Join Steve this week as he leaves the small village of Scourie that he stayed at last night and continues his road trip anti-clockwise around Scotlands North Coast 500.

He continues to struggle to find working chargers to charge our electric campervan using the antiquated electric car charging facilities run by Charge Place Scotland.

After taking a turn on the route that hasn’t been gritted and after loosing grip on the slippery road surface Steve decides to turn around and head back the other way but that proves to be tricky.

On his way back to Inverness Steve comes across a couple that’s rental car is stuck in the snow on the side of the road, so Steve goes into full on rescue mode to try help to get them out.

Join Steve this week as he finally makes it to Inverness to begin his tour around Scotland’s North Coast 500 in our electric ID Buzz, and to top it off, it snowed last night and everything looks so beautiful covered in snow.

He starts his journey anticlockwise and his first stop to top up the electric in Inverness goes fine, he heads up the east coast and makes it to John o’ Groats where he cooks up a lunch fit for a king.

After stopping in Thurso for the night before heading across the very top of Scotland, things take a turn for the worst as he encounters 3 car charging stations on the that simply won’t work.

How is Steve keeping warm sleeping in the van without heating in sub zero conditions? Can he make it around the NC500 or will the electric charging infrastructure let him down?

Wow, what a milestone to wake up to this morning…

This week Steve embarks on an epic solo adventure to Scotland. His challenge is to drive the North Coast 500 in our fully electric ID Buzz Campervan. Will the doubters be right? What is the true range in a freezing Scottish winter? What is the true state of the UK charging infrastructure, are we really ready for a fully electric world?

Although our electric camper is well insulated, we didn’t install any additional heating in The Buzz when building it, so see how Steve copes with keeping warm whilst sleeping inside as temperatures drop to below freezing.

He discovers a fantastic pub stop for his first night, but things so take a change on the second day as roads are closed, diversions around country roads take many more hours putting a strain on the vehicles battery and just as he needs to charge the van he comes across electric car charging stations that simply won’t work!

Join me this week on my Steve Radford channel as I head to Kent to give our ID Buzz a bit of a shakedown before taking it on a huge road trip to the Highlands of Scotland and around the North Coast 500. As our electric campervan doesn’t have any additional heating installed, I try out several different methods to keep warm whilst winter camping. And while I’m down in Kent I pop into Caravan Beds to collect the new custom cushions they made for it.

A few photos from my last leg of the NC500 yesterday. Unfortunately the Applecross road was closed so I couldn’t quite do that, but the whole journey all around the Highlands of Scotland was spectacular, especially covered in snow. I also managed to help rescue some Chinese tourists trapped in the snow yesterday too, which again I caught on camera, so look out for that in the videos. This NC500 series will start next Sunday December 1st and last for 4 weeks until Sunday December 22nd. I also have a pre NC500 video where I went away in The Buzz to do a shakedown before I left and that will be on my Steve Radford YouTube channel this coming Wednesday. Thanks for all your kind words of support for this trip guys, and to all the Karen’s and keyboard warriors that have commented on the posts saying how irresponsible I have been for doing this trip, I think I’ve managed to block you all now, but if I haven’t, simply leave a stupid comment below and I’ll get around to blocking you shortly 😉

This week we are heading out on an impromptu road trip to Wales. Join us for pub stops, autumn walks, welsh treats and family time. There is even a failed attempt to stay to stop at a random pin Steve once dropped on Google Maps, we still have no idea why he dropped that pin!

Good morning from Gairloch on the beautiful west coast of the NC500. Yesterday wasn’t without its challenges, and at one stage I got stuck in the snow and couldn’t continue the route so had to try and turn around on a single track road. Fortunately I managed to do it without getting myself stuck in a ditch, but even more so I got it all on camera so that should by fun to watch when I get around to editing it. I remember the west coast being the most beautiful part of the NC500, but it’s looking even more stunning all covered in snow this time around. Today I will continue to Applecross and attempt to go over the Bealach na Ba and back to Inverness before the storms come in this afternoon.

A few photos from my drive across the top of Scotland in The Buzz today. I’d forgotten how often I stop to get out and take photos so it took a little longer than anticipated. I’m now parked up at a campsite in Scourie where I’m in The Bar in the Spar having a few beers with the locals and looking forward to enjoying the drive down the west coast of the NC500 tomorrow.

What a great day retracing our steps around the NC500 from when we did it as a family at Christmas in 2016. I stopped and cooked up a lovely salmon for lunch at John o’ Groats whist charging The Buzz, so that was a good use of time. When visiting Dunnet Head I bumped into a lovely Welsh couple from Port Talbot who happen watch our videos. I’m now parked up in Thurso for the night and will continue my trip across the top to Durness tomorrow. Thanks for all the lovely comments and messages of concern and support. I’m doing just fine, there are plenty of places to charge the car, and don’t worry, I’m keeping nice and warm inside at night. Many have asked if I’m videoing this trip. Of course I am, but I am taking the time to enjoy the road trip and will begin editing the footage when I get back home, so you should have plenty of videos to see you through December to Christmas 😉

What a dreadful day of driving yesterday was due to the A9 being shut and having to endure all the traffic taking the thin country roads. I pretty much had Tesla charging network to myself for a couple of charges on the way up, including a stop off at Aviemore. Last night I made it to Inverness and I woke up this morning to a beautiful snow covered Scottish countryside. What a great way to start my NC500 trip. Next stop, John o’ Groats…

My pub stop for last night was The Metal Bridge Inn, Carlisle. Today I’m heading over the border onto Scotland and to Inverness where I’ll be spending the next week doing the NC500. The last time we did a loop across the top of Scotland was as a family at Christmas 2016. This week I’m doing it again on my own in The Buzz 😳

We fixed our dirty drinking water problem! Since the first time we filled up our fresh water tank we have not trusted the water that comes out of it. It only takes one bad drop of water to contaminate the whole system.
Join us this week as we head to Alde to have one final upgrade done. We now have an AquaClear inline water filter! And of course, whilst we were there, we couldn’t resist getting to know Alde better with a tour and a lovely chat with UK MD Leigh Marsden.
