Love this Saturday morning shout-out by Polly's Field Village, Windmill Bistro. Thank you so much! It’s been a pleasure working with you all on your new Facebook campaign.

The eleventh tip, if you are planning to re-vision your website, is about social proof and what is helpful to include.

TIP 11: Include social proof.

According to Statista, ‘Approximately nine in ten UK consumers stated they would check online reviews before buying from a particular business.’

Read that again.

Helga Dosa, Founder of Brand Rated, said: “58% of consumers would pay more to support a company with good reviews.”

Read this quote again, as well.

So, what is social proof and how can we provide this for our potential customers?

HubSpot explain it well. ‘Social proof is the idea that consumers will adapt their behavior according to what other people are doing.’

If you have them, include quotes from satisfied customers. Even better, include reviews with four star ratings if you have them.

The higher the rating the better.

Social proof can be presented as automatically scrolling carousels with headshots of your customers.

Online reviews can also be pulled into your website using widgets that connect to platforms such as Google Reviews or Trustpilot.

Including customer success stories and case studies can also work well.

Whatever you choose to include, keep your customers in mind.

Everything in your business and website needs to be guided by their needs and wants.

This morning, I changed mine and I feel a lot lighter.

The tenth tip, if you are planning to re-vision your website, is about taking your visitors on a journey and building emotional connections.

TIP 10: Tell your story.

Take your website visitors, and potential customers, on a journey back in time to where it all began.

How did you come to be where you are today?

What and who has shaped and influenced you?

What were your turning points as business or charity?

Who are some of your role models, heroes and heroines?

Who has helped you to get to where you are today, and how did they help?

Include genuine and interesting insights about you (and your team if you have one) in the About section of your website.

Open the virtual door to your business, and enjoy this opportunity to show people around.

Tell your visitors about any charities or causes that you support or donate time or resources to.

Walking to raise money for charity? Include photos and a brief write up.

Donating your time to help others? Take a selfie with the person or people you help and tell us where you are and how long you’ve been helping.

Telling your story can be surprisingly powerful, and enrolling.

Once it’s out there, you may be surprised who starts to turn up, and wants to work with you or purchase what you have to offer.

A great example is the brand story I created for Grant Phillips at GPC Group who supports girls and women in sport through his business.

Check out the About section in his website:

The ninth tip, if you are planning to re-vision your website, is about how to overcome writer’s block.

TIP 9: Write away.

Prompted by your site map, choose a section to write or to rewrite.

The important thing is to begin writing, and to capture ideas as and when they come to you. And, before you forget!

Do all of your writing offline, and ideally type your content into a word processor.

I like using Notes on my iPhone to capture ideas and then bring them into Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace.

Once your content is typed up, you can then easily copy and paste it into your website editor.

Aim for short paragraphs.

Three to four sentences is a good rule of thumb.

Write with your target customers in mind. What do they want and what do they need? How can you help?

SAVE YOUR NEW TEXT REGULARLY.

It’s painful if, or when, you lose work!

Give yourself and the content you are working on time to fall into place.

Draft, re-draft and re-draft again, until everything reads well and flows.

See TIP 6: Slow down.

Make a cup of tea. Go outdoors. Listen to the sounds of nature.

The right words come, when you give them space and time.

Next week, I will be sharing five more helpful tips to remember when crafting website content.

23/05/2024

The eighth tip, if you are planning to re-vision your website, is about how to encourage people to read on.

TIP 8: Craft your headlines.

The role of headlines is to attract attention and to engage your visitors.

Writing your headlines first, for each page and subsections within each page, can give your content structure, focus and a logical flow.

Use headlines with hooks to let your visitors know they've come to the right place, and also that you understand their unique needs and wants.

Once this has been established they are more likely to read on, make a purchase, sign up for something, or book an appointment.

Remember to include keywords in your headings, and turn your headings into questions.

A good example of this is the headline I have created for Adam Heighway at The Diary of a Debt Collector®.

Adam is the CEO of a ground-breaking ethical debt-collection company, that has already collected £3.3m for their clients this year, by opening up conversations with their client's debtors.

