They break up the chitchat with 7” records on the turntable and end with a very special stripped back live session

The Slack team were up in Manchester again this weekend and we had such a great time connecting with our Slack City MCR correspondents, John Robb and Jay Taylor, who alongside Brighton promoter Anna Moulson of Melting Vinyl and AIP were involved in the Un-Convention panel discussions. We were treated to a live performance by Immersion (Colin and Malka - Swimming in Sound) at SOUP to finish of a fantastic few days. A pleasure to meet everyone at the conference and the show, and were very much looking forward to more trips to the city. This week we have two brilliant shows coming in hot from Nick Roseblade.
First up tonight’s monthly edition of Cascade Thunders Mixtape, a mixtape genuinely mixed onto tape via a c90 cassette, painstakingly put together and then streamed live on radio for your warm and hissy listening pleasure!

On Friday Nick returns with his Keep Slack Album Club from 8-10PM this time featuring a very special guest who will be talking about how he came to work closely with 21st century popstar and then moving on to his own work and brand new album No Sound In Space which is due for release that day, on Friday 15th November!

“Since 2011, Blake has been most known for being the guitarist and a music director for Lana Del Rey, notching up three songwriting credits on her acclaimed ‘Ultraviolence’ full length. He sees his solo work as a form of escapism, a place where he can experiment and find comfort and catharsis outside of expectations and formal structure. The album was written instinctively, and Blake made sure he didn’t force anything, letting go and getting out of his own way, listening intently as sounds and textures materialized organically. “I didn’t want to ruin it by being a perfectionist,” he laughs. And his collaboration with Kenyan sound artist KMRU, who runs the OFNOT label and contributes to two of the tracks on the album, occurred similarly organically.”

Tonight we are live from for another evening of Radio Blah Blah featuring two brilliant Brighton based acts with powerful voices and stories grace the stage! They are and who both have slightly extended sets than usual due to our third act unfortunately now unable to perform. Tickets are still available online and on the door, come along, it’s all seated and we’ll be wrapped up by 9PM and heading down to the bar for another drink. No pressure to dress up.. your host has said he’s not much of a Halloween person so we doubt he will be 🎃 but if you’re in the spirit we’d love to see some freaky costumes 👻

We have the legendary Mancunian musician turned writer treating us to a brand new monthly show which is now available to listen back to at the link in our bio. ‘Old New Borrowed and Blue debuted on Thursday 10th October and every four weeks from then John will be back with us for an hour brimming with, well, a few tales and excellent music new and old!

Did you know now have a monthly show on Slack City? Founding partner Alex Knight has been there since the early days of the shop based in Covent Garden, and then Crawley, where the idea of starting a label was spurred. Cementing themselves as one of the finest and most eclectic independent labels in the UK, now situated right here in Brighton and known for releasing music for a range of worldwide artists with sounds from electronica to noise rock and contemporary classical to post punk.. we are proud to welcome them to our community and give them space on our airwaves to share their finds. These Blues w/ Mark Peters

I’ve been listening to a lot of blues lately for the first time since I started playing guitar when I was 15. My guitar teacher gave me a c90 cassette with Elmore James on one side and Skip James on the other side.

These days we’re quite saturated with the corporate / white side of the genre that often lacks much of the atmosphere and genuine soul of the original artists.

When I noticed that it was black history month it occurred to me that Blues is the most important of all black musical history, as popular music simply wouldn’t exist without it. 

I wonder if people think Blues is a bit predictable and overlook it, as the chords don't change much from track to track...

What varies though, is feel and tone, and the different shades of emotion therein. These elemental templates were aped first in rock and roll, then in pop music via a cyclical process which has lasted for the best part of 100 years.
