Pier Productions, an independent TV and radio company based in Brighton, are looking for an LGBTQ+ person to contribute to a short film, to be supplied to BBC One's The One Show.
During the late 1980s, a removals company named “Lesbus” was established by a le***an couple in London, later being renamed Shirley’s Removals, after its founder Shirley McGah. The business was founded during a time when many people living with HIV weren’t able to get hired help when moving home, because of the stigma associated with HIV and AIDS. Shirley started a removals business to support the community and partnered with the Terrence Higgins Trust, to become one of London’s first LGBTQ+ removals companies.
The short film being produced will explore the untold history of Shirley's Removals. It will also reunite Shirley with someone she helped move during that time. If you remember being moved by Shirley in the late 1980s and would like to share your story on The One Show, explaining the significance that Shirley's Removals had on your life at the time, please contact Nina at Pier Productions, on 01273 691 401 or e-mail [email protected] .
