Dr Ben Burville is passionate about the Farne Islands, and the wildlife that calls this special place home.

Puffins, Kittiwakes, Razorbills and other threatened seabirds have been thrown a lifeline, after decades of campaigning have finally succeeded in stopping industrial sand eel fishing in the English North Sea and in all Scottish waters. Sand eels are critical food source for seals as well.

In 2019 Jeff noticed his garden was being eaten by something with a huge appetite. Determined to find out who was stealing his vegetables, Jeff staked out the veggie patch with surveillance cameras and finally caught the culprit, a groundhog that he aptly named Chunk.

Originally planning to secure the area and call in the exterminators, Jeff found it hard to hold a grudge. He was so charmed by the little groundhog inhabiting his garden that he planted a new vegetable patch just for new friend.

A lone ranger, Digit appears not to socialise with other squirrels, making it extra special when Dani catches a glimpse of her most elusive furry friend.

Dani is a British Wildlife Photographer, who has made friends with a group of red squirrels living in a forest in Northern Sweden. The friendship bond is so strong that Dani has bought a house in the Swedish forest to live there part of the year.

When Hurricane Katrina hit the southern coast of the United States in August 2005, it brought winds of up to 175mph strong, and devastating floods. As water levels rose, George Mitchell, 80, was left clinging to a floating mattress with his pet dog, Frisky.

Hours of treading water took their toll on George. Exhausted and soaked, he was drifting into semi-consciousness and ready to give up. But Frisky thought differently; every time George faltered, the dog was there with a nudge and a lick, bringing him back from the brink of death.

How a pet pig summoned medical attention for a dying woman.
Heart patient Jo Ann Altsman was alone when she collapsed while holidaying in Pennsylvania. Alone, that is, except for Lulu, her pet pot-bellied pig.

Wracked by chest pain and with no people in earshot, Jo Ann feared a new heart attack would be her last. But Lulu knew that the door flap led to a path, the path led to the road and the road led to traffic and people. So for 45 minutes, the animal trotted between the Jo Ann and the road.

When at last a man pulled over to investigate, Lulu led him straight to Jo Ann.

The Elephant That Rescued The Girl

Re-living how an eight-year-old girl survived a freak tidal wave thanks to an elephant called, Ning Nong.

Amber Owen was enjoying the holiday of a lifetime in Thailand when the Boxing Day 2004 tsunami struck, killing nearly a quarter-million people.

The little girl could easily have been among the dead or injured. Unaware of the deadly events unfolding deep in the Indian Ocean, she was enjoying a ride on her new best friend: Ning Nong, the elephant. But, unusually, Ning Nong was unsettled, and when the sea ebbed out suddenly, ran from the beach, still carrying Amber and forcing its handler in the same direction.

Minutes later, from safe higher ground, all watched in horror as a vast wave from a sub-sea earthquake inundated the coast. The tsunami’s death and injuries toll shocked the world, but Amber lived – all thanks, say her family, to the instincts and quick reaction of her elephant friend.

‘As a mother... her instinct kicked in’ 🐙 Sheree Marris found a plastic pipe washed up on the sand. To her surprise, an octopus was inside, and had laid eggs. She watched as the Octopus mother tried to push the pipe back into the water, desperately trying to save her eggs from drying out. ☀️ Sheree knew she had to help. She fashioned a weight for the pipe out of an old brick and some rope and took the creature and her home out into deeper water.
