:

🎥 x1 campaign hero film

🎥 x4 explainer animations

🎥 x1 vox pop launch event film

🎥 x3 research focussed films

🎥 x10 social ads

🎥Campaign photography

OUR APPROACH:

We pitched a series of beautifully filmed vignettes, which we would weave into a story of increasingly far fetched ‘reasons’ for child loss. During the following weeks we worked closely with contributors to ensure we made an honest film that truly reflected their lived experiences. This meant that focus groups were run sensitively and supportively, so that we came up with a list of authentic WHYs. We invited people from the focus group to feature in the film.

We chose a large Airbnb house for our contributors to stay, so they could support one another throughout the filming experience. The hero campaign film needed to be underpinned by several more information-based animation assets. These were connected conceptually and visually.

We also created optimised executions of the creative for distribution across multiple digital channels, including Facebook, Instagram and the Google Display Network.

THE IMPACT:

👊 13 million reach

👊 396,000 hero film views

👊 45,000 research animation views

👊 44,000 database sign-ups

Here are some of our favourite shots from the campaign photography.

Party FOMO warning!

Last week we hosted our 10th birthday party at beautiful Soho House here in Brighton. It was the perfect way to mark our journey from 0-10. Our wonderful clients, collaborators and friends brought their party A-game, and their best dance moves.

Huge thanks to our band, Starling, featuring producer Angeline Elliott, for an incredible live set, and to our in-house DJ Dan Mellor.

Here are some highlights!

25/10/2024

Would it even be our 10th birthday if we didn’t create a film about our journey so far?!

There are a few sore heads around here today. Last night a dazzling array of our clients and collaborators joined us at Soho House here in Brighton to celebrate a decade of MOREVER in style.

It was wonderful 🩷🩷

One of the highlights of the evening was being able to watch this birthday film with an audience. Our in-house creative team (especially Kazz Thompson) worked their magic and packed 10 years of highlights into just a few, action-packed, minutes.

Have a watch…

Better as a cat?

This month our in-house editor, Kazz Thompson was lucky enough to go to a talk by Nick Park, (director at Aardman, and creator of Wallace and Gromit and Creature Comforts) and Merlin Crossingham (started as an animator on Chicken Run, now creative director of Wallace and Gromit).

She picked up a raft of animation inspiration:

🐔 Did you know that Gromit was originally intended to be a cat? For us, he just wouldn’t be the same in feline form.

🐔 The Aardman mantra is ‘less is more’. This resonates with us. Our experience is that taking something away often makes what’s left behind more powerful.

🐔 Silence is golden. Many of Aardman's most popular characters like Shaun the Sheep, Feathers McGraw, and of course, Gromit himself, are non-speaking. They say so much with just facial expressions and a “very hardworking brow”. Their scenes often rely on music inspired by easily recognisable film references to convey emotions.

🐔 Most of their ideas start with a single sketch. Nick Park drew a chicken digging its way out of a chicken coop, that was the start of Chicken Run.

🐔 They don’t rush the process. Feature films have a 4 year production timeline. Only around 12-15 months of that is filming and editing. The first 2.5 - 3 years is on the story, scripting, storyboarding process. They effectively make the film 2 or 3 times.

If you’re interested in learning more about Aardman, Kazz recommends the documentary ‘A Grand Night In: The Story of Aardman’. It’s available on Youtube.

As a team we get a huge amount of inspiration from listening to podcasts. As part of our 10th birthday celebration, we’ve compiled our Top 10 favourite podcasts.

These are the ones that most inspire us when it comes to storytelling. But, what’s missing?

🎧 Which podcasts do you enjoy that you think we’d love too?

1. Empire Film Podcast - movie news and (self-styled) nonsense. Light hearted but informative.

2. Ear Hustle - made inside and out of San Quentin prison by inmates and former inmates. Great stories well told, a mixture of light hearted and more serious.

3. Criminal - storytellers share their experiences of unusual crimes from murder, robbery and fraud to a dog that pushed kids into a river because he would get rewarded whenever he rescued someone.

4. How To Fail by Elizabeth Day - celebrities talk about their top three failures and what they learned from them

5. The Rest Is Entertainment - pulls back the curtain on television, movies, journalism and more with Richard Osman and Marina Hyde.

6. Beautiful Misfits with Mary Portas - how businesses can make the world a better place when they don’t accept the status quo.

7. Cautionary Tales with Tim Harford - true stories of awful human error, tragic catastrophes, and hilarious fiascos.

8. The Diary of a CEO with Steven Bartlett - it seems unlikely that anyone could not have already heard of this one, but just in case: it’s an unfiltered journey into the remarkable stories of the people that have defined culture, achieved greatness and created stories.

9. How Stories Happen with Jay Acunzo - quite new, it’s a show for business storytellers focused on standing out and resonating deeper through substance and stories.

10. My life with Dementia - the podcast. Presented by actor and Dementia UK Celebrity Ambassador Jim Broadbent, this features real people (including Aqib, Shahbanu, Ricky and Andy, who have appeared in the films we made for the charity) sharing their experiences of living with, caring for, or losing someone to dementia.

How exciting! We're on the cover of the Sussex Business Times this month!

We are fiercely proud of our Sussex heritage and place in the Brighton business scene, and this is a fantastic way to mark our 10th birthday.

Our MD Abi Mellor and Creative Director Dan Mellor enjoyed having an opportunity to delve into the journey so far, and pick out the milestones along the way.

🎺 🎺 New Work 🎺 🎺

It was an honour to create this film for The King's Foundation’s Building a Legacy network.

The objective of Building a Legacy is to create communities for a more sustainable world by promoting an alternative to the traditional way of building housing estates.

With this film we wanted to show that ‘legacy development’ is very achievable - it works for people and places, both now and into the future.

The film advocates for the unique approach taken by The King’s Foundation. The charity works with landowners to create developments that champion sustainability, benefit existing communities, and create new projects which are more environmentally, creatively, socially and economically progressive than those in more traditional housing developments.

To create the film, our crew more or less ‘moved in’ to two of the developments: Poundbury in Dorset and Tournagrain near Inverness, for several days, so that they could embed themselves in the community. We wanted to show what it’s genuinely like to live there, so they recorded over 30 local people sharing their thoughts and captured many hours of footage of the locally distinctive architecture and community enhancing spaces.

In the final edit, we included a rich mix of talking head testimonial, expert opinion, vox pops and cinematic b-roll footage which we captured using a drone.

To quote Ben Bolgar, Executive Director, at The King’s Foundation:

“The legacy landowner movement could restore that balance with nature to make beautiful places that future generations will be proud of.”

This is the social cut of the film, you can see the full length version on our website.

Baby Loss Awareness Week (9–15 October 2024) is an important opportunity to break the silence around pregnancy and baby loss so that families get the support that they need.

Our work for Tommy's , the pregnancy and baby charity, highlights some of the misconceptions around the loss of a baby. We think it's important this week to share the film again in the hope that these myths can be eradicated.

We would also like to express our heartfelt support for anyone who has experienced the loss of a baby.