Their headline contains keywords, a hook and a call to action.

It will be used on their holding page, while we are working on their new website, and on their homepage when the site goes live next month.

'Are you considering debt recovery through the UK's court system? Talk with us first!’

Block out time to craft your headlines, and choose a place to work where you won't be disturbed.

Create a first draft and, once it’s done, walk away. Then, go back to your headlines later with fresh eyes.

In my experience, the best headline hooks are ones that have been researched, drafted, re-drafted and crafted.

Stick the kettle on, make yourself comfortable and get creative.

Over the next two weeks, I will be sharing more helpful tips to remember when re-writing website content.

The seventh tip, if you are planning to re-vision your website, is essential if you are serious about creating effective and engaging content.

TIP 7: Slow down.

You’ll see more.

Give yourself, and your new content, time to evolve.

The best way to do this is to set up a holding page, while working on your new content.

See TIP 5: Design a holding page.

Everything falls into place when we slow down.

When we are relaxed and open to exploring creative rabbit holes, ideas begin to flow.

Creative writing requires us to access the right side of the brain. It’s where intuitive flashes of insight and creative connections are made.

When we’re in a rush, or putting ourselves under pressure, it’s easy to go blank.

Slowing down, and blocking out time for the ideas to come, will help you to achieve more.

Over the next two weeks, I will be sharing more helpful tips to remember when re-writing website content.

One every day, from Monday to Friday.

20/05/2024

The sixth tip, if you are planning to re-vision your website, will help your website to be found when your customers are searching online.

TIP 6: Research keywords.

Keywords are what we enter when we're searching for products, services or anything else that takes our fancy while we're surfing the Internet.

Keywords can be short phrases (for general searches) or long and detailed questions (for more specific searches).

It all comes back to your customers. What do they need and what do they want?

Thinking about your customers, and website visitors, will give you an idea of the search terms they may be using when they go online.

See TIP 1: Start with your customers.

There are lots of great tools that will help you to research and select keywords relevant to your business or charity.

I use diib to research and select keywords for my clients.

It tells me which keywords my clients' competitors are using, and which keywords are easy or difficult to rank highly for in Google.

Another cool SEO tool, recommended to me by Jake and Raid at Click Genius, is Screaming Frog. It’s also worth looking into.

Once you've researched and chosen your keywords, add them into your content.

To support on-page SEO, add keywords to your headlines, your body copy and also to your meta page titles and meta page descriptions.

Over the next two weeks, I will be sharing more helpful tips to remember when re-writing website content.

The fifth tip, if you are planning to revision your website, is essential to have in place while your new content is being created.

TIP 5: Design a holding page.

Holding pages are what people see when they type in your website address, while your website is offline and being updated.

Think beyond, 'New website coming soon!'

Get creative.

As well as including your contact details, add hyperlinks to your social media pages.

Provide interesting documents to read, while your website is being updated.
Create and add downloadable PDFs.

These could be a digital version of your brochure, a step-by-step walk through of services or a special promotion that runs while your website is being updated.

Include a call to action.

For example, 'Sign up for our monthly newsletter' or 'Click here for details of a very special offer - Available while our new website is being redesigned.'

With a well designed holding page in place, you'll be able to relax and enjoy the process of revisioning your website without worrying about losing potential customers.

Over the next two weeks, I will be sharing more tips for revamping your website.

The fourth tip, if you are planning to revamp your website, can make a big difference.

Once in place, you can then stand back and check the lines of travel are as you need them to be.

TIP 4: Create a site map.

Grab yourself a pen and paper, or use an app like Creately, and map out the lines of travel through your site.

Remember tree diagrams at school? That’s what site maps look like.

Begin with your homepage at the top, and then add branches down from there for each page that links to your homepage.

And each page or subpage that links to those pages.

The end point for each line of travel will be to make a purchase, complete an enquiry form, sign up for something or book a call.

Create your site map with customer personas in mind (there may be more than one).

Each persona may need and want to take a different route through your website.

Remember to also include call to action buttons within the site map. They act as the directional signposts for your visitors.

Over the next three weeks, I will be sharing more tips for revamping your website.
